A minimum Florida State University (FSU) cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 2.0 ("C") or better is required for graduation. Students should maintain at least this minimum at all times to be in good standing. The university seeks students who demonstrate satisfactory academic progress, including successful completion of credit hours and progression toward completing a degree. The University reserves the right not to retain students who do not demonstrate satisfactory academic progress.

Your GPA is one of the strongest predictors of your chances at FSU. If your GPA is around 3.6 or higher, you’re aligned with admitted students.

Unweighted GPA
Applicants’ unweighted GPA when applying to FSU should be between 3.50 - 4.0 to be strong candidates. The average unweighted GPA of students that applied to FSU for the 2022 - 2023 school year was 3.71. Candidates that have a GPA below the 3.50 - 4.0 range will need to compensate by increasing their SAT or ACT score.

Weighted GPA
FSU considers weighted GPA as one of its admissions factors. The median weighted GPA for Florida State University is 4.4 and its middle 50 percentile ranges from 4.3 - 4.6. According to the Registrar Office, FSU uses core academic subjects in its GPA calculation when considering which students to admit. IB coursework, AP classes, and AICE are all weighted and used in FSU’s recalculation. This means taking higher level courses will help show you’re a competitive candidate for FSU.
For Florida State, the GPA requirements for the Summer of 2023 and Fall of 2023 are between 4.1 - 4.5 and 4.3 - 4.6, respectively. You will need a very high GPA and will likely be graduating at the top of your class in order to get into FSU. According to FSU’s Registrar Office, the minimum GPA requirement is a weighted 3.0.

GPA and Academic Standing
Any time a student’s FSU cumulative GPA (not including transfer credits) falls below 2.0, the student will have a designation of “Academic Probation” placed on their transcript and the student will be placed on academic probation for their next term of enrollment at FSU.
Students who do not return to good academic standing after a semester on academic probation and who earn a term GPA of less than 2.5 will be dismissed from the university. Students on academic probation who do not return to good academic standing but who earn a term GPA of 2.5 or higher at FSU will have their academic standing reflected as “Academic Probation Continued.” A student may be on “Academic Probation Continued” for a maximum of two consecutive terms.

GPA for Specific Programs
The Herbert Wertheim College of Business has certification requirements in the following majors: Human Resource Management, Management, Marketing, Professional Sales, Real Estate and Risk Management/Insurance, which means you have to complete all our prerequisites and have a minimum GPA in order to meet the certification requirements to be eligible for upper division coursework.
Students wishing to major in Accounting, Finance or Management Information Systems must have a specific GPA in all attempts for the prerequisite courses for certification. Students must complete all requirements by the end of their 4th term of enrollment.
Students transferring to Florida State University from any other institution are expected to have all requirements completed at the time of transfer. Must have the required overall GPA (computed on all prior college-level work) that is in effect for the term in which application is made.
A 2.90 GPA is required for the following Wertheim College majors: Human Resource Management, Management, Marketing, Professional Sales, Real Estate and Risk Management/Insurance. The required GPA is subject to change each year.
Accounting, Finance and Management Information Systems majors are required to be in good academic standing and have a 2.5 GPA in the prerequisite courses, which is calculated using all course attempts up until the point the requirement is satisfied. Course retakes after a successful grade is achieved are not factored into the prerequisite GPA calculation.

The Role of Standardized Tests
FSU requires test scores, and they are an important part of the admissions review. FSU also superscores, which means they combine your highest section scores across all test dates. This policy gives you a major advantage.
FSU requires at least one official SAT or ACT score by the time you submit your application.
SAT Requirements
The SAT requirement for Florida State University is a 1340 - 1440 composite score, combining the reading and writing, and math sections together. The FSU average SAT score was 1370 for the class on 2024. To fall into the SAT range of 1340-1440 means you need have an incredibly high SAT score. To put this into perspective, the College Board stated that a score of 1350 placed in the top 10% of SAT takers in 2019. If your SAT score is lower than 1340 at the time you apply, you’ll want to make sure that you perform above average on your other standardized tests or other sections of the FSU application.
Those applying to Florida State should have a SAT composite score between 1310-1430 to be considered strong candidates for admission to FSU. If you fall below this range, it might be in your best interest to compensate by including your ACT score or having an above-average GPA.
The 25th percentile SAT score is 1290, and the 75th percentile SAT score is 1400. In other words, a 1290 places you below average, while a 1400 will move you up to above average.
ACT Requirements
31 is the go-to ACT composite score Florida State University is looking for after combining the English, math, reading, and science sections. Because of that, you’ll need a very strong ACT score in order to get into FSU. If you don’t have the ACT score you are hoping for by the time you apply, you’ll need to make sure that the other sections of your application are above-average. Having a stronger SAT score, GPA, or impressive extracurricular activities can help compensate for a lower ACT score.
Applicants with a score between 29 and 32 on their ACT will be considered strong candidates for admission to FSU. The 25th percentile ACT score is 29, and the 75th percentile ACT score is 32.

Superscoring
FSU uses superscoring for both the SAT and the ACT. They combine these to create your strongest possible score profile. This policy gives you flexibility in how you prepare. Your goal is to move into the upper end of the published ranges. Doing so can compensate for a slightly lower GPA or fewer AP/IB courses.
This is also known as "superscoring." This means that you can choose which SAT tests you want to send to the school. How does superscoring change your test strategy? Even though the highest total you scored on any one test date was 1000, FSU will take your highest section score from all your test dates, then combine them to form your Superscore. This is important for your testing strategy. Because you can choose which tests to send in, and FSU forms your Superscore, you can take the SAT as many times as you want, then submit only the tests that give you the highest Superscore. Therefore, if your SAT superscore is currently below a 1400, we strongly recommend that you consider prepping for the SAT and retaking it. Even better, because of the Superscore, you can focus all your energy on a single section at a time. If your Reading score is lower than your other sections, prep only for the Reading section, then take the SAT. Then focus on Math for the next test, and so on.

Test-Optional Considerations
Students admitted under this regulation are first-time-in-college (FTIC) students although they are not required to submit ACT, CLT, or SAT scores. However, they should meet the requirements for their selected major as listed in FSU's Academic Program Guide. If admitted, they must submit a $200 enrollment deposit, attend a first-year orientation session, and are eligible to apply for on-campus housing. Admitted students without a test score are not eligible to be considered for first-year merit scholarships from the Office of Admissions.
Optional Essay
FSU’s essay is optional, but it can significantly strengthen your application. Write early enough to revise, refine, and receive feedback.The essay, a required component of the application, should be no longer than 650 words, and may be uploaded after the application has been submitted.

Application Timeline and Deadlines
FSU’s application timeline gives you several pathways, but missing a deadline can eliminate opportunities.
FSU doesn’t offer binding early decision, but they do offer early action for Florida residents. If you qualify, this pathway gives you an earlier review and a mid-December decision.
This is the main pathway for most applicants. FSU continues reviewing applicants into early spring.
The Florida State University application deadline for regular decision is December 1st. Florida residents are also able to apply early action by October 15th.
Financial Aid and Scholarships
FAFSA opens in October.
Most students first encounter FSU’s University Freshman Scholarship, a merit-based award that requires no separate application. Students typically receive up to $2,400 per year for four years, which can significantly reduce in-state or out-of-state tuition costs. This scholarship is designed to reward consistency.
Maintaining Good Academic Standing
Students experiencing a personal hardship or crisis that has impacted their grades and/or those who have decided to take a semester off should consult with their dean’s office to discuss their options.
Students who earn an FSU GPA below 2.0 in their first semester at FSU will be mandated to enroll in a 1 credit SLS course. SLS 1122 - Strategies for Academic Success and SLS 3140 - Academic Success Strategies for Transfer students are designed to help students maximize resources on campus and improve their academic outcomes. Students will be administratively enrolled in the appropriate SLS course during their second semester and will not be allowed to drop the course.

You can access your transcript by logging into myFSU and clicking on the SC icon. Term GPA is the GPA you receive at the end of each semester. Cum GPA refers to your cumulative GPA of coursework at FSU only. You can find your Cum GPA at the end of your transcript. Combined Cum GPA is coursework at FSU and outside of FSU combined. When using the GPA Calculator, be sure to use the correct information.
