What is Reiki?

The Origins of Reiki
The specific practice of Reiki was developed in the late 1800s by Dr. Mikao Usui, a Japanese doctor and former Buddhist monk. Through 21 days of meditation, he discovered the ability to heal through gentle or near touch. Dr. Chujiro Hayashi, one of Usui’s pupils, further developed the practice, including many of the hand positions used today.
Experiencing a Reiki Session
A typical Reiki session provides an hour of meditative relaxation. The recipient simply closes their eyes and surrenders to the experience, sometimes even falling asleep. The practitioner may play calming music while working with the recipient's energy, sometimes focusing on the chakras to ensure a smooth energy flow, potentially using a crystal pendulum to check for movement.
During the session, the recipient may feel warmth, tingling, or even aches as energy releases. Reiki can also be performed long distance, with the practitioner sending healing energy over the phone. The way one receives the energy is unique to each individual and can be discussed with the practitioner after the session to verify any sensations felt.

Learning Reiki: A Step-by-Step Guide
Anyone can learn and practice Reiki. Classes are widely available at massage clinics, yoga studios, and through online searches.
Levels of Training
There are typically four levels of training to complete before becoming a Reiki Master.
- Level 1: Introduces the history of Reiki, basic hand positions, and how to feel energy.
- Level 2: Focuses on learning Reiki symbols, including the one for distance practice.
- Level 3 & Master: Requires a deep commitment to the practice, continual utilization of Reiki healing abilities, meditation, and careful selection of a master to learn from.
The Attunement Process
At the end of each class, students receive an "attunement" from their teacher. This process is said to open the crown, heart, and palm chakras and creates a unique connection between the student and the teacher. The teacher performs Reiki over the student, almost like an energy transfer, to help "unlock" and further their own energy. William Rand, founder of the International Center for Reiki Training, suggests that while it might be possible to charge one's own Reiki energy, an attunement significantly speeds up the process.
Finding a Reiki Master Teacher
The internet is an excellent resource for finding certified Reiki practitioners and learning about others' experiences with different training programs. The ability to learn Reiki is not dependent on intellectual capacity, nor does one have to be able to meditate. It does not take years of practice. It is simply passed on from the teacher to the student. As soon as this happens, one has and can do Reiki. Reiki is a pure form of healing not dependent on individual talent or acquired ability. Because of this, the personality of the healer is less likely to cloud the significance of the experience. Reiki is not taught in the way other healing techniques are taught. It is transferred to the student by the Reiki Master during an attunement process. The Reiki attunement is a powerful spiritual experience. The attunement energies are channeled into the student through the Reiki Master. The process is guided by the Rei or God-consciousness and makes adjustments in the process depending on the needs of each student. The attunement is also attended by Reiki guides and other spiritual beings who help implement the process. The attunement can also increase psychic sensitivity. Once you have received a Reiki attunement, you will have Reiki for the remainder of your life. It does not wear off and you can never lose it. While one attunement is all you need for each level to be attuned to that level, additional attunements bring benefit. Experimentation has found that additional attunements of the same level add to the value of that level. These benefits include refinement of the Reiki energy one is channeling, increased strength of the energy, healing of personal problems, clarity of mind, increased psychic sensitivity, and a raised level of consciousness.

Preparing for an Attunement
In order to improve the results you receive during the attunement, a process of purification is recommended. This will allow the attunement energies to work more efficiently and create greater benefits for you. The following steps are optional. Refrain from eating meat, fowl or fish for three days prior to the attunement. Minimize your use of coffee and caffeine drinks or stop completely. They create imbalances in the nervous and endocrine systems. Minimize or stop using sweets. Release all anger, fear, jealousy, hate, worry, etc. up to the light.

The secret of doing effective Reiki for self-healing is to do a full Reiki treatment (all of the hand positions, on a consistent basis, over a period of time, e.g. one hour daily), and not just treat the symptom areas, e.g., the painful shoulder or the nagging headache. Note: Please remember that Reiki is not a substitute for receiving medical treatment when you need it. If you have a medical condition, always follow your doctor’s advice. Ask your doctor if doing Reiki for yourself is right for you.
Hawayo Takata, the Japanese-American woman who brought Reiki to the West said, “Anytime that a condition is present for three weeks or longer, the condition becomes chronic. By then, the whole body is involved in the healing process. Reiki works as a system (of Reiki hand positions).

Reiki Hand Positions
- Position 2.
- Position 3. This position addresses the upper areas of the lungs, the upper heart area, and the thymus gland, (which is the first gland of the immune system that reacts to stress). The thymus gland drops to 50% of its function when one is under stress.
- Position 4.
- In position 7 you are treating the rest of the small intestines, the ascending colon, the descending colon, sigmoid and rectum. You are also treating the female reproductive system, i.e., uterus, ovaries and fallopian tubes. The urinary bladder and the male prostate gland are also receiving energy in this position.
This Reiki self-treatment protocol is exactly the same as the one Hawayo Takata taught in her classes. A condition could be of a physical, emotional, mental or spiritual nature. There is no dichotomy in Reiki. Reiki treats the whole person (or animal) at all levels. For example, if you are treating a condition of a mental or emotional nature, and the condition has been there three weeks or longer, you must give Reiki to the whole body, and not just the head. All of the muscles in the body have the ability to store emotional memories. Don’t just give Reiki to the symptom area.
How Reiki Works
As the Reiki energy flows out your hands and into the cells of the body underneath your hands, the cells recognize the life-giving energy and draw on it. Much like a weak battery, depleted cells require more time and energy to recharge. Cells control the degree of energy draw. The more depleted they are, the stronger the flow.
Keeping Reiki Simple
When giving Reiki to the self or others, there is no need for special preparation or mental concentration on the part of the practitioner. Takata called it “automatic concentration.” Automatic concentration and not utilizing your own energy reserves are two of the features that make Reiki different from other energy healing systems. There is no need to surround yourself with white light, smudge the room, or create a protection prior to starting the Reiki session. The Reiki energy you are delivering during the session will provide the necessary protection.
A Reiki Self-Healing Routine
The Rev. John Harvey Gray, the longest practicing Reiki Master in the West practiced the following Reiki self-healing routine for many years. “At night I do my head and my neck, my eyes, the side of my head that has to do with hearing and my throat. If I have had a particularly emotional day or if I wake up and can’t go back to sleep, I place my hands behind my head. I usually do that at night. Then I do my torso in the morning. If I’ve had a big meal, I do my abdomen to help digest it. When I get a sore throat, which happens infrequently, I’ll do five or six hours on my sinuses, throat and chest. Occasionally I treat my liver. I treat any position as little or as much as I want to, since I know where my health challenges are. Reiki for self healing is an effective stress-reduction method. I am a much more peaceful person now than when I was in the business world. I am much healthier than I would have been if I had not learned and practiced Reiki.

Reiki is easily learned and practiced as self-care by anyone who is interested, regardless of age or health. No special background or credentials are needed for training. One of the hallmarks of Reiki practice is its simplicity: it can be learned in about ten hours of in-person training, generally offered in group class formats, and doesn't require knowledge of either subtle bioenergy or healthcare.
Reiki for Stress Reduction and Relaxation
Often, people become deeply relaxed while doing Reiki for self healing and they often doze off, which is fine. Enjoy the nap. You can do Reiki when you are asleep, when watching TV, while driving or even while sitting in a reception area waiting for the dentist or a business appointment.
Personal Reiki Self-Healing Treatment
While lying on my back in bed or on a couch, I place my hands over my eyes and forehead. If my arms get tired, I put a pillow under my elbows. I stay three to five minutes in each position. Then I do the sides and back of my head. I work my way down the front of the body from the throat to the bottom of the torso, covering the neck, breasts, heart, lungs, diaphragm, digestive system, intestines, female reproductive system and bladder. I also treat my adrenal glands, kidneys, ureters, sacrum and coccyx by reaching around the back for a more direct effect. If you cannot reach your back, treat from the front of the torso and stay longer to allow the energy to penetrate. I finish with the back of my knees and the soles of my feet. The Insomnia Point, an extra point known in Japanese acupuncture, is located in the center of the heel. Treat the back of the head and the Insomnia Point if you have a difficult time falling asleep.
Potential Benefits of Reiki Self-Healing
I began doing Reiki on myself right after I received the first degree. I gained many physical and emotional benefits, including an improved immune response and stress relief. My eyesight got better after six months of self-treatment. Takata’s recipe for eyesight improvement is to treat the eyes, sides of the head and back of the head for ten minutes each on a daily basis in addition to the standard self-treatment routine. She also recommended eye-strengthening exercises before the sessions. Old chronic problems may improve with Reiki. After several years of having a consistent Reiki for self-healing practice, two students, each with lifelong thyroid deficiencies, were able to discontinue thyroid medication with their physicians’ approval. Several female students with fertility problems were able to conceive after practicing Reiki self healing for some time. Rheumatoid arthritis, hypertension, allergies, pre-menstrual syndrome and other chronic illnesses can often be improved by Reiki self-treatment. Keep in mind that conditions present for years are unlikely to disappear overnight. Reiki for self-healing can serve as preventive maintenance. It keeps cells energized, making it more difficult for disease to set in. If you decide to do the Reiki for self healing hand positions daily for at least six months, you should notice a significant improvement in your emotional and physical health.
Combining Reiki with Yoga
Yoga involves channeling and using lifeforce energy, or prana, so combining the two modalities makes sense. There are several ways to combine Reiki with yoga and even in your personal practice at any moment. One way, for example, if you wish to experience Reiki during class, is to incorporate inhaling light and universal energy into your body. When you perform poses and holds, send energy into the spaces. If you’re a teacher, you could have your class perform Yin or Restorative Yoga, and perform Reiki on students as they hold their poses. You could also lay your hands on students’ shoulders and feet during Savasana, to send them energy and ground them.
A Simple Exercise to Try
Here’s one exercise to try: Start by grounding yourself. Imagine there are roots extending from your seat and feet down into the earth. If you are lying down, they can come from your back body. Once you feel rooted, imagine healing white light pouring into your crown chakra, at the top of your head. Imagine the light filling your body. You can color the light a warm shade (like purple or orange) if you wish, to charge it with energy, or keep it white and glowing. Inhale this light as you feel it coming in, and then exhale any pain, fear or negativity. You can color what you exhale grey. Next, either run the light down through your body, your chakras, or any area of yourself that feels pain or tightness.

The convenience of self-care is valued not only by people with health challenges, but also by others with busy schedules who are seeking more balance in their lives. Learning Reiki self-care can benefit people who are healthy and those with chronic health conditions, whether it's diabetes, asthma, cancer, epilepsy, fatigue syndromes, depression, or heart disease, to name just a few. They can practice Reiki on themselves every day to reduce stress and strengthen wellbeing and repeat the Reiki practice as often as they feel the need.
Potential Benefits for Animals
There is also some anecdotal evidence that Reiki has potential for benefiting animals in many of the same ways experienced by humans. Those offering Reiki to their pets are often pleasantly surprised at their pet's interest and cooperation!

Activating the Energy Within
To begin any Reiki practice, you must activate the energy within yourself. Close your eyes and take a few rounds of deep breaths. Imagine the crown of your head opening and a stream of healing white light flowing from the top of your head, into your heart, and out through your arms and hands. Ask to be filled up where you need healing most. As you feel the flow of energy, continue to breathe, and if you find your mind gets busy or starts to question whether this is working, come back to your breath. Envision yourself as a vessel for healing.

To give a sleep-focused Reiki session to a friend or family member, ask the recipient to lie down while you position yourself near their head. Allow them to drift off as you continue to channel the energy through your palms and send the healing light into their entire body. Imagine the body becoming healed, relaxed, and heavy for a peaceful night’s sleep.
Often when people have anxiety and stress, they are not breathing properly, and the shortness of breath can cause more stress. In this Reiki session, you want to channel energy down the recipient’s shoulders and into their body. Place your hands on their shoulders for ten to fifteen minutes. Focus on sending energy into their whole body and breathing deeply with them. This can naturally bring some of the intense mental energy down and get them back into their body.
Gratitude and Closing the Energy
It’s important to offer gratitude, cleanse yourself, and close the energy once you’ve completed a healing session. It can be as simple as stepping back, wiping your hands of any excess energy, and placing them in prayer to thank yourself, the energy, and the recipient for the exchange.

As a highly sensitive person, I love the idea of being enveloped in an all-encompassing, universal energy as I move throughout my day. It gives me great comfort to know that I am constantly surrounded by a force field of invisible vibrations that have the power to enhance my general well-being.
What is Reiki & How Does It Work?
Reiki is a Japanese technique that is used to heal physical and mental trauma, and to support mental clarity and spiritual well-being. In Japanese, the word "rei" refers to a higher intelligence that permeates all living and nonliving entities and guides the inherent functioning of the universe. The word "ki" refers to the nonphysical energy that flows through everything that is alive, including plants, animals, and human beings-because of this, ki is also often called "life force energy," and is known as qi or chi from other lineages. The combination of these two words is what defines reiki as "spiritually guided life-force energy."
To administer Reiki, a practitioner channels life force energy through his or her hands unto another. It's said that the aforementioned spiritual guidance enables the Reiki to flow through the affected parts of the subject's energy field and charges them with positive energy. It raises awareness in and around the physical body where negative thoughts and feelings are contained. This causes the negative energy-such as stress, anxiety, physical pain, sadness, confusion, etc.-to loosen its grip, allowing the touch of the Reiki healer to swoop in and clarify the energy pathways.
Becoming a Reiki Practitioner
Reiki is different from almost all other healing modalities. It’s actually transferred to each student from a Reiki master during what is called an attunement process.
Reiki Level 1 & 2 Experiences
The most important piece of the Level 1 training is to ensure that the practitioner's energy channels are opened on a physical level, enabling him or her to connect to the universal life force energy, which flows from the cosmos through the crown of the head and into the heart and hands. This experience often causes many practitioners to report feeling sensations in their palms after the first attunement.
After completing Level 1, I felt energized and full of hope. My faith and belief in the power of things we cannot see and perhaps don’t fully understand was heightened, and ever since, I’ve felt more mystified, excited, and intrigued by the universe at large.
Once we received our Level 2 attunement, we dove right into learning all about, as well as how to draw, the major Reiki symbols. These sacred symbols are each associated with a specific healing frequency, such as power, emotional wellbeing, and balance. They are drawn in midair before a healing session begins to help practitioners focus their energy on the most relevant frequency for the person they are practicing on, and to help them connect more deeply to the universal energy.
We also learned how to channel Reiki beyond the boundaries of time and space (i.e., distance Reiki). Through time transcendence, we can heal ourselves and others of any physical or emotional traumas that occurred at any point in life-even as small children. Through space transcendence, we can heal those we love from afar.
The Path to Reiki Mastery
Because becoming a master requires such a deep commitment to the practice, it’s important that one continually utilizes their Reiki healing abilities, meditates on which spiritual path feels right for them, and spends significant time considering and selecting a master to learn from.
Real-World Applications
My partner has horrible back issues, and I performed Reiki on his back every evening for about a week. Very shortly thereafter, his omnipresent back pain had disappeared, and he hasn’t experienced any since! Sure, this could be attributed to other factors, but given the timing, the fact that he did not change any other habits at all, and that absolutely nothing he had tried in the past had been able to relieve his pain, I’m giving credit to the reiki!
Considerations When Learning Reiki
Learning Reiki is a good starting point for experiencing and working with healing energy and a wonderful method for deepening awareness of universal energy. In general, Reiki complements other healing methods and spiritual practices. There are no hard and fast rules about how to approach starting Reiki and starting healing. Once you have learned a healing technique, the work begins. To develop your understanding of, and sensitivity in, Reiki it is a good idea to devote time to regular practice, find a supportive teacher and practice group and pursue continuing study.
As time went by, Mrs. Takata contemplated the need to train other Reiki Masters. She realized that the Japanese concept of respect might be difficult to instill in the Western mind. Because Reiki Mastership is so easily learned, being simply passed on during the Reiki Master attunement, she felt that Westerners might not value it. So she devised a plan of charging a large sum of money for those wanting to become Reiki Masters. She felt that money was something that Western people understood and respected and this would help create the appreciation and gratitude for Reiki that was needed. She decided that $10,000 would be a large enough sum to instill the respect needed for the Reiki Master attunement. She also set the fees for Reiki I at $175 and Reiki II at $500.
If a practitioner is not available, you may wish to go ahead and start with a class. If money is a problem, some teachers offer scholarships.
