University of Delaware Diploma Programs: A Comprehensive Guide

The University of Delaware offers a wide array of diploma programs and continuing studies options designed to cater to diverse educational needs. From traditional degree programs to specialized certificates and lifelong learning opportunities, UD provides pathways for academic advancement, professional development, and personal enrichment. This article delves into the various diploma programs, continuing studies, and resources available at the University of Delaware.

Understanding Your Diploma

The University of Delaware considers the diploma a ceremonial document, a tangible symbol of academic achievement and dedication. It represents the culmination of years of hard work and serves as a memento of the graduate's time at UD.

Diploma Name Considerations

Students are responsible for ensuring that their names are listed correctly in UDSIS prior to graduation. The diploma is printed using the Primary name that appears in your UDSIS Personal Information tile > Personal Details, unless a Diploma Name is provided. Degree candidates may select to have a Diploma Name that is different from their legal name on their student record (noted as the "Primary Name" in UDSIS).

Before adding a Diploma Name, please take into consideration that you may need to use your diploma in conjunction with your official transcript for employment, licensure [Law, Medicine, Nursing, etc.], credentialing, visa applications, and/or other processes that require verification of your education records and the use of your legal name. For students and those who plan to live, study, or work outside of the United States, please be aware that some countries consider the diploma a credential document. This means you may be asked to show your Diploma to confirm your educational credential.

Specifying a Diploma Name

To specify a Diploma Name, go to your Personal Information tile, and on the Personal Details screen click the + sign to add a Name with type: Diploma. Do not specify Prefix; this will not be used. Click Save. Do not use a campus or temporary address for Diploma shipping. In addition, students are strongly encouraged to ship the diploma within the United States.

Replacement Diplomas

A student who needs to order a replacement diploma, either because theirs was lost/damaged or because they are required to show a copy with their legal name for verification purposes, may submit a Diploma Replacement request form.

Division of Professional and Continuing Studies (UD PCS)

University of Delaware’s Division of Professional and Continuing Studies (UD PCS) offers various types of education programs and courses. They offer credit courses, noncredit certificate programs, seminars, conferences and other short programs that provide you with practical knowledge and skills as well as resume-building credentials. Through UD PCS, the University of Delaware extends its vast resources, research, technology and knowledge. You don’t have to become formally admitted to the University of Delaware in order to register for credit courses, including distance learning courses.

Innovation in Course Development

The classes debut this spring after months of market analysis by UD’s Division of Professional and Continuing Studies (UD PCS), which assessed the needs of employers and tracked shifts in the job market to determine five fresh certificate programs. “Right now, UD PCS is going through probably the largest innovation cycle since our founding in 1952,” said Vic Wang, director of noncredit programs for UD PCS. Dubbed “HenVenture,” the event challenged the audience to assess the market potential of several course proposals, then cast their vote for those that seemed most promising. One of the judges, Joanna Staib, keeps a keen eye out for promising employment fields in her role as executive director of the Delaware Workforce Development Board. “To me that is a promising emerging occupation,” she said.

The Course Creation Process

The process for creating new offerings is always in motion at UD PCS. Program managers keep close tabs on the evolving job market, looking for opportunities to match new course topics with high-demand jobs. In its ongoing search, UD PCS turns to data-driven market analysis, and even the helping hand of artificial intelligence. Staffers analyze historic and future job trends, regionally and nationally, then ask key questions: How open is the market to workers with this type of education, and how long do openings stay unfilled? “We ask, what kind of competitive landscape are we currently looking at? Once the proposals have been narrowed to those with the most potential, UD PCS begins reaching out to industry experts and UD faculty who might serve as instructors. The HenVenture event will now likely become a yearly part of that process, but UD PCS is always receptive to campus and public input on possible course additions.

Sources of Ideas

Ideas come from everywhere - students, instructors, UD faculty and staff, advisory board, annual learning survey, AI, market research. Internal and external feedback is gathered, narrowing the field to the most viable candidates, which are reviewed with feasibility in mind.

Accessibility and Reach

The Division of Professional and Continuing Studies (UD PCS) extends the University of Delaware’s academic resources throughout the state and beyond through credit courses, certificate programs, non-degree short courses, distance learning, institutes and conferences. Offered in the fall and spring semesters, as well as during the winter and summer sessions, programs are taught or conducted by University faculty members and by outstanding professionals in their particular subject areas.
