The Historical Flags of the University of Central Florida: A Symbol of Growth and Identity
The University of Central Florida (UCF), a public research university with its main campus in unincorporated Orange County, Florida, has evolved significantly since its establishment. From its humble beginnings as Florida Technological University (FTU) in 1963 to its current status as one of the largest universities in the United States, UCF's symbols, traditions, and spirit have played a vital role in shaping its identity. While the university doesn't have a specific "university flag history" in the same way a nation or state does, the evolution of its logos, colors, and symbols reflects its journey.
From SpaceU to UCF: The Early Years
Founded on June 10, 1963, by the Florida Legislature, the university was initially named Florida Technological University (FTU) from 1966 to 1978. This followed President John F. Kennedy's 1962 speech about going to the moon, which grew the space program in Central Florida because of its proximity to Cape Canaveral. The institution's original mission was to educate students for careers in engineering and other technological fields, reflecting Central Florida's role in the burgeoning space program.
The university's original seal, designed in consultation with a citizen advisory group by its first president, Charles Millican, featured Pegasus, the mythological winged horse. According to Millican, Pegasus "carried their hopes, their inspirations and their poetry into the skies," symbolizing the university's aspirations. The motto "Reach for the Stars" was also established, reinforcing the university's connection to the space program and its commitment to excellence. The university colors of black and gold were chosen for their dignity and versatility.
Mascot Evolution: From Citronaut to Knightro
The university's first mascot was the Citronaut, a mix of an orange and an astronaut. However, the Citronaut proved unpopular. In 1969, The Central Florida Future, the student newspaper, solicited mascot suggestions from students and faculty. The search for a replacement was unsuccessful until 1970, when Judy Hines proposed Vincent the Vulture, who served as the university's unofficial mascot for over a year.
In 1994, Knightro debuted at the first Spirit Splash as a knight in golden armor without a name. Over the next year, the golden mascot made appearances at events, sporting events, and other student gatherings before being officially named Knightro. You’ll see Knightro around campus, making appearances at athletics events, pep rallies and so much more. “It me.” The newest addition to athletics and campus events is a mini horse who goes by Knugget. This four-legged, fluffy and absolutely adorable member of Knight Nation hypes up students and spreads cheer everywhere. If you ever run into Knugget around campus, be sure to give him some well-deserved pets.

Transition to UCF: A Broadening Mission
In 1978, Trevor Colbourn became the university's second president and recognized the diversification and growth of UCF's academic programs. He recognized that the university's name no longer reflected its mission as the university developed strong business, education, and liberal arts programs. The name was officially changed to the University of Central Florida to reflect its broader scope.
The Modern Era: Building Traditions and Spirit
Under the leadership of President John C. Hitt, who served from 1992 to 2018, UCF experienced significant growth in enrollment, academic standing, and athletic programs. New traditions emerged, solidifying UCF's unique campus culture.
Game Day Traditions

A fan favorite since debuting in 2017, this matchup honors UCF’s origin story as SpaceU - founded to fuel our nation’s space program and help put humans on the moon.
Campus Traditions
As a Knight, you’re invited to participate in fun traditions throughout the entire year. Start off your time at UCF right with Pegasus Palooza! The Knighting is your formal convocation, marking your induction as an official student at UCF while welcoming new Knights to campus, inspiring your journey as a Knight and offering more insight about UCF. Spirit Splash is one of the most popular events on campus - and has been voted one of the best college traditions in the nation. Part of Homecoming Week, this wet and wild pep rally invites Knights to charge into the Reflecting Pond and catch collectible rubber ducks and commemorative T-shirts. Spend quality time with family, showing them around campus and giving them a taste of what Knight life is all about. Grab your comfy shoes for this one. Cultivate your creativity during UCF Celebrates the Arts. Grab a blanket and pack a picnic to enjoy Symphony Under the Stars. If you like roller coasters, you’ll love Universal Knights. Each spring, join thousands of Knights with exclusive, late-night access to Universal’s Islands of Adventure. It’s the greatest study break of the year. Those who eat together stay together. The Showcase of Undergraduate Research Excellence is part of Student Research Week.
Campus Landmarks
Our most recognizable landmark, the Reflecting Pond has a unique place in UCF history. It’s been around since the first year of classes and even served as a commencement ceremony location for several years. Today, it’s a great spot to relax in between classes and is hands-down one of the most popular backdrops for graduating Knights. Outdoor events. Tailgate activities. College GameDay backdrop. Memory Mall is packed throughout the year with students, alumni and visitors looking to enjoy some fun in the sun. As one of the focal points around campus, it’s quickly become an area for Knights to gather. You’d never guess that this open green space used to be a parking lot in our early years. Looking for peaceful scenery? Take in all nature has to offer at the Lake Claire Recreation Area. Find a quiet spot by the lake or take a study break with friends. There’s lots to see and do, from kayaking and paddleboarding to sand volleyball and cookouts. Plus, you won’t want to miss out on the free events here each semester. Don’t step on the seal! Legend says that you won’t graduate if you walk across the Pegasus seal in the Student Union. But once you have your diploma in hand? Go ahead and walk across it to celebrate your momentous achievement.
