The College Board’s “Annual Trends in College Pricing” report has consistently ranked Florida’s public universities as the most affordable in the nation for bachelor’s degrees. For six consecutive years, the average State University System (SUS) student has paid a net of $270 for a bachelor’s degree after factoring in Florida’s investment in financial aid. Impressively, within the SUS, over 17,000 fewer resident undergraduate students took out loans in 2020-21 compared to 2019-20, with 77% of resident undergraduate students not taking out any loans.

Understanding the Admissions Process

The University of Florida employs a comprehensive review process, considering both academic and non-academic factors to assess a candidate's potential for success. Key Dates and Deadlines

Staying organized and meeting deadlines is crucial for a successful application. Here are some important dates to keep in mind:

UF Application Deadline: November 1st
SSAR (Self-Reported Student Academic Record) Deadline: December 1st
Test Score Deadline: December 15th

It is recommended to submit all materials together, if possible.

Application Options: Early Action and Regular Decision

The University of Florida provides two options for prospective students to apply: Early Action (EA) and Regular Decision (RD). EA is a non-binding way to apply to UF and receive an admission decision sooner than those applying in the RD round. If a student applies in EA, they will receive an admissions decision of either admit, deny or defer. All EA decisions for admits are non-binding. If a student applies in RD, they will receive an admissions decision of either admit, waitlist, other pathways (Innovation Academy, PaCE, partnership programs) or deny.

Required Credentials

Applications cannot be considered until the Office of Admissions receives all required credentials. Freshman applicants with coursework completed outside the US must submit at least three full years of their most current secondary school transcripts, in addition to the final/senior year schedule or predicted grades, in both native language of instruction, and if applicable, a certified English translation. Unofficial transcripts are accepted throughout the initial review process. Applicants should not attempt to enter grades from a non-US transcript into the Student Self-Reported Academic Record (SSAR) system.

Freshman Admission Requirements

Academic Performance

The state of Florida mandates a minimum 2.5 academic cumulative GPA from high school for all freshman applicants. However, as a Top 10 public university, UF’s standards are higher than the state minimums. Admitted applicants to UF typically have a GPA of 3.7 and above, which may also vary depending on the competitiveness of your intended major.

UF considers weighted GPA as one of its admissions factors, with its middle 50 percentile ranging from 4.4 to 4.6, indicating that you will likely have to take higher level classes like AP and IB classes in order to be a competitive candidate for UF.

Standardized Test Scores

Freshman applicants who graduated high school less than 5 years ago will need to submit test scores to the university as part of the admissions process. Freshman applicants must submit test scores from the SAT, ACT and/or CLT. UF has no test preference. We will superscore (take the highest scores for each subsection) to create the highest possible total score.

SAT: A composite score ranging between 1310 to 1450 is generally expected.
ACT: A composite score ranging from 30 to 34 is considered competitive.

UF superscores the SAT, ACT and CLT. If you take a test multiple times, they will combine your highest subsection scores across test dates for the same exam. Because UF superscores, they encourage you to submit all SAT, ACT and CLT scores.

Self-Reported Student Academic Record (SSAR)

Applicants must complete the Self-Reported Transcript and Academic Record System (STARS, formerly called the SSAR). On the STARS, list your high school courses and grades exactly as they appear on your high school and/or college transcript. Submit and link your STARS to your application.

Extracurricular Activities

While UF isn't looking for any particular type of extracurricular, it is important that your extracurriculars are valuable to you.

Honors Program Essay Prompts

Why is applying for the UF Honors Program important to you? Which aspects of the program’s three pillars of opportunity, community, and challenge pique your interests? How would you engage with the program to exemplify these pillars yourself? How does the program factor into your long-term goals?
Identify two topics you have previously studied that do not traditionally overlap. How do you envision you might bring these topics together during your time in Honors to engage a pressing societal, medical, or technological concern? The concern you wish to engage could be of local, national, or global scope, but you should be clear about the issue you want to address.

Additional Considerations

Foreign Language: It is preferable that students have two years of foreign language instruction or be able to document an equivalent level of proficiency.
Dual Enrollment: Students receiving their high school diploma and an Associate of Arts degree (A.A.) from a Florida College System (FCS) or State University (SUS) institution at the same time should complete the freshman application. If we are unable to offer you admission at the freshman level, you will be provided with the opportunity to have your application reconsidered as an upper-division transfer. Students admitted via transfer admission may have their offer of admission rescinded if they do not complete the required prerequisites and A.A. degree prior to enrollment.

Transfer Admission Requirements

Transfer applications generally are received six to nine months before the term begins. Admissions requirements are based off the number of transferable college credits you will have earned prior to your intended first term in our program.

Graduate Admission Requirements

Applicants must meet the requirements of both the academic unit and the Graduate School to be admitted for graduate study. For applicants with a bachelor’s degree only, a minimum grade point average of B (3.0), calculated from all grades and credits after the semester where the applicant reached 60 semester hours or 90 quarter hours is required. Applicants should refer directly to their intended academic units for Graduate Record Examination (GRE) or Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) requirements.

Admission to the Graduate School requires a baccalaureate degree from a college, university, or higher education institution accredited by the Higher Learning Commission, the Middle States Commission on Higher Education, the New England Commission on Higher Education, the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities, the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, or the Western Association of Schools and Colleges.

Applicants must arrange to send ofﬁcial transcripts from each institution attended to the Ofﬁce of Admissions. These transcripts must be received directly from the registrar of the institution where the work was done. Admission requirements of an academic unit are often more rigorous than the minimum requirements set by the Graduate School.

Additional Requirements for All Students

Immunization

The University of Florida requires that all new students show proof of certain immunizations prior to attending UF. Once received, your completed form will be reviewed by UF Health Compliance Ofﬁce staff. Students must comply with the University’s immunization and health insurance requirements. Students shall be required to show documentation of speciﬁc vaccinations or proof of immunity for Measles/Mumps/Rubella (MMR), Hepatitis B, and Meningitis.

Computer Competency

Access to and on-going use of a computer is required for all students to complete their degree programs successfully. The University of Florida expects each student to acquire computer hardware and software appropriate to their degree program. Competency in the basic use of a computer is a requirement for graduation.

Special Programs

Honors Program

Students interested in applying for The Honors Program should indicate this on the Common App and answer the additional essay question. The UF Honors Program offers smaller, enriched classes taught by leading faculty and provides an array of opportunities beyond the classroom. Honors Gators benefit from specialized advising and coaching.

Innovation Academy

The Innovation Academy is a four-year, undergraduate degree pathway centered around entrepreneurship, ethics and leadership that embeds an innovation minor into 25+ majors. This program begins in the spring semester and follows a spring/summer only schedule, giving students the opportunity to pursue internships, research, study abroad or other interests during their fall semester. To apply for IA, students need to indicate interest, write an additional essay and select a major within IA-all in their Common App.

Financial Considerations

Tuition Deposit

Freshmen are required to confirm enrollment and pay a $200 non-refundable tuition deposit no later than May 1 to secure their place in the class. The tuition deposit will be credited to the student’s account and applied toward the first-semester tuition.

Financial Aid
