UCLA Bruins Softball: Building a Dynasty

The UCLA Bruins softball team is a perennial powerhouse, consistently vying for national championships. After a deep run in the recent College World Series, the program is actively strengthening its roster through recruiting and strategic player acquisitions. The Bruins aim to secure their third national title since 2010, building upon a foundation of exceptional talent and coaching.

Bolstering the Roster: Recruiting New Talent

UCLA's recruiting efforts have been notably successful. September 1st marked the first official day that NCAA Division I softball coaches could contact current high school juniors. UCLA head coach Kelly Inouye-Perez and her staff wasted no time securing commitments from several highly-ranked players.

Promising Class of 2027 Commits

The Bruins have successfully recruited top-tier talent for the class of 2027, including:

  • Williams: Ranked No.4 overall in Softball America’s class of 2027 rankings, Williams is a powerful five-star righty. She was named the MaxPreps California Player of the Year for her outstanding season with Norco High School.
  • Jones: A strong middle infielder with a combination of speed and strength from the infield and at the plate. The four-star athlete has collected quite the accolades at Escondido Charter High School. As a freshman, she earned the Silver Slugger Award and went on to snag the Coastal League Player of the Year and the Offensive Player of the Year awards as a sophomore. “[T]he coaching staff will provide me with all the support to make me a better student, athlete, and person.”
  • Bustamante: The left-handed outfielder and slugger, assisted Athletics Mercado 16U to a PGF Premier National Championship. She’s diverse at the plate, hitting for power and average, but can slap and lay down a bunt when needed. “Ever since I was a little girl, I wanted to be a part of that Bruin Magic,” Bustamante told Brady Vernon at Softball America. “The campus, the players, and especially the coaches are absolutely amazing, and the Bruin Family is where I want to be.”
  • Johnson: The three-star versatile defender and consistent bat, tops off UCLA’s recruiting class now. She finished her sophomore season at Orange Vista High School with a .333 batting average, a .500 OPS, and a .800 fielding percentage.

These additions highlight UCLA's commitment to securing top talent across various positions, ensuring a well-rounded and competitive team for the future.

Securing Pitching Depth

Inouye-Perez also secured pitcher and outfielder Natalie Cable in UCLA’s 2025 signing class.

The acquisition of Williams is particularly significant, given the importance of pitching in softball. Furthermore, southpaws also cancel out the advantage that left-handed batters bring to a lineup, since these pitchers have leverage on the outside part of the zone.

Roster Adjustments: Transfers and Departures

While the Bruins are actively recruiting new players, the team has also experienced some roster changes.

  • Addisen Fisher: Rising junior two-way player Kaitlyn Terry entered the portal June 4, and pitcher Addisen Fisher announced her departure from UCLA on June 6. Fisher joined the roster as the No. 1 recruit in the 2024 class. Fisher winds a pitch up from the circle. She was the highest-ranked player in the 2024 recruiting class.
  • Kaitlyn Terry: Rising junior two-way player Kaitlyn Terry entered the portal June 4, and pitcher Addisen Fisher announced her departure from UCLA on June 6. Former two-way player Terry initiates her delivery.
  • Bahl: Bahl - who transferred from Oklahoma to Nebraska after capturing two straight national championships - tore her ACL in the first game of the 2024 season.

These departures create opportunities for other players to step up and contribute.

Key Players and Achievements

Despite roster adjustments, the Bruins boast a talented roster with several key players.

  • Taylor Tinsley: Rising senior Taylor Tinsley delivers a pitch. The Lawrenceville, Georgia, local recorded 15 wins with the Bruins last season.
  • Megan Grant: UCLA softball star Megan Grant is going to the hardwood, and her future teammates can't get enough of it. Megan Grant is a two-time softball All-American and is taking her talents to the hardwood. Megan Grant earned national and conference honors for the second straight week after leading UCLA to a sweep with five home runs and a .667 batting average. Megan Grant crushed her NCAA-leading 21st home run to fuel UCLA’s series-clinching win over Washington and extend the Bruins’ red-hot streak. Megan Grant’s historic power surge and Addisen Fisher’s undefeated rise have UCLA softball surging into the postseason picture with confidence and momentum.
  • Jada Cecil: UCLA Bruins senior pitcher Jada Cecil hurled her first career no-hitter in Tuesday's blowout win over Long Beach State in Westwood.
  • Gabriela Jaquez: UCLA Bruins' two-sport star athlete Gabriela Jaquez recently wrapped up her junior season with the women's basketball team and announced that she has joined the Bruins' softball team halfway through the year.

Four UCLA Bruins softball players were named NFCA All-Americans after a stellar 2025 season and NCAA Softball World Series appearance.
