Transferring to the University of Georgia: A Comprehensive Guide
Transferring to a new university can be a complex process, requiring careful planning and attention to detail. This guide aims to provide prospective transfer students with a comprehensive overview of the requirements and considerations for transferring to the University of Georgia (UGA). Whether you're a freshman at a community college or a student at another four-year institution, this information will help you navigate the transfer process and make informed decisions.
Understanding UGA's Transfer Requirements
UGA has specific requirements for students looking to transfer. These requirements are subject to change each semester based on the availability of space. Therefore, it is essential to stay updated on the latest guidelines from the university.
GPA and Credit Hours
The University of Georgia (UGA) requires a minimum overall college GPA of 3.0. However, the acceptance rate for transfer students is quite competitive, so a higher GPA might put you in a stronger position. You should aim to complete at least 30 semester hours, or 45 quarter hours, of transferable college credit by the application deadline, equivalent to about one year of full-time study. Developmental or remedial, technical, vocational, physical education activity, or certificate-level courses are typically not considered in these totals.
Different GPA baselines are set depending on the hours that transfer into the University of Georgia, with a change in class standing every 30 semester hours.
To be eligible for transfer admission consideration to the undergraduate program on UGA’s Athens campus, you must have:

- 30-59 completed hours of transferable credit by the application deadline with a 3.30 or higher calculated transfer GPA, or
- 60+ completed hours of transferable credit by the application with a 3.00 or higher calculated transfer GPA, and
- graduated from high school at least 12 months prior to the term of intended enrollment, and
- completed at least one year of college by the term of intended enrollment.
Transfer GPA Calculation
When reviewing a file, the best indication of academic success at UGA is a student’s calculated transfer GPA along with the number of classes completed. In calculating your GPA, UGA uses all academic grades you have earned in transferable courses (including D’s, F’s and WF’s) from every college you have attended. If a course is repeated, both grades will be used. UGA only reviews transfer work with specific course titles, course numbers, and credit hours.
Coursework
Complete your basic core classes - English, math, foreign language, etc. Furthermore, try to take classes that are similar to the ones you would take as a UGA freshman in your chosen major. This will show UGA that you're ready for their coursework.
UGA also places emphasis on rigorous academic courses and looking for students who have shown significant improvement over time. So, along with maintaining a good GPA, you should also consider taking courses relevant to your intended major at UGA.
Application Requirements
The application process also involves submitting the Coalition Application or UGA's application, college transcript(s), high school transcript, and a $70 application fee.
Transfer Equivalency
Check out how to use the UGA Transfer Equivalency Portal. It's also essential you review UGA's transfer equivalency to confirm that the courses you've taken at your current institution will transfer to UGA.

Key Considerations for Transfer Students
Planning Your Coursework
The challenge for the transfer student in planning is to make the best possible choices for the degree program they eventually want to complete. A smooth transfer requires careful preparation and attention to detail.
Space-Available Basis
Transfer admission decisions are made on a space-as-available basis. Thus, there are neither GPA nor completed credit hour levels that guarantee admission.
Purpose Statement
Under certain circumstances, for students closer to the minimum consideration levels, your Purpose Statement may be utilized as a component of our overall review.
English Proficiency
If English is not your first language, you must show proof of English Proficiency. For International Transfers, non-transferable coursework includes English as a Second Language, more than one hour of Physical Education, applied, technical, diploma or certificate credit.
Why College-Level Performance Matters
Transfer applicants are evaluated solely on their demonstrated college-level performance because college-level work is the best indicator of readiness for UGA. High school academic record and standardized tests are not considered.
