UCLA Sports Leadership and Management Program: An Overview
The UCLA Anderson School of Management has established itself as a leading institution, particularly within the realm of media, entertainment, and sports. A key component of this is the UCLA Sports Leadership and Management Program, designed to provide students with unparalleled access to the sports industry and prepare them for leadership roles within it. This article provides an overview of the program, its curriculum, key personnel, and strategic partnerships.
A New Era in Sports Business Education
The UCLA Sports Leadership and Management Program represents a significant step forward in sports business education. Recognizing the massive, growing, and dynamic nature of the sports ecosystem, UCLA Anderson has created a program that will offer a sports leadership and management specialization for MBA students. The program also extends its reach to UCLA undergraduates, including its over 700 student-athletes, providing them with tailored courses focused on the global business of sports.
Leadership and Vision
The program is housed within UCLA Anderson’s prestigious Center for Media, Entertainment & Sports (MEMES). Professor Sanjay Sood, Faculty Director of the Center for MEMES, has developed a curriculum that delivers academic rigor and industry perspective. The program benefits from a unique blend of professor-led, practitioner-led, and co-taught courses, partnering world-class faculty and leading industry executives in the classroom.
Andy Campion (B.A. ’93, ’03) serves as the program director. Campion brings nearly 30 years of experience in the sports and entertainment industries to the role. He is currently leading Nike’s pursuit of new businesses in the broader ecosystem of sport. Before Nike, Campion spent more than 11 years at the Walt Disney Company, where he held the position of senior vice president of corporate development. He also serves on the boards of the 2028 Los Angeles Summer Olympics organizing committee (LA28), Starbucks, and the SpringHill Company.
Campion is working with Professor Sanjay Sood on the syllabus for the program’s first course, which is to be offered later this academic year.

Curriculum and Specialization
The UCLA Sports Leadership and Management Program offers a comprehensive curriculum designed to equip students with the knowledge and skills necessary to succeed in the sports industry. The program offers a sports leadership and management specialization for MBA students. To receive the specialization, students must take the two foundation classes: Entertainment Marketing and Entertainment Business Models. The curriculum includes an examination in depth of current issues in entertainment, media, and sports.
UCLA Anderson is the only top-tier MBA program to offer a specialization in Entertainment Management.
Strategic Partnerships and Industry Access
A key feature of the UCLA Sports Leadership and Management Program is its emphasis on strategic partnerships and industry access. The program collaborates closely with UCLA’s renowned athletics program and draws on the strength of Los Angeles’ sports and entertainment industries, providing students with unparalleled access to leaders across the ecosystem of sport.
UCLA’s legendary history of 121 NCAA championships and 270 Olympic medals positions UCLA Anderson to take sports business education to the next level. Its programming includes strategic partnership initiatives with organizations such as LA28 to support the Olympics. The program also partners with innovative executive education courses with Real Madrid football club. Furthermore, the program works with Los Angeles’ 14 professional sports teams and 10 professional major league teams, which have claimed 30 championships combined.
Anderson maintains strong relationships with many of the top sports organizations, resulting in MBA students accepting offers with organizations including the NBA, NFL, Nike, Wasserman, and LAFC. These relationships are maintained by the Parker Career Management Center and are supported by the resources of MEMES and the Pulse Conference.

Research and Thought Leadership
In addition to its curricular offerings, the program supports faculty research, beginning with a white paper series that addresses strategic issues in the sports industry. The UCLA Anderson Center for Media, Entertainment & Sports is a leading institution for education, thought leadership and industry access.
The Campion's Contribution
Inspired by the purpose and promise of the program, Andy Campion and his wife Shelby made a generous donation to invest in its startup. “Shelby and I have long believed that education, engagement in sport and financial opportunity are what everyone needs and deserves to live their best possible life,” said Andy Campion. “UCLA has had such a positive impact on our lives."
Summer Sessions
The UCLA Anderson Center for Media, Entertainment & Sports also offers six-week Media, Entertainment and Sports Summer Sessions in person at UCLA.
The fee for each summer course is calculated based on the unit value the course carries and the per-unit fee rate, which varies by UC student status. In addition to the course fee, students are assessed other campus and administrative fees during the summer. Actual tuition and fees are subject to change by the University of California. Summer-only visiting students, except visiting UC students, are assessed a one-time document fee during their first summer term; returning summer-only students are not subject to the document fee. The one-time document fee covers life-time academic and verification transcripts that do not require special delivery services. A nonrefundable registration fee is required to reserve space in the program. All summer courses are refundable if dropped before June 28, 2024 for Session A6 and August 9, 2024 for Session C6. Financial aid is available to all eligible UCLA students, including students admitted to UCLA for fall quarter. Eligible students from other University of California (UC) campuses may apply for financial aid at their home campus for summer study at UCLA.
Impact and Opportunities
The UCLA Sports Leadership and Management Program coursework, research and community initiatives are targeted to be offered to both graduates and undergraduates. The new program’s curricular and extracurricular programs will bring sports leaders into the classroom and engage students in the sports industry.
