University Arms Hotel: A Timeless Cambridge Icon, Reimagined
The University Arms Hotel, part of Marriott's Autograph Collection, stands as a landmark in the heart of Cambridge. Its history stretches back to 1834, and after a complete rebuild behind the original sandstone walls, it has emerged as a destination that blends historical charm with modern luxury. This article delves into the rich history of the hotel, its architectural transformation, its connection to the Autograph Collection, and the unique experiences it offers to guests.
A Legacy of Hospitality Since 1834
First opened in 1834, the University Arms is one of the oldest hotels in Cambridge. From its humble beginnings with just 15 guest rooms, it quickly became known as the most upscale hotel in Cambridge. Its prime location, nestled along the vast Parker's Piece lawns in the city's historic district, made it a favorite among visitors. Over the years, the hotel has witnessed countless stories, evolving with the city while retaining its essence of hospitality.
Architectural Transformation: A Blend of History and Modernity
Having likely been passed by unnoticed for years due to a 1960s extension that obscured much of its history from Regent’s Road, the hotel underwent a significant transformation, a complete rebuild behind the original sandstone walls, resulting in a winning hybrid of a brand-new hotel cleverly disguised as one which has simply been refreshed. The redevelopment was led by architect John Simpson, who ensured that the new building structure harmonized with Cambridge's architectural heritage. Simpson's design pays homage to the city's iconic style, creating a seamless blend of old and new.
The interiors, designed by Martin Brudnizki, further enhance the hotel's unique character. Brudnizki's design incorporates Edwardian and Victorian architectural elements, creating an ambiance that is both elegant and inviting. The literary and academic spirit of Cambridge is one of its central characteristics. Bespoke, leather-padded writing desks, low ottomans and tiered chandeliers in playful colours and rooms full of natural light. The result is ambitious, beautiful, and full of life.
A New Era of Accommodation
The hotel now boasts 192 rooms, a significant increase from its original 119. These rooms are divided into four main categories: Cosy, Classic, Superior, and Suites.

- Cosy Rooms: The 26 entry-level Cosy rooms face internally, ensuring a quiet and peaceful stay.
- Classic and Superior Rooms: These rooms offer a step up in space and amenities, providing a comfortable and stylish retreat.
- Suites: Each suite is individually designed to tell their own stories, themed around a different Cambridge scholar. The suites offer views of the city and Parker’s Piece outside; some even come with a traditional bookcase room divider, helping to retain a classically Cambridge feel.
All rooms feature Hypnos beds, 300-thread count sheets, tea and coffee making facilities, fresh milk, safes, and DR Harris toiletries in bathrooms with heated black and white tile-pattern floors and heated mirrors. The specification, furnishings and furniture are all of a very high standard - there are small desks intended to look like a scholar’s desk (with a mustard leatherette top), antique-looking lamps and pale blue walls.
Parker's Tavern: A Culinary Journey
Food at Parker’s Tavern is delicious and the menu has plenty of daily specials including the Hobson’s Choice Pie and Catch of the Day. Parker's Tavern, the hotel's bar and restaurant, is inspired by the communal dining halls of Cambridge's colleges. The English brasserie is in the capable hands of head chef Tristan Welch, who has designed every dish to be a whimsical re-imagining of a British classic, sourced from field, fen and England’s seas. For dessert, the best offering from Welch's imagination is the rice pudding souffle and something called the "Apple epiphany"-a red apple mousse dessert that celebrates Sir Isaac Newton’s discovery of gravity.
A Literary Haven
The literary and academic spirit of Cambridge is deeply ingrained in the hotel's design. Downstairs, the library pays homage to the destination's academic heritage. Curated by Heywood Hill, one of the leading bookshops of London, the library is filled with books from renowned authors, many with suites at University Arms named after them. The shelves themselves are well stocked, offering a curated selection of tomes to suite a variety of tastes, and not limiting themselves to classic texts. To prevent these precious tomes from being led astray, each book has a special sticker on the title page which explains that it belongs to the University Arms library.
Banquets and Meetings
Few halls in Cambridge can compete with the grandeur, elegance and history of the University Arms Ballroom. Constrained by the site, there is only the ballroom on the ground floor for meetings, which can take up to 180 for a banquet. Best of all are the lovely views over the green swathe of Parker’s Piece with new floor to ceiling windows, including some original stained-glass with Cambridge college shields. The space divides into two rooms; the Watson Room (capacity of 96 theatre-style) and the Crick Room (capacity of 70 theatre-style), both of which can be used separately. Flexible spaces provide plenty of options to suit your requirements and all the equipment you may need for your meeting or conference.
