Understanding University of Cincinnati Tuition Per Semester

Investing in a college education is one of the most impactful decisions you can make for future success. At the University of Cincinnati (UC), understanding the tuition structure is crucial for financial planning. Tuition amounts are set by the university; however, college, program level (undergraduate, graduate, or professional), or the course of study itself may involve specialized fees. This article breaks down the various aspects of UC tuition per semester, helping prospective and current students navigate the costs associated with attending the university.

Tuition Guarantee and Cohort System

Beginning in Fall 2019, the University of Cincinnati introduced the Cincinnati Tuition Guarantee for new, degree-seeking first-year and transfer students. The Cincinnati Tuition Guarantee is a cohort-based program that sets tuition, mandatory fees, and room and board at a consistent rate for up to four or five years depending on the length of a student's academic program. This provides financial predictability for students and their families. Undergraduate tuition is determined by your college program location and cohort groups based on your academic year of admission. Non-matriculated students are charged the tuition and fees of the current cohort. For example, a non-matriculated student enrolled in Fall semester 2022 will pay Cohort 2022-23 rates.

Full-Time vs. Part-Time Status

The University of Cincinnati differentiates tuition costs based on enrollment status: full-time or part-time.

Full-Time Students: If you are enrolled for 12 or more semester credit hours, you are considered a full-time student, and your fees are charged on the basis of a full-time semester fee charge. Full-time tuition normally covers 12 to 18 credit hours per semester. E - Full-time is 12-18 hours for undergraduates and Law students, 10-18 hours for graduate and PharmD, and 24 or more hours in the M.D.

Part-Time Students: If you are taking fewer than 12 hours per semester, you will be charged by the credit hour.

Residency Status: Ohio Residents vs. Non-Residents

Fees are determined on the basis of whether you are a resident of the State of Ohio or you live outside the state. Lower fees are assessed to Ohio residents because the state provides support to the university for them. Regardless of the program, non-residents of the state of Ohio will be charged a non-resident fee. Your residency is determined by the Office of the Registrar. Students living outside the state of Ohio must also pay an additional “non-resident” fee to enroll in courses at UC Online. State residency is determined by the Office of the Registrar.

The University of Cincinnati offers options for full-time, campus-based undergraduate and graduate students who are residents of nearby counties in Kentucky and Indiana to offset the costs of out-of-state tuition rates. For students in nearby Kentucky counties, the college offers the metropolitan tuition rate. Indiana residents are also offered an opportunity for reduced tuition through the Indiana Reciprocity agreement. Degree-seeking students (depending on major) at UC Clermont may be eligible for the Kentucky or Indiana reciprocity tuition rates.

Additional Fees

Beyond the base tuition, students should be aware of several other potential fees:

Mandatory Fees: This required fee applies to all undergraduate, graduate, and professional students. This required fee provides funding for non-instructional services and is assessed uniformly to all enrolled students. These services are directly related to students' academic progression through the university. The fee also enhances many programs available to and used by all students including many web-delivered services. This required fee for campus-based students covers various recreational and entertainment facilities and programming that can be utilized by all students to enhance the campus environment and increase student engagement.

Program Fees: Students could be assessed some or several of the following fees, in addition to the fees above. Program Fees are a required fee that is specific to a students academic career, program and plan.

Differential Fee: Full-time students taking classes outside of their primary career and/or campus, where costs are higher, will be subject to a “differential fee.” The amount of the fee is the difference between their primary career/campus flat rate instructional fee and the higher career/campus instructional fee. This fee will be assessed only when a student is enrolled in 7 or more credit hours at the campus/career with the higher costs. Students taking fewer than 7 hours will not be assessed this fee. A differential fee will be assessed when a full-time Clermont student takes seven or more of their credit hours from an Uptown Campus college. **Applies to full-time students taking 7 or more units on main campus. Full time students matriculated at UCBA pay full-time UCBA fees; however, if taking 7 or more credit hours of Uptown courses, students will be charged a differential fee. UCBA students registering as part-time students with Uptown campus courses will be charged appropriate Uptown campus fees.

First-Year Student Success Fee: The first-year student success fee is assessed each term to students with a UCBA primary program with <30 cummulative earned credit hours/units.

***This fee is assessed each term to students with a UCBA primary program with < 30 cumulative earned credit hours/units.

Professional Practice Fee: * The Professional Practice Fee is charged in place of tuition for co-op terms. Aid may also adjust based on co-op rotation so it is important to inform Student Financial Aid of your plans when accepting aid using the link on the award offer.

UCBA Fees: *For courses offered by UCBA or Clermont ONLY. UCBA students registering as part-time students with Uptown campus courses will be charged appropriate Uptown campus fees.

  • Bloodborne Pathogen Insurance is charged to both part-time students and full-time students on a yearly basis.

Late Registration Fees: A $25 Late Registration Fees will be charged for each class that is added after the last day to drop for that session.

Costs Beyond Tuition

Attending college costs more than just tuition (including program fees). Attending college also includes indirect costs. Your overall cost of attendance budget essentially covers costs of tuition through toothpaste. The total amount we budget for a typical new on-campus, full-time undergraduate, Ohio resident for the basic 2-semester academic year on Uptown Campus is $43,276.

Here are some additional costs to consider:

  • Housing and Food: Housing and food amounts are averages for each tuition guarantee cohort based on when a degree-seeking student first enrolls.
  • Books and Supplies: Tuition and fees are for 12-18 hours per semester. This does not include additional costs such as books, lab/college/program fees.
  • Personal Expenses: Personal expenses vary from student-to-student, but understanding these costs help students plan for expenses beyond tuition.
  • Loan Fees: Additionally, undergraduate students borrowing student loans will see $37 for loan fees added to their budget or $319 if parents are borrowing a Federal PLUS Loan.

Remember that what you actually spend in non-billed expenses may differ from the amounts budgeted by the Student Financial Aid Office.

UC Online Programs

The University of Cincinnati's online programs allow students to pursue degrees without having to quit their jobs. UC Online course fees differ depending on the program. The one fee applied across all UC Online programs is the distance learning fee. Our distance learning programs do not have ITIE fees, but do have specific DL fees.

Financial Aid and Affordability

At the same time, eligibility for complete aid packages can only be determined following an offer of admission to the university and completion of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The FAFSA should be completed as soon after October 1 as possible each year in order to be considered for maximum aid eligibility for limited funding sources. UC Clermont offers some of the most affordable tuition in the state of Ohio - almost half the cost of other colleges and universities.

Payment Options

UC Blue Ash College offers many ways for you to conveniently make payments. Planning for college can be tough, but paying for it shouldn't be.

Lindner College of Business Undergraduate Program Fee

To continually improve the quality of undergraduate student learning, the Lindner College of Business reinvests all undergraduate program fees, as well as targeted capital campaign fundraising. Starting in the fall of 2015, the fee has increased by $50 each semester for full-time students to fund expansion of Lindner Career Services. As a result, all professional development and experience support such as co-ops, internships, and post-graduation placement are now supported by Lindner Career Services. This fee increase replaces the current cost of co-op when Lindner students work with other university services, resulting in an overall reduction of student expenses.
