The University of North Texas (UNT) recognizes that costs should not be a barrier to opportunity and offers a variety of options to assist students in paying for their college education. Many students still need help paying for college, even though UNT makes every effort to keep costs low. With a little preparation and a few tips on how to get through the financial aid application process, financing your college education is within your reach. You might be surprised to find out how much financial aid you can receive, regardless of your family’s income level. You won’t know what you are eligible for unless you apply.

Understanding the UNT Transfer Excellence Scholarship

Transfer Excellence Scholarships are available to undergraduate students that have a demonstrated track record of academic success who are transferring to UNT for the first time from a community college or an accredited university. These scholarships do not have to be repaid.

These two-year awards range from $1,500 to $4,000 per year based on transfer cumulative GPA.

Eligibility Requirements for the Transfer Excellence Scholarship

To be eligible for a UNT Transfer Excellence Scholarship, a student must meet specific criteria:

  • Credit Hours: Have completed a minimum of 30 semester credit hours at a community college or an accredited university.
  • Full-Time Enrollment: Be a full-time student taking a minimum of 12 UNT semester credit hours each fall and spring term.

While academic merit is a primary consideration for scholarships, some scholarships also consider financial need. We encourage you to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) annually since some scholarships require the application.

Navigating the Scholarship Application Process

The first step in the scholarship process is to apply for admission to UNT. You must be admitted to UNT before we can process your financial aid.

The next step in the scholarship process is to create a profile in the Eagle Scholarship Portal by June 15. To create a profile in the Eagle Scholarship Portal, you will need to activate your EUID.

It's also advisable to apply to any department-sponsored scholarships for scholarship consideration. Each department on campus makes departmental scholarship award decisions. Department-sponsored scholarships are awarded to students with specific program involvement with the department.

Understanding Financial Aid and FAFSA

To maximize your chances of receiving financial aid, it is crucial to understand the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and its role in the process. Be sure to submit your FAFSA for the correct school year.

After you complete your FAFSA, you will receive a Student Aid Report (SAR). UNT receives your FAFSA data from the Federal Processor. You can view any Tasks To Do List in your myUNT portal account. Please respond to all requests in a timely manner.

Receiving and Accepting Your Award

Monitor EagleConnect and myUNT for award information. UNT sends out financial aid awards in late April/early May for the upcoming year.

Award notifications are typically sent out in June for the fall semester. You can accept your financial aid awards online through myUNT portal. Once you have received a scholarship, you must accept it to get the money.

Additional Costs to Consider

While scholarships and financial aid can significantly reduce the cost of college, it's important to be aware of additional expenses.

Orientation Fees: Financial aid does not pay for orientation fees, however, a fee deferment requires.
