University of Florida Transfer Application: A Comprehensive Guide

Transferring to the University of Florida (UF) is a goal for many students. UF offers many opportunities, and it's indeed competitive, particularly in terms of accepting transfer students. Understanding the UF Transfer Landscape

The University of Florida transfer acceptance rate is 47.7%. For entry in the fall of 2023, 5,579 students applied for transfer admission and 2,666 were successful. While still an extremely competitive process, this school extends offers to 2,000 to 3,000 qualified transfer applicants each year.

A sharp rise in selectivity at the University of Florida in the 2020s has made the goal of becoming a Gator more difficult to achieve than ever before. While the first-year acceptance rate has plummeted below 30% (and often below 25%) in recent years, the UF transfer acceptance rate has remained more inviting.

Key Requirements for Transfer Admission

To be considered for transfer admission to UF, applicants must satisfy specific academic criteria and complete the necessary application steps.

Academic Prerequisites

GPA Requirements: According to the university, the minimum GPA required for consideration is 2.0. However, transfer admission to UF is largely based on your academic performance. You need to maintain a high GPA at your current institution. UF generally suggests a minimum 2.5 GPA, but competitive applicants typically have much higher GPAs. To advance to the junior year, students must have a minimum 3.2 overall GPA, minimum 3.0 critical tracking GPA, with a “C” or better in all prerequisite courses, and be on track to complete 60 credit hours by the end of their sophomore year. Certain programs may recommend a higher minimum.
Coursework: Make sure you've taken the necessary prerequisite courses for the program you're interested in at UF. These courses must align closely with your UF program of interest as the university weighs this factor heavily when deciding admission. Have completed their major’s stated Course Requirements. Prospective transfers from Florida public colleges can refer to the Fla. Virtual Campus Common Prerequisite Manual for state university transfer prerequisite course requirements.

Credit Hour Requirements

Admissions requirements are based off the number of transferable college credits you will have earned prior to your intended first term in our program. Applicants who satisfy the following minimum requirements will be considered for admission at the junior level, if space is available. Applicants seeking admission to a program in teacher education must submit SAT or ACT scores to the Office of Admissions as soon as possible after submitting an application. Limited access programs may require additional test scores.

Junior or Senior Transfers with 60 or More Credits and no A.A.: A minimum of 60 semester credits (or 90 quarter hours) of acceptable college courses (i.e., 60 transferable semester credits from a regionally accredited institution, or an A.A. Transcripts verifying completion of the courses (or acceptable substitutes) required for admission by the college.
Freshman or Sophomore Transfers with fewer than 60 (13-59) credits: Due to space limitations, UF is not currently accepting lower-division transfer students. Prospective transfer applicants are encouraged to remain at or to transfer to a Florida college until the A.A.

Application Components

University of Florida Transfer Admissions Application: Transfer applicants must complete the University of Florida Transfer Admissions application. The application process is simple and straightforward. It will take about 30 minutes to complete your application. If you need to take a break for any reason, you can save it and return to complete the application later.
Transcripts: Submit a transcript from each institution attended, regardless of the length of attendance or credit earned. For the purpose of initial review, the Office of Admissions accepts unofficial transcripts. Applicants may upload unofficial transcripts within the academic background section of their application, or if not available at the time of application, through their application status page at a later date. Applicants who receive an offer of admission should arrange to have official transcripts sent to the UF Office of Admissions from each postsecondary institution attended. If you attended UF as your postsecondary institution, you do not have to order a transcript from the Office of the University Registrar. Official transcripts can be sent to UF in two ways: paper transcript received by UF in a sealed envelope or electronic transcripts sent from your institution directly to UF, which can save up to two weeks’ response time. UF accepts electronic transcripts through FASTER, Parchment, National Student Clearing House, ScribbleSoft, e-Scrip Safe, Credential Solutions, SCOIR or Transcripts Plus. All academic credentials become property of the university. They will not be returned to you or forwarded to a third party.
Essays: UF will also want to see that you have clear academic and career goals, as well as a strong interest in your chosen field. This can be explained in your application essay, where you should outline why you're interested in your chosen major, your career goals, and how transferring to UF can help you achieve those goals. What are the core skills and knowledge you hope to acquire by completing a degree in this major and how do you plan to apply these when you graduate? Please provide any other information about yourself that you feel will help this college make an admission decision. This may include work, research, volunteer activities or other experiences pertaining to the degree program.

Additional Considerations

Associate of Arts (A.A.) Degree: Applicants seeking to transfer directly to UF from a Florida public college after receiving an Associate of Arts degree. (All other transfer applicants and applicants for readmission should refer to Transfer Applicants without A.A. Prospective transfer students should also visit the FLVC A.A. The A.A. At least 60 semester credits of academic work exclusive of occupational courses(i.e., 60 transferable semester credits from a regionally accredited institution, or an A.A.
Foreign Language: It is preferable that students have two years of foreign language instruction or be able to document an equivalent level of proficiency.
Test Scores: Lower division transfer applicants who graduated high school less than 5 years ago will need to submit test scores to the university as part of the admissions process. Lower division transfer applicants must submit test scores from the SAT, ACT and/or CLT. UF has no test preference. We will superscore (take the highest scores for each subsection) to create the highest possible total score. In addition, lower division transfer applicants with 30 or more transferable college credits should have completed some of the prerequisite courses for their major of interest prior to their first intended term of enrollment in UF Online. The closer a student is to earning 60 credits, the more prerequisites are expected for admission as a lower division applicant.

Important Deadlines and Timing

The University of Florida offers a fall, spring, and summer transfer option. The University of Florida transfer deadline for fall applicants is May 1. Spring applicants apply by September 15. Summer applicants have a deadline of February 15. UF typically starts accepting transfer applications one year before the entry term. The sooner you can submit your application, the better, as this can make a difference in their admissions process. University of Florida transfer decisions are made by June 15 for those seeking to start in the fall. The spring notification date is November 15. Summer semester transfers will be notified by April 1.

Special Programs and Considerations

UF Online: UF Online offers a robust academic experience for those joining the Gator Nation online. UF Online welcomes applicants who have started their college education but have not completed their degree. As a student considering your options at the University of Florida, it is important to understand that the admissions process for UF Online and UF Main Campus are separate and distinct. With the exception of the Pathway to Campus Enrollment (PaCE) program, UF Online is not a pathway to becoming a UF Main Campus student. We’re committed to helping you achieve your academic goals. In addition to meeting the university requirements, upper division transfer applicants must meet the admissions requirements for their intended UF Online major. Each major has an overall GPA requirement, a list of prerequisite courses, and a minimum prerequisite GPA required for admissions purposes.
Dual Enrollment: Under the Florida Board of Governors Admission Regulation 6.005 if you are obtaining a high school diploma and an associate of arts (A.A.) degree through dual enrollment from an institution within the Florida College System or State University System, you have two options for admission consideration as a first-time-in-college (FTIC) student. The recommended path for consideration is completing a freshman application and then going through the freshman process (completing the STARS (formerly SSAR) and submitting your SAT/ACT/CLT scores) and receiving a freshman decision. If we cannot offer you admission through that process, then we will ask if you would like to be considered as a transfer student and create a transfer application on your behalf so you would have both avenues available for admission consideration. The other path is being considered only as a transfer student. This path does not consider test scores in the admissions review but the colleges will be looking at the prerequisites needed for your intended major and your college GPA to evaluate competitiveness. The opportunity for transfer students to change their major after admission is extremely limited so you need to consider your choice of major carefully. Transfer admissions are reviewed on a different timeline so your decision may not be available before May 1st. If you are admitted under the FL BOG 6.005 regulation and do not intend to receive your A.A. degree, you must notify the Office of Admissions immediately. If you do not receive your A.A.

Bachelor of Health Science: Bachelor of Health Science - Communication Science and Disorders majors can start Fall only. Bachelor of Health Science - Health Science majors can start Summer B or Fall. * Students in the Pre-Rehabilitation Specialization can complete BSC2005 and BSC2005L. Only students interested in Occupational Therapy should take BSC2005, though BSC2010 is preferred.
