Navigating Financial Aid at UCLA Extension: A Comprehensive Guide

Embarking on a journey of higher education at UCLA Extension is an exciting prospect, and understanding how to finance this endeavor is a crucial first step. This guide aims to provide a thorough overview of the financial aid information available to UCLA Extension students, covering federal and state aid, institutional scholarships and grants, private loans, and work-study opportunities. We will delve into the application processes, disbursement schedules, and important deadlines to ensure you are well-equipped to manage your educational expenses.

Understanding the Financial Aid Landscape

UCLA is committed to helping students finance their education, recognizing that paying for your education should be a partnership between the student, your family, the government, and UCLA. Financial aid at UCLA Extension encompasses a variety of avenues designed to support students from diverse backgrounds and with varying financial needs. These include scholarships, grants, loans, and part-time employment opportunities.

When you are admitted to UCLA, you and your family might have a lot of questions about how you’ll cover the costs of tuition, housing, and other necessities. UCLA is dedicated to helping each family create a strategy that works for them. After you’re admitted to UCLA, Financial Aid and Scholarships will provide you with a Provisional Award Letter (PAL). This letter will inform you of your eligibility for grants, scholarships, loans, and work programs. Your PAL is expected to be available at the end of April or early May due to FAFSA delays. When you’re admitted, you’re asked to submit a Statement of Intent to Register (SIR). Once you submit it, your award will be finalized. Yes, your financial aid notification will offer assistance to cover your total Cost of Attendance.

Applying for Financial Aid: Key Steps and Deadlines

The first step for most students seeking financial assistance is to complete the appropriate application. Domestic citizens and eligible noncitizen prospects should plan to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). For undocumented California residents, the California Dream Act Application (CADAA) is the required form. It is imperative to complete the 2026-2027 aid application before the deadline of March 2, 2026. Students are encouraged to complete their aid application early using UCLA’s school code, which is 001315. For more detailed information, please visit the "Apply for Aid" webpage.

Federal Financial Aid Updates and Legislative Changes

Significant changes are on the horizon for federal financial aid. On July 4, 2025, the H.R.1 bill, also known as the "One Big Beautiful Bill Act," was enacted into law. Key provisions regarding Federal Loan limits that will affect college students are scheduled to take effect on July 1, 2026. A legacy provision is included for current borrowers, allowing them to borrow under current limits for the remainder of their program of study. Students and families are strongly encouraged to review the "2026-2027 Federal Financial Aid Updates" webpage for more information and guidance on how to best prepare for these upcoming changes.

Grants: Non-Repayable Financial Aid

Grants are a crucial form of financial aid that recipients do not have to repay. These funds can originate from federal and state governments, as well as from UCLA itself. Most grants are awarded based on demonstrated financial need and require the submission of the FAFSA or CA Dream Act application by the priority deadline. Students are encouraged to explore the grant programs available at UCLA.

Loans: Understanding Your Borrowing Options

For many students, loans are a necessary component of financing their education. UCLA Extension offers various loan options, including federal and private loans.

Federal Student Loans: These loans are not credit-based and have terms set by the Department of Education. Interest paid on student loans is tax-deductible, and there are flexible payment options. Repayment can be delayed until after graduation for both federal and private loans.

Parent Loans: Parents have the option to take out a low-interest educational loan from the government or a private loan from a bank or other private lenders. The terms for federal parent loans are determined by the Department of Education. While federal parent loans are not based on credit scores, adverse credit can impact eligibility. Loan payments can be postponed until after the student graduates, and interest paid on parent loans is tax-deductible. Students and parents are encouraged to research their borrowing options carefully.

Private Alternative Education Loans: These are continuing education loans made available by banks and private lending institutions, not by the federal government.

Important Note on Loan Disbursement: Private loans are equally disbursed over the enrollment quarters of the current school year. Disbursements are made via BruinDirect on a specific loan disbursement schedule. You can expect to see loan proceeds once your enrollment of a minimum of six (6) units is verified. If you selected a lender who does not participate in the electronic process, your paper check(s) will be sent to UCLA Student Loan Services. You will be required to pick up your private loan check in person at the Strathmore Building, Room 106 on the UCLA campus. Checks are disbursed 3-5 days before the quarter starts and must be picked up within three weeks of the beginning of the quarter to avoid cancellation. To receive your private loan check(s), you must have already paid for classes at UCLA Extension, presenting registration receipts showing "PAID" for a minimum of six (6) units. Note that courses must be taken for a letter grade.

Loan Disbursement Schedule (2025-2026):

  • Summer 2025: Loan Period: 06/23/25 - 09/14/25. Disbursement Date: 06/16/25.
  • Fall 2025: Loan Period: 09/22/25 - 12/15/25. Disbursement Date: 09/15/25.
  • Winter 2026: Loan Period: 01/05/26 - 03/22/26. Disbursement Date: 01/02/26.
  • Spring 2026: Loan Period: 03/30/26 - 06/13/26. Disbursement Date: 03/24/26.

Note: Loans will only disburse after students have already paid for classes at UCLA Extension (at least 6 units per quarter). Courses must be taken for a letter grade.

Work-Study Programs: Earning While Learning

Part-time student jobs can significantly help in paying for textbooks and day-to-day living expenses. Each year, a substantial number of UCLA undergraduates work on campus part-time. The 2025-2026 Work Study hiring deadline has been extended to Tuesday, March 31, 2026. Students are encouraged to review the "Work Study Program Calendar" for important dates and the "Work Study" webpage for more information.

Special Student Populations and Resources

Students are encouraged to review the "Special Student Populations Updates" webpage for important information that may be relevant to them. This can include information tailored to veterans, international students, and other specific demographic groups.

Navigating the New Financial Aid System

UCLA Extension is currently implementing a new University-wide financial aid system, known as Bruin Financial Aid. As this transition continues, students may experience delays in the processing of financial aid applications and disbursements. The UCLA Extension team is working diligently to assist affected students as quickly as possible. If you have submitted a question or are awaiting an update, please be assured that all cases are being actively reviewed.

Understanding Disbursement and Refunds

It is important to distinguish between disbursement and refund. Disbursement refers to the payment of federal or private student aid funds to the student by the school, representing the accepted financial aid sent to your BruinBill. A Refund is any amount of leftover aid after all BruinBill payments are due.

Utilizing BruinDirect and BruinBill

BruinDirect is UCLA's electronic deposit system for financial aid refunds, offering a fast and secure method to deposit funds directly into your personal bank account. BruinDirect can be used for checking accounts at any bank or credit union in the United States.

To sign up for BruinDirect:

  • If you already have a MyUCLA account: Log into MyUCLA, click on the "Finance and Jobs" tab, then click on "BruinBill," and finally, sign up for BruinDirect.
  • If you do not have a MyUCLA account: Follow the instructions to set one up. You will need to obtain your UID (university identification number).

What is MyUCLA? MyUCLA is the central hub for all online UCLA student resources. What is BruinBill? BruinBill is the UCLA campus billing platform where you can manage and view your loan disbursement and refund transaction history. Access BruinBill by logging into your MyUCLA account.

Other Financial Considerations

UC Excelerator: UCLA and UC Berkeley Extensions have launched the UC Excelerator, a tuition-free program offering academic credit, career-focused coursework, and professional networking to expand university access for those who may not have previously considered continuing their education.

Sponsored Awards and Scholarships: UCLA Extension accepts funds from organizations that sponsor awards and/or scholarships to help students cover tuition costs. To process these, a letter to UCLA Extension Financial Aid & Scholarships, P.O. Box 24901, Los Angeles, CA 90024-0901, should include the recipient's name, address, and telephone number; the award enrollment period; and the name and contact information for the organization representative. All checks/funds received from sponsors are processed as gift payments and immediately deposited into the receiving student’s account for unrestricted use. Any unused balances will be refunded to the student. UCLA Extension is not responsible for ensuring the receiving student uses the funds as intended by the sponsor; this responsibility rests solely with the student. The receiving student is also responsible for reporting satisfactory academic progress to their sponsor organization, if required.

Savings Accounts and Tax Benefits: Families can set up special college savings accounts, such as Coverdell Education Savings Accounts and 529 plans, to save for college tuition and related expenses. Withdrawals from 401(k) or 403(b) retirement savings accounts are penalty-free when used for education. The government also offers tax benefits and credits for higher education.

Accelerating Degree Completion: To reduce the time involved in earning a degree, students can consider taking more than the minimum courses required per term and/or attending summer school.

Cost of Attendance: Your financial aid notification will offer assistance to cover your total Cost of Attendance. You must be a California resident to be assessed in-state tuition. UCLA Financial Aid and Scholarships will adjust your financial aid award to incorporate your scholarships. Typically, scholarships are used to replace federal work-study and/or need-based student loans.

Income Appeals: If your or your parent/guardian’s financial situation changes after applying or at any time during the academic year, you may submit a projected year income appeal along with supporting documentation.

Negotiating Awards: Unfortunately, UCLA isn’t able to negotiate financial aid awards in response to offers from other universities.

Study Abroad Financial Aid

Considering studying abroad in the 26/27 Academic Year? The International Education Office and UCLA Financial Aid & Scholarships will be hosting a Q&A session to ensure all your questions are answered. Please complete the provided RSVP form to receive the Zoom details.
