Edward Mintz, a distinguished neuroanesthesiologist, physician-scientist, and educator. Dr. Mintz is nationally recognized for his leadership in perioperative operations and his groundbreaking research on brain development under anesthesia, which has significantly shaped the field. His impressive scholarly contributions include over 75 published works, and he has maintained continuous NIH funding for an impressive 15 years, alongside a proven record of operational excellence. In the Department of Surgery, the Division of Cardiac Surgery is delighted to welcome Dr. Paul Kirshbom to its esteemed faculty. Dr. Kirshbom brings a wealth of experience and a distinguished academic background. He earned his BA in Biology from Johns Hopkins University in 1987 and subsequently completed his medical degree at Johns Hopkins University in 1991. His postgraduate training includes a General Surgery Residency and Cardiothoracic Fellowship at Duke University in Durham, NC, followed by a Pediatric Cardiothoracic Fellowship at the Children's Hospital of Pennsylvania in 2002. Since completing his training, Dr. Kirshbom's practice will encompass all facets of Congenital Heart Surgery, catering to patients ranging from neonates to adults. The University of Maryland is exceptionally fortunate to welcome Dr. Kirshbom back to Baltimore as a Professor in Cardiac Surgery, and the institution eagerly anticipates the significant contributions he will make to patient care. A poignant symbol of enduring professional relationships and shared commitment, a photograph captures Dr. Joseph Forbess, Professor, Director of the Children's Heart Program in the Division of Cardiovascular Surgery, alongside Dr. Paul Kirshbom in the Chair's Office of the University of Maryland School of Medicine Department of Surgery. These two accomplished surgeons share a professional and personal bond, a friendship that has flourished for over three decades, originating from their early days as General Surgery Interns at Duke University in the early 1990s.
The Department of Diagnostic Radiology & Nuclear Medicine is equally excited to welcome Dr. Tarek N. Hanna, a national leader in emergency and trauma radiology, as its next Chair, beginning September 2025. Dr. Hanna is a nationally recognized expert in emergency and trauma radiology. Joining the University of Maryland from Emory University School of Medicine, where he has been a faculty member since 2013, Dr. Hanna currently holds the positions of Professor, Vice Chair of Diagnostic Imaging, and Division Director of Emergency and Trauma Imaging. He is widely respected as an academic leader in radiology best practices, with a clinical and research focus dedicated to optimizing emergency imaging operations and minimizing diagnostic errors to enhance patient outcomes.
