Nestled in the heart of Midtown Memphis, the University Club of Memphis has stood as a distinguished landmark of social and athletic life since its inception in 1907. The Genesis of a Memphis Institution
In the late 19th century, a wave of University Clubs began to emerge across the United States. Inspired by this trend, Nash Buckingham, a renowned writer and athlete, and J. Bayard Snowden, during a spring afternoon in 1907, recognized the need for a similar institution in Memphis. Following this meeting, they obtained a charter and began to assemble their club. With an initial group of 10 charter members, the Club was off to a festive start.
The Club's original mission was to foster an environment conducive to intellectual pursuits and social activities. By 1919, the club was reorganized by a group of 125 people representing 40 colleges and universities. A new charter was granted, allowing for 200 members. The Club established its domain in the Napoleon Hill Mansion at the corner of Madison and Third.
From Mansion to Modernity: A Timeline of Transformation
In 1924, a significant move occurred when The University Club purchased the Clarence Saunders' home on Central Avenue. This marked the beginning of an era of expansion, with the addition of an athletic building, squash and handball courts, and tennis courts over the subsequent two years. During this time, the Club also served as a boarding house for many of its collegiate members. However, tragedy struck in 1934 when a fire consumed the building, leading to dramatic escapes from the upper floor windows.
The University Club has seen numerous improvements and additions during its many years. In the late 1940s, the membership decided to give the place a makeover. By the end of the 1950s, the Club added an outdoor swimming pool and revamped its look by rebuilding the front of the club and renovating the Grill and Ballroom. A new athletic building was constructed in the 1960s.

The Club has continually evolved to meet the changing needs and expectations of its members. In the late 1940s, a significant decision was made to modernize the facilities. This culminated in the addition of an outdoor swimming pool and a comprehensive renovation of the Club's facade, Grill, and Ballroom by the end of the 1950s. Further expansion occurred in the 1960s with the construction of a new athletic building. In the early 1990's the Club officially amended its Bylaws to ensure the Club was non-discriminatory.

The University Club prohibits discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, age, disability, marital status, citizenship, national origin, veteran status, genetic information, or any similar characteristic.
The Nineteenth Century Club: A Parallel of Social and Cultural Impact
While focusing on the University Club, it's worth noting another significant institution in Memphis history: The Nineteenth Century Club. The Nineteenth Century Club is a historic philanthropic and cultural women's club based in Memphis, Tennessee. The Nineteenth Century Club adopted the idea that the community was an extended "household" that would benefit from the "gentler spirit" and "uplifting influence" of women, and shifted towards civic reform. The club was founded in May 1890 following an assembly of elite white women at the Gayoso Hotel in Memphis. The members wanted to participate in the development of the city and inject women's "gentler spirit" and more "loving wisdom" into municipal affairs.
In 1892, the Congress of the Association for the Advancement of Women met for the first time in a southern city at its 20th annual meeting with the Nineteenth Century Club. In 1897, the Hamburg branch of the club established the Hamburg Public Library in an effort to enrich the community and improve education. In 1926, the club acquired a mansion built in 1906 by Rowland Darnell, a great lumber magnate of Memphis, and remained there for over 20 years.
