Understanding the University of Kentucky Provost Scholarship Requirements
The University of Kentucky (UK) offers various scholarships to attract and support academically talented students. Among these, the Provost Scholarship stands out as a significant opportunity for incoming freshmen. This article aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the UK Provost Scholarship requirements, eligibility criteria, and related information, drawing upon the latest available data to ensure accuracy and clarity.
Academic-Based Eligibility
The Provost Scholarship is primarily awarded based on academic credentials. To be considered, prospective students must have their completed admission application and high school transcript received by December 1. Qualifying test scores must be submitted by January 15.
Kentucky Residents
For incoming Kentucky resident freshmen, the minimum requirement is an ACT score of 26 or an SAT score (Math + Critical Reading) of 1170, coupled with an unweighted high school GPA of 3.30. Meeting these criteria ensures consideration for the Provost Scholarship.
Non-Resident Freshmen
Non-resident freshmen have different benchmarks for various scholarships, including consideration for the "see blue." Scholarship with a minimum ACT score of 25 or SAT (M+CR) of 1130 and a 3.00 unweighted high school GPA. For the Bluegrass Spirit Scholarship, non-resident freshmen need a minimum ACT score of 25 or SAT (M+CR) of 1130 and a 3.50 unweighted high school GPA. The Kentucky Heritage Scholarship requires a minimum ACT score of 30 or SAT (M+CR) of 1330 and a 3.50 unweighted high school GPA.
Test-Optional Criteria
The University of Kentucky has a test-optional admission policy. To be eligible for this award, students must have a 3.30 GPA and a 26 ACT/1230 SAT or a 3.30 GPA and a 28 ACT/1300 SAT for traditional criteria, and a 3.50 or 3.75 GPA for test-optional criteria.

Scholarship Details and Benefits
The Provost Scholarship provides $1,500 per year for up to four years of undergraduate study. This scholarship is renewable, provided the student maintains full-time status (minimum 12 hours each semester) and achieves a 3.0 cumulative GPA. Eligibility is checked at the end of each spring term, and courses taken during the summer intersession do not count towards the cumulative GPA until the following spring term.
Overlapping Scholarships
It's important to note that incoming freshmen students may receive only one academic-based scholarship through the Academic Scholarship Program. However, students may receive Legacy Tuition funding in addition to an academic-based scholarship, such as the Bluegrass Spirit Scholarship. If a student is awarded a Singletary or Patterson Scholarship, that award will replace the Provost Scholarship.
Governor's Scholars and School for the Arts Scholarships
The University of Kentucky also offers special scholarships to students who complete the Kentucky Governor’s Scholars Program (GSP) and/or Governor’s School for the Arts (GSA) summer programs. GSP/GSA students applying with a minimum test score of 31 ACT or 1360 SAT (M+CR) and a minimum GPA of 3.50 on a 4.0 scale will receive a Presidential Scholarship, which provides in-state tuition for up to four years of undergraduate study. All other eligible GSP/GSA students will receive a Provost Scholarship.
Application Process
To be considered for academic and competitive scholarships, incoming freshmen students must be admitted and have all supporting documents on file, including a high school transcript, by December 1. Students with a minimum test score of 31 ACT or 1390 SAT and a minimum unweighted GPA of 3.50 are encouraged to apply for the University of Kentucky's competitive academic scholarships. Test-optional applicants must have a minimum unweighted high school GPA of 4.0.
Key Deadlines
- December 1: Completed admission application and all supporting documents, including high school transcript.
- January 15: Qualifying test scores must be received.
Financial Aid and Over-Award Policy
The Office of Student Financial Aid and Scholarships must calculate a cost of attendance budget for each student. The value listed for tuition on the Financial Aid Notification calculation is only an estimate of tuition charges and is not a bill. Some University of Kentucky classes have additional course or programming charges that are not covered under the tuition and mandatory fees.

The Office of Student Financial Aid and Scholarships is required to monitor and adjust students’ financial aid awards, including institutional scholarships, to eliminate over awards and/or overpayments in compliance with federal and state regulations and institutional policy. The monetary value of this scholarship may be adjusted if, in combination with any federal, state, or private need-based or non-need-based awards, this scholarship creates an over award. The combination of tuition-based scholarships from all sources may not exceed the total cost of tuition.
Maintaining Scholarship Eligibility
For four-year renewable academic scholarships, such as the Presidential, Bluegrass Spirit Scholarship, and Provost Scholarships, students are required to maintain full-time status (minimum 12 hours each semester) and achieve a 3.0 cumulative GPA. Singletary Scholarship recipients are required to achieve a 3.40 cumulative GPA. Scholarship eligibility is checked at the end of each spring term.
Scholarship Probation
Students receiving renewable academic-based scholarships are granted one semester of scholarship probation. Scholarship funds will not be provided during the probationary semester. A scholarship recipient whose cumulative grade point average falls below 3.0, but not lower than 2.000, at the May grade review, will be placed on scholarship probation for the following term. A scholarship will be reinstated for a student on probation only if the student completes twelve (12) semester hours and earns a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher by the end of the probationary semester.
Additional Scholarship Opportunities
Students are encouraged to check Scholarship Universe for additional external and internal scholarship opportunities. Several colleges and departments at UK administer their own scholarship programs. Students who have chosen an academic program are encouraged to contact their college/department regarding scholarship opportunities.
External Scholarships and Fellowships
External scholarships and fellowships are awards that are funded by sources (such as a non-government foundation or government agency) outside the University of Kentucky. These awards honor exceptional students across the nation, and UK students have received many of these awards. Scholarships supported by the Office of Nationally Competitive Scholarships involve both undergraduate and graduate study. They provide support for tuition, fees, travel (if applicable), and oftentimes, a stipend.

Applicants must show potential for academic success by having a GPA of 3.0 or higher and earning at least a 24 composite score on their ACT.
The Rogers Scholars Program

No additional application is required. Recipients must meet admission criteria at the time of application and enroll full-time each semester beginning in the fall term after high school graduation. The $1,000 per year Rogers Scholars Scholarship can be received in addition to the Provost Scholarship. Key Considerations
- Test Scores and GPA: Eligibility for academic scholarship consideration is based on the highest ACT composite or SAT total score from one test date. Test scores and unweighted GPA may be updated through December 1 for competitive and academic scholarship consideration.
- Residency Status: A change in your residency status with the university can affect your scholarship offer.
- Full-Time Enrollment: Students receiving academic scholarships must be enrolled full-time (minimum 12 hours) at the beginning of each semester.
- Renewal Criteria: For four-year renewable academic scholarships, students are required to maintain full-time status and achieve a 3.0 cumulative GPA.
