UCLA Health provides a wide array of immediate care services designed to offer accessible and convenient healthcare solutions. Whether you're a UCLA student seeking prompt medical attention or a community member in need of urgent care, UCLA Health has options to meet your needs. This article outlines the various immediate care services available, including in-person clinics, virtual care options, and after-hours resources.

Accessing Care at The Ashe Center for UCLA Students

For UCLA students, The Ashe Center is the primary resource for healthcare needs. The fastest way to schedule an appointment at The Ashe Center is by logging into MyStudentChart anytime to book an appointment time that works for you. If you are unable to find an appointment online, please call The Ashe Center Appointment Line at (310) 825-4073 (Option 1) during business hours for additional appointment availability.

After-Hours and Alternative Care Options for Students

If The Ashe Center is closed or there is not an appointment available as soon as you need it, you still have access to care -- both online, and in the local community using your UCSHIP benefits. Several options are available:

  • 24/7 AfterHours NurseLine (310-825-4073): All currently registered UCLA students have access to advice & information from a registered nurse through the AfterHours NurseLine at (310) 825-4073.
  • Mental Health Concerns (310-825-0768): For mental health-related concerns when the Counseling & Psychological Services (CAPS) is closed, you may speak with a CAPS Crisis Clinician by calling (310) 825-0768.
  • LiveHealth Online Telemedicine (24/7/365): Online video appointments (telemedicine) with an Anthem network provider when The Ashe Center is closed. LiveHealth Online appointments are $0 for UCSHIP students. Board-certified doctors are available 24/7/365 via phone or online video consults for urgent, non-Emergency medical assistance, including the ability to write prescriptions. LiveHealth Online provides behavioral health services as well. If follow up care is required after a consult, the student must obtain a referral from the Ashe Center prior to seeking care outside of the Ashe Center. To access LiveHealth Online telehealth, download the AfterHours & Urgent Care Flier.

UCLA Health Immediate Care Clinics

UCLA Health Primary Care Clinics that offer walk-in appointments are called Immediate Cares. UCLA Health offers walk-in immediate care services at 12 locations throughout the greater Los Angeles region. Students can access local UCLA Health Immediate Cares to address their urgent medical concerns with a UCLA Health Physician when same-day appointments have filled at The Ashe Center.

Important Considerations for Students Using UCLA Health Immediate Care

UCLA Health Immediate Care visits are subject to applicable copays and coinsurances for services rendered. Students must provide a copy of their After Visit Summary (AVS) to the Insurance Services Office at The Ashe Center through MyStudentChart (Messages > Insurance Question) within seven (7) days of their visit to ensure coverage through UCSHIP. If the UCLA Health Physician makes any follow up treatment recommendations (e.g. MRI, Ultrasound, Specialist Visit, etc.), students must consult with their Ashe Primary Care Provider to discuss the recommendation(s) prior to seeking services. A valid Ashe Center Referral is required for all non-emergent Specialty Care Services outside of The Ashe Center.

Emergency Care

Ronald Reagan Emergency Department at UCLA Health

The Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center Emergency Department (ED) is a comprehensive emergency facility staffed to provide 24-hour response to the emergency care needs of the community. The address is 757 Westwood Plaza Los Angeles, CA 90095. The UCLA Emergency Room can be reached directly at (310) 825-2111.

What to Expect in the Emergency Department

Immediately upon arrival you will check-in at the registration counter. Once registration is complete, you will first see a nurse who will conduct an initial evaluation known as triage. This means that each patient is evaluated to determine the level of medical emergency. This allows us to keep every patient’s wait time as short as possible, as well as provide prompt appropriate care to all patients. After triage is complete, you will be brought to a patient room or asked to take a seat in the waiting room until a room is ready. If your condition changes while you are in the waiting room, please notify the triage nurse immediately.

Emergency Room Costs

Emergency room visits at participating Anthem in-network facilities have a co-payment of $175. If you are admitted, this co-payment will be waived and you will be charged the hospitalization co-insurance rate. Please visit the Plan Highlights for additional breakdown of these fees.

Emergency Room vs. Urgent Care

A trip to the emergency Room can be costly and time-consuming. Unless you have a life-threatening condition, it is best to go to an Urgent Care center near you. Remember that you and your insurance company will be responsible for the total cost of any care you receive outside of The Ashe Center. It is important to carry your UCSHIP Anthem Blue Cross insurance card with you.

Virtual Care Options

Virtual care allows you to connect with a UCLA Health provider remotely instead of going to the provider’s office.

Types of Virtual Care

  • Video visits: This is when you meet with a provider over the internet using a video camera and a computer, smartphone or tablet.
  • E-visits: You send information to your provider electronically, usually in the form of a questionnaire, then the provider reviews it and sends you a treatment plan or medical advice.

Virtual care is ideal for the times when you’re feeling sick, you have a minor injury, or you need a follow-up appointment with your provider. UCLA Health has primary care physicians, specialist physicians, physician assistants (PAs) and nurse practitioners (NPs) available to meet with you virtually. Virtual care is not for serious or life-threatening health issues. Many of our UCLA Health primary and specialty care providers are available for virtual care appointments. Please note that some appointments might require an in-person visit. To schedule a virtual care visit, choose one of the options in the boxes above. What you need can vary depending on the type of virtual care you choose. Please note that many "face-to-face" services can be provided via video technology. However, preventive services appointments, such as well child checks and annual exams, cannot be billed via telehealth. Yes, UCLA Health uses a HIPAA-compliant method for conducting virtual care, including video visits. If you're having any issues with your video visit, turn your computer, smartphone or tablet completely off and back on again.

eConsults

Your primary care provider (PCP) and specialists often work together to provide the best care. An eConsult is like a special form of communication between your PCP and a specialist at UCLA Health. The eConsult is for minor issues a specialist can help with, without needing to see you face-to-face.

Remote Patient Monitoring

Through electronic tools including blood pressure or heart rate monitors, scales, EKG monitors and others, providers monitor a patient’s health remotely.

Immediate Care Video Visits

Want to connect even faster? Meet with a physician on an immediate care video visit. Join a virtual queue to see the first available physician in a secure call. If you need help managing symptoms from a chronic condition such as hypertension, diabetes, kidney disease or others, schedule an appointment with your PCP. Immediate care is not a substitute for seeing your primary care physician (PCP). Always check to see if your primary care office has an appointment available before using immediate care. You can schedule a visit with your primary care physician through myUCLAhealth or check their availability and schedule an appointment by calling your primary care office. If your primary care physician is not available, a member of their team can help.

Note: Walk-ins welcome. Last walk-in patient accepted 30 minutes prior to close. If walk-in service reaches capacity, we will schedule an appointment with your PCP or an Immediate Care Video Visit. There may be times when the care you need falls outside the realm of services offered at the immediate care clinic near you or when our patient volume reaches capacity.

How Immediate Care Video Visits Work

You don’t need an appointment. Simply log in to myUCLAhealth and you'll be connected with the next available physician who will join you through a secure video call. Immediate care video visits are available Monday - Friday from 8:30 am to 8:30 pm, and Saturdays, Sundays and holidays from 9:30 am to 6:30 pm.

Once you’re connected, a physician will:

  • Take the time to discuss your symptoms
  • Decide on a treatment plan
  • Answer any questions you may have
  • Arrange follow-up visits if you need them

This option is ideal when you have minor medical concerns such as a rash, flu symptoms or signs of a respiratory infection. Before you start your video visit, you will be notified what your copay is so that you can pay before joining the call.

Important Reminders

If you have a serious condition including stroke, heart attack, severe bleeding, head injury or other major trauma, call 911. Please have your medical information readily available, including a list of medications that you are currently taking. This information will help the doctor evaluate your health status.
