The University of Pennsylvania Strength & Conditioning Program: A Holistic Approach to Athletic Excellence

The University of Pennsylvania Strength & Conditioning Department is dedicated to fostering the development of well-rounded student-athletes. The Strength & Conditioning program shares the Division of Recreation and Intercollegiate Athletics' (DRIA) vision of impacting lives through athletics. Its core mission is to empower all Penn student-athletes and teams to reach their peak potential, both mentally and physically. By doing so, the program strives to:

The Greene Family Intercollegiate Strength and Conditioning Center

A cornerstone of the program is the Greene Family Intercollegiate Strength and Conditioning Center. Opened in May 2010 and named in honor of former Penn football and lacrosse player James Greene Jr. W'72, PAR'05, PAR'08, PAR'10, this state-of-the-art facility provides an all-inclusive training environment.

The Greene Family Center features:

All users are expected to respect the facility and other users, ensuring a positive and productive training environment for everyone. Permission for guests to use the facility may be granted by the Director, provided that liability waivers are signed.

Internship Program

The University of Pennsylvania Strength & Conditioning Department is committed to the growth of aspiring strength and conditioning professionals. Individuals who wish to participate in Penn’s Strength & Conditioning Internship Program will have the opportunity to gain valuable knowledge for those who are in pursuit or serious about eventually pursuing strength and conditioning as a career. Through its internship program, the department aims to cultivate the next generation of strength and conditioning coaches. The program focuses on:

  • Professional networking

The internship is an unpaid position that offers Continuing Education Units through the National Strength and Conditioning Association. It requires a minimum commitment of one semester, with interns dedicating at least 15 hours per week to the program.

  • Serving as a secondary coach to full-time staff.
  • Assisting with both weight room and on-field sessions.
  • Setting up and breaking down training sessions.
  • Providing cueing and hands-on coaching.
  • Contributing to daily operations, including facility upkeep.

A key component of the internship is the development of coaching philosophy. Young coaches will learn how to deliver their message and exercise soft skills related to emotional intelligence, creating athlete buy-in, effective communication, and team collaboration.

Beyond the Weight Room: A University-Wide Commitment to Health and Wellness

The University of Pennsylvania's commitment to strength and conditioning extends beyond its intercollegiate athletic programs. Campus Recreation offers recreational activities and facilities to the entire Penn community. Campus Recreation offers fitness and wellness programs to meet the health and fitness goals of each member of the Penn community. Additional facilities include:

  • Fox Fitness Center: Located at Gate 2 within the Weiss Pavilion at Franklin Field, this center provides an additional 8,000 square feet of indoor recreational space. Access requires a valid PennCard or affiliate card.
  • Penn Park: This 24-acre space offers athletic fields and open space, including the Dunning-Cohen Champions Field, the James “Ace” Adams Field, and the Hamlin Tennis Center.
  • Penn Ice Rink: Serving the University and local communities for over 45 years, the Penn Ice Rink at the Class of 1923 Arena provides opportunities for ice-based activities.

While cardio activities are often the first to come to mind when starting an exercise routine, strength training plays a crucial role in overall health and well-being. As a Penn Medicine physical therapist and certified strength and conditioning specialist at Chester County Hospital explains, cardio alone overlooks an important part of your body and your health-your muscles. “You may have heard it called strength training, weight training, muscle-strengthening, or even resistance training,” said Brough.

“Many people are familiar with the health benefits of regular walking or engaging in any type of aerobic activity,” said Penn Medicine’s Benjamin Snell, MD, a family medicine physician with Lancaster General Health Physicians Family Medicine Twin Rose. “Conversations about the number of steps people log each day have become so common that the importance of cardio exercise has filtered into our collective subconscious.   • Mood Enhancement: A meta-analysis published in JAMA Psychiatry found that weight training benefitted mood, with improvements seen in people who were depressed before the study and a reduced likelihood of depression in those who were not.

University-Assisted Community School (UACS) Sports, Fitness & Health

Recognizing the importance of promoting health and wellness from a young age, the University of Pennsylvania engages in community outreach through the University-Assisted Community School (UACS) Sports, Fitness & Health program. This initiative connects K-12 West Philadelphia students and University partners in before-school, school-day, and after-school programs focused on health and wellness, physical activity, team sports, and leadership.

UACS Sports, Fitness and Health aims to cultivate and implement a sustainable and replicable model through programs like Young Quakers Community Athletics, the Penn West-Philadelphia Basketball League, Cross-Grade Sports, university-assisted physical education, university-assisted health and sexual health education, university-assisted recess, and SMART teams.

During the school day, UACS Sports, Fitness and Health brings Penn graduate and undergraduate students as well as Penn Medicine residents into elementary, middle, and high schools to teach general health and sexual health education. The SMART Teams program is designed to empower 6th-8th grade students by fostering teamwork, accountability, and goal-setting through weekly classroom sessions with Penn students and Netter staff. Each week, students are grouped into teams and tasked with setting individual goals that they will work towards with the support of their teammates. The program emphasizes team-based accountability, helping students stay on track and achieve their goals while learning the value of collaboration and personal responsibility.

Academic Opportunities in Sport Science

For individuals seeking a deeper understanding of the principles underlying strength and conditioning, the University of Pennsylvania offers a Master of Science degree in Sport Science. This program is designed to meet the needs of students with interest in sport, health, and fitness professions. Based upon their selected program of study students are prepared for a variety of competitive employment opportunities as clinicians, coaches, finess specialists, and administrators of sport and athletic programs. Students will be able to obtain employment in a variety of settings: including professional, college and amatteur athletics, allied health, corporate fitness, community health and recreation programs, hospital and medical-based exercise programs.

A Legacy of Athletic Excellence: The Penn Relays

The University of Pennsylvania also hosts the Penn Relay Carnival, the longest-running track & field meet in the country. First held on April 21, 1895, the event attracts more than 100,000 spectators and more than 15,000 entries each year. The event is held over three days concluding on the final Saturday of April.
