A Legacy of Excellence: The History of University of South Dakota Basketball
The University of South Dakota (USD) boasts a rich athletic tradition, marked by numerous Summit League titles and the achievements of athletes on state, national, and global platforms. Within this vibrant athletic landscape, the South Dakota Coyotes men's basketball team holds a significant place. This article explores the history of the USD basketball program, from its Division II national championship to its current standing in Division I.
Early Years and Division II Dominance
Prior to transitioning to Division I in the 2008-09 season, the Coyotes were a force to be reckoned with in NCAA Division II as members of the North Central Conference (NCC). The pinnacle of this era came in 1958 when they were crowned Division II National Champions. This victory remains a cherished moment in the program's history, symbolizing the dedication and talent of the players and coaches of that era.
The Coyotes made 13 appearances in the NCAA Division II Tournament, compiling a record of 17 wins and 12 losses. This consistent presence in the national tournament underscores the program's sustained success at the Division II level. They also appeared in one NAIA tournament.
Transition to Division I and the Summit League
The move to Division I marked a new chapter for the South Dakota Coyotes men's basketball team. They joined the Summit League, a conference known for its competitive basketball programs. This transition presented both challenges and opportunities, requiring the team to adapt to a higher level of competition and a broader national stage.
Today, the Coyotes continue to strive for excellence under the leadership of head coach Eric Peterson. They play their home games at the Sanford Coyote Sports Center, a modern facility that provides a true Division I atmosphere.
