Transfer Excellence Scholarship Requirements: A Comprehensive Guide
Funding higher education is a significant concern for many students. Fortunately, numerous scholarships are available to help students achieve their academic goals. This article focuses on transfer excellence scholarships, particularly those offered at the University of Houston (UH) and other institutions, outlining their requirements, eligibility criteria, and benefits.
University of Houston Scholarships
The University of Houston provides various scholarships to support incoming freshmen and transfer students. These scholarships are academically competitive and aim to recognize and reward outstanding academic achievement.
General Scholarships for Freshmen
UH offers general scholarships to incoming freshmen who demonstrate remarkable academic success. To be considered, students must apply by the priority date, typically in early November of their senior year. These scholarships are renewable for up to four years, provided the student meets the renewal criteria each year at UH.
Distinguished Scholarship
High-achieving students may receive an invitation to apply for the Distinguished Scholarship. This prestigious scholarship includes benefits such as:
- Research stipend
- A one-time $2,000 study abroad stipend
- On-campus housing and a meal plan for the first two years at UH
To be eligible for the Tier One Scholarship, students must complete the Tier One Scholarship application and the application for admission to the University of Houston no later than Nov. 3, 2025. Additionally, a letter of recommendation is required. Selected candidates will be invited for interviews in January and notified of the results by Dec. 15, 2025.

Financial Aid and Cost of Attendance
A student’s total financial aid, including scholarships, cannot exceed the cost of attendance (COA). The COA includes tuition and fees, housing and food, books and supplies, transportation, and personal expenses. The amount of the Federal Pell Grant Program funds is also considered.
Academic Requirements
To maintain scholarship eligibility, students must:
- Enroll in at least 12 credit hours each semester.
- Maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0.
- Ensure that all courses are taken at UH.
Note that while repeated courses do not count toward your cumulative GPA, tuition and fees for those courses will not be funded by the scholarship.
Transfer Achievement Scholarship
For students transferring to UH, the Transfer Achievement Scholarship offers a one-time award of $1,000. This scholarship is available to students admitted for the fall semester, as spring and summer admits are not eligible. To qualify, students must be currently enrolled full-time and maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA. Awards are offered to eligible applicants as funding is available.

UH also offers several other scholarships with specific criteria:

Appeals are decided on a case-by-case basis and the outcome of any appeal will depend on: the nature of the circumstances; the quality of the documentation provided; your current academic progress; the nature of any violation of the university’s Student Conduct Code; and fund availability.
Appeals should be submitted by Oct. 1.
CU Boulder has a responsibility to provide a safe and nondiscriminatory environment. Please be aware that if your appeal references sexual misconduct or protected class discrimination or harassment, the Office of Financial Aid is obligated to report allegations of this nature to the Office of Institutional Equity and Compliance (OIEC) in addition to considering your appeal on these grounds. OIEC may contact you in this case, but you may choose not to respond.
You may defer your admission to CU Boulder for up to one year and retain the Scholarship. You must contact the Office of Admissions to formally request a deferral.
Summer school is not funded.
You may use the scholarship for semesters in CU Boulder sponsored Education Abroad programs of at least 12 credit hours per semester. The scholarship will not be automatically reactivated upon your return.
Cost of Attendance (COA)
The Cost of Attendance (COA), also known as the cost of education or "budget," is the total amount it should cost a student to go to school for one year/scholarship period. This amount includes tuition and fees, housing and food, and allowances for books and supplies, transportation, and personal and incidental expenses.
The total of any financial aid that you receive, including this scholarship, cannot exceed your COA.
