Understanding UCLA Proof of Enrollment Requirements
For students attending the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), providing proof of enrollment is a common requirement for various purposes, including student loan deferment, scholarship eligibility, and other forms of verification. UCLA offers several ways for students to obtain this proof, both online and through official documents. This article provides a comprehensive overview of UCLA's proof of enrollment requirements, the types of verifications available, and the processes for obtaining them.
What is Proof of Enrollment?
Proof of enrollment certifies registration (fee payment and enrollment status) and degrees earned to verify UCLA attendance. This verification is essential for various administrative processes and can be accessed online through MyUCLA.
Key Components of a Proof of Enrollment Letter
The proof of enrollment letter includes valuable information. The proof of enrollment letter does not display courses or grades, but does include:
- Month and day of birth
- Date(s) of admission
- Terms and dates of attendance
- Enrollment status for each term attended
- Class level and career
- College or school attended
- Major(s)
- Degree-expected term
- UCLA degree(s) awarded and date(s) of award
- Registrar’s seal and signature
How to Obtain Proof of Enrollment
Students who need official verification of their UCLA enrollment can obtain a proof of enrollment letter through MyUCLA (classes tab). This online service provides immediate access to enrollment verification.
Types of Enrollment Status
Enrollment status at UCLA is categorized based on the number of units a student is taking. A study list of 12 or more units for registered undergraduate students, or 8 or more units for registered graduate students, is considered full-time status for enrollment reporting, insurance, intercollegiate athletics, university housing, and financial aid purposes. Verification of student workload is based on actual enrolled units and does not consider wait-listed units.

Specific Verification Scenarios
UCLA provides different types of verification letters to accommodate various student needs.
Student Loan Verification
The proof of enrollment letter is an acceptable document for student loan deferment. UCLA has authorized National Student Clearinghouse to supply student enrollment verification for all third-party requests. The Clearinghouse also reports student enrollment verification to the National Student Loan Data System (NSLDS).
New Incoming Student Scholarship
New students who require proof of enrollment to receive a scholarship may obtain a letter confirming admission to the University and intent to register for the term of admission by using a new student verification request. Or, students may wait until fees are paid to request proof of enrollment. Use the DMV letter request.
Internship Course Credit (195CE)
Students may obtain a letter that verifies academic credit is being received for a 195CE internship course by using the internship letter request. Students must be enrolled in the 195CE class before submitting this request.
Classes Dropped for Nonpayment
After the term registration fees payment deadline, classes are automatically dropped if fees have not been paid in full. Nonpayment drop dates are published on the term calendar. For verification that classes were dropped for nonpayment on a scheduled drop date, students can obtain an official classes dropped for nonpayment letter. This letter does not guarantee re-enrollment.

Other Types of Verifications
UCLA offers several other types of verifications to cater to different needs.
Degree Verification
For graduating students, verification of a degree can be issued after the degree has been posted to the student’s record, approximately six weeks after the end of the term. If earlier proof of degree is required, students can request a degree completion letter; they should also contact a degree auditor. There is no fee for this letter, but a special degree processing fee may apply if special action must be taken. See Final Transcript for details.
A final academic transcript that includes the graduation date is available about six weeks after the end of the final term. As a substitute for a final transcript, a degree award letter can be issued. There is no fee for this letter. A letter may not be released if the student has outstanding financial obligations to the University. The student should check their record for outstanding holds through MyUCLA.
English Language Verification
The downloadable English language verification (PDF) confirms that courses at UCLA are taught in the English language, unless otherwise noted (e.g., foreign language courses). It also refers to the official UCLA policy as published in the UCLA General Catalog Academic Policies section.
Notarization
The UCLA Registrar’s Office notarizes only those documents it issues: diplomas, official transcripts, and proofs of enrollment. See Notary Services.

Special Verification
A student who needs a verification letter for anything not covered herein should submit a special letter request. This form should NOT be used for any documents or services that are already available through MyUCLA or for which a specific form already exists. When describing the special request, the student should be as specific as possible. If the request can be satisfied, a special handling fee is charged to the student BruinBill account. Allow three business days for processing. Online requests are preferred. However, students who cannot access the online special letter request may submit a PDF/paper request instead.
Fees and Payment
Proof of enrollment is available at no charge through MyUCLA. Most other documentation is also available to students at no charge. Fees for services, expedited delivery, and special handling are selected and acknowledged on each form. See also the complete list of transcript-related fees. Fees are subject to change at any time. Online orders require an American Express, Discover, MasterCard, or VISA credit card. In-person orders by current students are billed to the BruinBill account.

Additional Information for Medical Students (DGSOM)
The David Geffen School of Medicine (DGSOM) has specific policies regarding enrollment and verification.
Full-Time Student Status & Enrollment Policy
Medical student enrollment status is always classified as full-time; the School of Medicine does not offer part-time status. Term fees (semester or summer session) are flat amounts assessed to all full-time students based on enrollment status (undergraduate, graduate, professional) and program, not on enrolled units. Costs for housing, books, materials, etc. are not included. Enrollment is contingent upon payment of registration fees; courses may not be attended without the payment of registration fees.
Minimum Enrollment Required for the 4-Year MD Program
Students in the HEALS curriculum must be enrolled in a minimum of 8 semesters (typically 4 fall and 4 spring semesters) and 3 summer terms (at the beginning of Years 2, 3 and 4).
Name Changes
Name changes require two forms and are processed for current students only. Please complete both DGSOM and UCLA Name Change Forms. A student's lived name can appear on many records. A student's legal name is retained for some uses. To submit a lived name request please complete this form. Note: All former names are retained in student records. All current and former student names are included on the academic transcript.
Registration in the Final Term
If students are completing courses; using faculty time, library facilities, laboratories, or other University resources; or receiving University funds, they are required to register in the final term in which they expect to receive their degree.
Transfer Students and Withdrawal
The David Geffen School of Medicine (DGSOM) does not accept transfer students. The form below can be utilized to request to withdraw from the MD Program at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA.
Continuous Registration Policy
Students must be either registered and enrolled or on an official leave of absence every term until their degrees are awarded.
Accessing Enrollment/Degree Verification
To access your enrollment verification letters and unofficial transcripts, please access the Student Document Portal.
UCLA Extension Transcripts and Enrollment Confirmation
UCLA Extension also provides transcripts and enrollment confirmation.
Transcripts
A transcript is a record of all of the courses you completed, grades you earned, and programs you completed at UCLA Extension. We offer both official and unofficial transcripts.
Official Transcripts: Official transcripts are typically required for admission to other colleges and universities, and occasionally required for job applications. Your official transcript from UCLA Extension will be produced on transcript paper including registrar signature, date, and university seal. It is delivered in a sealed envelope. We have partnered with Parchment to deliver official transcripts where you have the option of ordering a digital or paper copy. Use your UCLA Extension student portal login information to preview your official transcript, see cost and delivery options, and to place your order.
Unofficial Transcripts: Unofficial transcripts are typically used as an academic advising tool or for general business purposes. These cannot be used as an official transcript. Unofficial transcripts are downloaded as a PDF. Note: Courses that are in progress can appear on transcripts with a grade of “IP” (course in progress/grade pending) upon request.
Enrollment Confirmation
UCLA Extension routinely reports enrollment data to the National Student Clearinghouse so that education loan lenders can confirm enrollment. If you have provided your social security number (SSN) during enrollment, a loan deferment form is not required. Contact your lender for more information.
