University of Central Florida: A Network of Campuses Across the City

The University of Central Florida (UCF) stands as a prominent public research university, deeply embedded within the dynamic landscape of Central Florida. A History Rooted in the Space Race

UCF's origins are intrinsically linked to the burgeoning space program of the 1960s. Following President John F. Kennedy's ambitious goal of landing a crewed flight on the Moon by the end of the decade, Central Florida, with its proximity to Cape Canaveral, experienced a surge in the importance and scope of its space-related activities. In response to the growing need for skilled professionals in engineering and technology, local leaders and prominent residents successfully lobbied the Florida State Legislature to establish a new state university in East Central Florida.

On June 10, 1963, Senate Bill No. 125 was signed into law, authorizing the creation of what was initially known as Florida Technological University (FTU). The university's mission was clear: to provide non-segregated, coeducational education focused on preparing students for careers in the burgeoning space age. In 1978, Florida Technological University became the University of Central Florida.

The Main Campus: A Hub of Activity in East Orlando

Since 1968, the heart of UCF has been its expansive 1,420-acre main campus in east Orlando. This central location serves as the primary hub for academic, research, and student life activities. Designed with a pedestrian-oriented layout based on concentric circles, the campus fosters a sense of community and encourages interaction among students, faculty, and staff. The campus is designed to be pedestrian-oriented, with a series of concentric circles. The outermost circle is Gemini Blvd, which is also the main road for vehicular traffic on campus. Pegasus Circle contains the student union, with the John C. Hitt Library located directly to the south of it. Student housing is provided along the perimeter of the campus. The south side contains student recreation and wellness facilities, leisure pool, recreation park, and more student housing.

At the core of the main campus lies the John C. Hitt Library, a five-story building that houses the university's extensive print and media collection. Named in honor of UCF's fourth president, the library stands as a testament to the university's commitment to academic excellence and research. Leonardo Nierman's sculpture Flame of Hope is displayed outside the entrance to the building, and Nierman's stained glass Genesis window is exhibited on the third floor of the library building.

Expanding Horizons: Satellite Campuses and UCF Connect

Recognizing the need to extend its reach beyond the main campus, UCF has strategically established a network of satellite campuses and UCF Connect centers throughout Central Florida. These locations provide convenient access to UCF's academic programs and resources for students who may not be able to attend classes on the main campus.

UCF Connect offers centers conveniently located throughout Central Florida. These extend our reach to neighboring communities, within an 80-mile radius of the UCF Orlando campus. This fosters a seamless transition as you advance from your associate degree to upper-level division work on a bachelor’s degree.

UCF also houses a satellite campus in Cocoa, FL, near Kennedy Space Center. National Astronomy and Ionosphere Center is also managed by UCF.

A Diverse and Growing Student Body

UCF's student body consists of 61,456 undergraduates and 10,002 graduate and professional students and 490 M.D. students. UCF's enrollment has increased by over 60% this century, from 33,453 in 2000 to 64,318 in 2016. Of the more than 60,000 students, 11% are graduate and professional students, while women make up 55% of the student body.
