UCLA: A Global Forum and Centennial Celebrations

The University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) has a global mission, and the UCLA Global Forum initiative builds on this. It offers UCLA alumni, students, parents, and friends worldwide opportunities to network, receive campus updates, and learn about compelling issues of global and local relevance. Each event in the ongoing series provides a platform where participants can discuss salient topics relating to education, health, the environment, technology, entrepreneurship, and other societal issues.

UCLA Global Forum Initiative

The UCLA Global Forum initiative serves as a vital link connecting Bruins across the globe. By offering networking opportunities, campus updates, and discussions on important global and local issues, the initiative strengthens the UCLA community and extends its impact beyond the campus.

The Global Forum series provides a platform for participants to engage in discussions on salient topics. These topics include education, health, the environment, technology, entrepreneurship, and other societal issues. The breadth of these topics ensures that the Global Forum remains relevant and engaging for a diverse audience.

Centennial Celebrations Around the World

UCLA celebrated its first hundred years with a series of international events. These celebrations, hosted by Chancellor Gene Block and the UCLA International Centennial delegation, took place in cities around the world, bringing together Bruins to commemorate this milestone.

London

On Saturday, February 1, 2020, Chancellor Gene Block and the UCLA International Centennial delegation hosted a celebration of UCLA's first hundred years in London. Bruins who share the pride of UCLA experience had the opportunity to mingle. Thought-provoking student and alumni stories were told on PechaKucha style that honors UCLA founding year. Attendees met Nurit Katz, UCLA's first Chief Sustainability Officer. Ms. Katz shared insights on sustainability initiatives at UCLA and beyond.

Shanghai

On Wednesday, October 9, 2019, Chancellor Gene Block and the UCLA International Centennial delegation hosted a celebration of UCLA's first hundred years in Shanghai. UCLA student Evelyn Wang, Class of 2021; Cindy Fan, UCLA's senior international officer and responsible for the university's global strategy, international partnerships and global engagement; and UCLA alumnus Tony Hao-Dong ZhangI, Mechanical Engineering '90, shared thought-provoking stories of his success as an entrepreneur with start-up companies in media, entertainment, IT and health care business focusing on dermatology aesthetic and women's health. Their experiences highlighted the diverse paths that UCLA graduates take and the impact they have on the world.

Taipei

On Tuesday, October 8, 2019, Chancellor Gene Block and the UCLA International Centennial delegation hosted a celebration of UCLA's first hundred years in Taipei. UCLA student Ellen Liang-Yi Tsai, Psychobiology Major; Dr. Jonathan Flint, UCLA professor-in-residence of psychiatry and biobehavioral sciences; and UCLA alumnus Shirley Wang, shared thought-provoking stories from being a founder, chief executive officer, entrepreneur to philanthropist. Their stories emphasized the entrepreneurial spirit and commitment to service that are hallmarks of the UCLA community.

Seoul

On Monday, October 7, 2019, Chancellor Gene Block and the UCLA International Centennial delegation hosted a celebration of UCLA's first hundred years in Seoul. UCLA student Ellie Shim shared her experiences as a Bruin.
