For many, college can be a scary time. The Union provides a home on campus. From its inception, students have been integral to the Union's development, shaping it into the central hub it is today. The Union has become an even more important community center as individual communities form across campus.
A Dream Realized: The Genesis of the Union
In 1947, the University of Utah recognized the need for a dedicated space to serve as the heart of campus life. This vision culminated in the construction of a new Union building, a project that garnered significant student support. The annual student building fee increased from $16 to $20 to help finance the construction. Even back when the Union was first built, students were involved in the process. A plaque inside the Union encapsulates this sentiment, dedicating the building to "an invigorating force of unified spirit to every section of the University of Utah’s campus." It calls the Union a generator of a new stature in growth unifying students, faculty, and alumni. The dream was realized in October 1956.

The Union is home to so many amazing resources. You can find everything you basically need in there. The Union provides a wide array of resources and services catering to the diverse needs of the student body. The union that we have now is 150,000 square feet or so. It was built with the idea of 10,000 students on campus.

The Union is not merely a building; it is a dynamic space that comes alive with a multitude of events and activities. Huo and her team at UPC work to accomplish this primarily through the many events they hold at the Union. The Union hosts countless events such as Crimson Nights, the Experimental Series, and new student orientations. 66 years since the Union was first opened, that force of unified spirit is still as vibrant as ever.
A Stage for Prominent Voices
Throughout its history, the Union has served as a platform for prominent speakers and performers, enriching the intellectual and cultural landscape of the University. The building has also hosted many notable speakers and performers, such as Dr. Martin Luther King. Jr. and The Grateful Dead. “In the cases where they call us and they say, ‘we want to come to the student Union,’ it’s always because their perception is that it’s the heart of campus,” Dalley said.
