Discovering Opportunities: A Guide to UCLA Summer Sessions Courses
UCLA Summer Sessions offer a transformative educational experience at a world-renowned university. Greatness has become the UCLA hallmark in each field, across all disciplines, and in every arena. No matter your academic goals and aspirations, UCLA has something for everyone. UCLA has a long history of providing opportunities for students from around the globe. Students can build their own unique UCLA summer experience.
Academic Opportunities
Choose from an astonishing breadth of academic opportunities that reflect UCLA’s extensive curriculum. Learn from expert instructors that represent UCLA’s academic rigor and excellence. Academic work at UCLA is measured by units of credit, which are used to evaluate the amount of time a student has devoted to a particular subject. Units of credit vary by course. Graduate courses are numbered 200-599.
Course Availability and Enrollment
Students may use the Schedule of Classes to view the availability, dates, and times of Summer Courses & Summer Intensives by selecting “Summer Sessions 2026” as the respective term. Enroll in courses on MyUCLA under the “Classes” tab and “Find a Class and Enroll”.
Some summer classes may require you to have taken specific courses or fulfilled certain requirements before enrolling. Requisites are enforced during the summer for UCLA students and MyUCLA will automatically verify you have met any mandatory requirements and may block enrollment. A transcript or proof of completion of a requisite course(s) is not required for visiting Summer Sessions students. Each online contract form is customized for a specific course number.
Students cannot enroll in multiple Summer Courses or a Summer Course(s) and Summer Institute(s) that have overlapping meeting times.

Waitlists
Students are not automatically notified when their waitlist status changes. Waitlists are maintained through Friday of the first week of the course, unless deleted earlier by the department. Students who are waitlisted for a course must also submit full payment to avoid being dropped. If the student is placed on the waitlist by the department, the student will not be prompted to make a payment unless a spot becomes available. Programs may offer a waitlist if the program is full. Students will be notified at the time of application decision that they have been placed on the waitlist, and this status can also be confirmed on the application in the registration portal.

Grading and Transcripts
The work of all students at UCLA is reported in terms of grades. Instructors are required to assign a final grade for each student enrolled in a course. In MyUCLA and the Schedule of Classes, the grade type for classes with optional grading is displayed as SO (Student Option) on the class information page. Courses with a mandatory, non-optional grading basis (e.g., Letter Grade only, P/NP or S/U only) are designated LG, PN, or SU on the class information page in MyUCLA and the Schedule of Classes.
An instructor may assign the Incomplete (I) grade when work is of passing quality but is incomplete for a good cause (such as due to illness or other serious condition). Once an I grade is assigned; it remains on the transcript along with the passing grade a student may later receive for the course. It is the student’s responsibility to discuss with the instructor the possibility of receiving an Incomplete.
A transcript is a permanent record that reflects all undergraduate and graduate work completed at UCLA. It lists courses, units, grades, cumulative grade-point average, transfer credits, total units, and work in progress in chronological order. The accomplishment of the UCLA coursework of any non-UC student enrolled in UCLA Summer Sessions is recorded on a formal UCLA transcript in the same way as a UCLA student. Current or newly admitted visiting UC students do not need to order a transcript from UCLA. Unless special services are required, ordering a transcript can be done online through MyUCLA (“Grades and Transcripts” under the “Classes” tab).
Final Examinations
The final examination is typically given during the last scheduled class meeting time. When a final examination is required, there may be no individual exemptions. Students with a documented disability who require accommodations should request accommodations as soon as possible. The University must accommodate requests for alternate examination dates for any test or examination at a time when that activity would not violate a student’s religious creed. Accommodations for alternate examination dates for religious reasons should be worked out directly and on an individual basis between the student and faculty member involved.
Housing Options
The university offers furnished residence halls and residential suites within easy walking distance of classrooms, libraries, and recreational facilities for summer students who are 17 years of age or older by move-in date. Housing is available for periods of 3, 6, 8, 9, 10, and 12 weeks. UCLA also offers furnished University Apartments near campus. To be eligible for University Apartments, you must be 18 or older by the move-in date.

Course Fees and Payment
The fee for each summer course is calculated based on the unit value the course carries and the per-unit fee rate, which varies by UC student status. In addition to the course fee, students are assessed other campus and administrative fees during the summer. Actual tuition and fees are subject to change by the University of California.

Payment of the course fees is due by the payment deadline; failure to pay by the deadline will result in being dropped from the course. Starting June 19, payment is due immediately for all sessions to avoid drops for non-payment or financial holds. *After May 1, full payment is due immediately to enroll.
Important Dates and Deadlines
Programs are filled on a rolling basis, therefore, programs can and do fill up before the stated application deadlines. Admission into a program does not mean you are enrolled. Students must officially enroll in the program and enroll in 1-2 approved courses via MyUCLA by the deadline.
Course Restrictions
Furthermore, a small number of courses may be restricted to specific populations (e.g., UCLA students only). To view whether your desired course has restrictions, visit the Schedule of Classes, search for the course, then click on the symbol underneath the "Info" section. If you are a high school student, you must be 15 years of age of older by June 26, 2023 to participate in Summer Courses, Summer Online, or Summer Intensives. Additionally, high school students may only enroll in courses on the pre-approved list unless given permission in advance from the UCLA Summer Sessions Office. Lastly, students wishing to take MATH 1 or MATH 31A must take the Math Diagnostic Exam.
Dropping Courses and Refunds
The refund deadline for Summer Courses, Summer Online, and Summer Intensives is determined by the course’s session and whether the course is impacted or non-impacted. The refund deadline and the drop deadline are not the same for most summer courses. Therefore, it is possible to drop a course and still be held liable for the full cost of the class. Additionally, courses may not be dropped once the final exam, paper, or project is attempted or submitted. After the deadlines, students may only drop a course via petition which is not guaranteed to be approved. UCLA students must submit a petition to their UCLA advising unit. Non-UCLA students must submit a petition to UCLA Summer Sessions. The registration fee is non-refundable at all times. If you plan to drop a course, the refund for unit fees depends on if your course is impacted or not.
Accessibility
The UCLA Center for Accessible Education (CAE) facilitates academic accommodations for enrolled students with documented permanent and temporary disabilities. Students with a documented disability who require accommodations should request accommodations as soon as possible.
Online Learning
Take UCLA on the go and earn UCLA credit anywhere. Summer Online is specifically designed and optimized for online course instruction and learning.
