Oregon State University Provost Scholarship: A Comprehensive Guide

For many students, the dream of higher education hinges on the availability of financial aid. Oregon State University (OSU) recognizes this and offers a variety of scholarships to support students in achieving their academic goals. Among these, the Provost Scholarship stands out as a significant opportunity for non-resident students. This article delves into the details of the Oregon State University Provost Scholarship, covering its requirements, eligibility, and related scholarship opportunities.

Understanding the Oregon State University Provost Scholarship

The Oregon State University Provost Scholarship is designed to assist non-resident students in affording tuition. The scholarship is awarded to new non-resident freshmen and transfer students based on their application for admission to the Corvallis or Bend campuses.

Eligibility Criteria for Freshmen

To be considered for the Provost Scholarship as an incoming freshman, students must:

  • Be a non-resident student.
  • Apply for admission to the Corvallis or Bend campuses.
  • Typically, have an unweighted high school GPA of 3.00 or higher.

Eligibility Criteria for Transfer Students

Transfer students seeking the Provost Scholarship must meet the following criteria:

  • Be a non-resident student.
  • Apply for admission to the Corvallis or Bend campuses.
  • Typically, have a cumulative transfer GPA of 3.00 or higher.

Priority Consideration and Application Deadlines

  • Freshmen: Priority consideration is given to freshmen students who submit their application for admission on or before February 1st.
  • Transfer Students: Priority consideration is given to transfer students who submit their application for admission on or before March 15th.

Students who apply after the priority consideration dates will still be considered, but only on a funds-available basis.

Award Value

  • Freshmen Applicants: May receive an annual value of up to $12,000.
  • Transfer Applicants: May receive an annual value of up to $5,000.

It's important to note that the Provost Scholarship cannot be combined with the Western Undergraduate Exchange (WUE) Scholarship. If a student is selected for the WUE Scholarship, they will not be eligible to also receive a Provost Scholarship.

Application Process

For the 2026-27 academic year, the majority of Oregon State University’s scholarships for newly-admitted freshmen and transfer students will be awarded automatically based on a holistic review of your application for admission. These admission-based scholarships are awarded only to students whose first term of enrollment at OSU will be Summer 2026 or Fall 2026.

OSU ScholarDollars

All new and continuing OSU students are encouraged to submit an application for additional college and departmental scholarships that are awarded through OSU ScholarDollars, Oregon State University's online scholarship search and application system. Understanding Scholarship Renewal and Maintaining Eligibility

To maintain scholarship eligibility, students must meet certain requirements. These generally include maintaining a minimum cumulative GPA and completing a minimum number of credits each year. The specific terms and conditions of OSU scholarships are sent with the initial award letter.

General Renewal Requirements

  • Students must meet the minimum cumulative GPA and annual credit completion requirements at the end of each Spring term.
  • Transfer credits and credits earned in high school (AP, IB, etc.) do not count toward the annual credit completion requirement.
  • Students are responsible for keeping track of their progress toward meeting the scholarship renewal requirements.

Degree Partnership Program (DPP) Students

  • DPP students are eligible for OSU’s WUE Scholarship as long as they register in at least 6 OSU credits, at least 12 credits total (between OSU and their partner school), and designate OSU as their home school each term. The WUE Scholarship’s tuition discount, however, can only be applied to OSU credits.
  • If DPP students do not meet all requirements in a given term, their scholarship will be cancelled, and they will lose one term of scholarship eligibility (USP scholarships are available for up to 12 terms total).

Appealing Scholarship Decisions

If students do not meet the cumulative GPA and credit completion requirements for renewal, did not meet full-time enrollment in a given term, are requesting a hold for a break in enrollment, or have to withdraw from a term for unforeseen circumstances (medical, family, etc.), they can submit a Scholarship Appeal.

Additional Financial Aid Options

Besides scholarships, students may also be eligible for other types of aid, including Federal, State, and other institutional aid. OSU also offers need-based scholarships that require students to submit the FAFSA or ORSAA before the priority deadline of February 28th.

External Scholarships

External scholarships can be a great way to increase your funding options, these can be found through your local community foundations and organizations. You can search for scholarships via internet search engines, but you will want to be careful to avoid scams.

Resources for Scholarship Information

  • OSU ScholarDollars: Oregon State University's online scholarship search and application system.
  • The Scholarship Office: Provides assistance and information regarding scholarships.
  • Internet Search Engines: Use an internet search to seek out other scholarship opportunities, by searching key words. University Scholars Program scholarships awarded based on the application for admission are renewable for up to three additional years (four years total).
  • Local Community Foundations and Organizations: Check with your local community foundations and organizations for scholarship opportunities.
  • High School Counselors: High school counselors can provide information about scholarship opportunities.

Special Circumstances and Considerations

  • Summer Term Enrollment: All undergraduate students are assessed resident tuition rates during summer term. Non-resident University Scholars Program (USP) scholarships designated specifically for non-resident tuition, such as the Provost and WUE Scholarships, cannot be applied to resident tuition. Resident USP scholarships and other USP scholarships that are not tuition rate specific may be applied to summer term as long as you are enrolled in 12 or more credits. The WUE Scholarship’s tuition discount cannot be applied to Summer term. If a non-resident student chooses to attend Summer term, they will automatically be charged resident tuition rates. Because the WUE Scholarship is a discount applied to non-resident tuition, it cannot be applied to resident tuition.
  • Ecampus Students: Ecampus students are not eligible for University Scholars Program scholarships awarded at the time of admission. However, taking online courses does not affect eligibility as long as you do not change your primary campus to Ecampus.
  • Study Abroad: Because OSU cannot verify your eligibility for renewal until your study abroad credits have been added to your OSU record, your scholarship will not be renewed until your earned credits can be verified. It is recommended to contact the OSU GO office if your scholarship renewal is delayed.
  • DPP Enrollment: Some third-party scholarships and college/departmental scholarships may have different requirements regarding DPP enrollment.
