The Davidson Fellows Scholarship is awarded to gifted and high-achieving students, 18 years old or younger, who have completed a significant project or body of work. This scholarship provides a unique opportunity for gifted students to receive substantial financial support and recognition for their outstanding work.

Eligibility Criteria

Before embarking on the application process, it's crucial to ensure you meet the eligibility requirements. The Davidson Institute seeks students whose projects demonstrate a depth of knowledge comparable to college graduate-level work. This scholarship isn't designed for novice-level projects.

To be eligible for the Davidson Fellows Scholarship, applicants must:

Be 18 years old or younger as of October.
Be a U.S. citizen residing in the United States, a Permanent Resident of the United States residing in the United States, or be stationed overseas due to active U.S. military duty.
Have completed a significant piece of work in one of the submission categories.
Be able to demonstrate that the work is his or her own creation.
Be able to attend an in-person event, with at least one parent or guardian.

Teams of two are eligible, provided both members meet all eligibility requirements. There is no minimum age for eligibility.

What Constitutes a "Significant Piece of Work"?

Scholarships are awarded based on significant work, defined as an accomplishment recognized by experts in the field as meaningful and possessing the potential to positively contribute to society. The Davidson Institute is looking for students whose projects are at, or close to, the college graduate level with a depth of knowledge in their particular area of study. This scholarship is not geared toward students at the novice level.

The Davidson Fellows application process involves two key parts. The initial portion asks for a brief description of the project/portfolio to ensure eligibility. The second part of the application is where you input your nominators’ information and send them their forms, as well as submit all the category requirements.

Each submission undergoes a thorough examination for completeness and accuracy. Qualified entries are then sorted by category and evaluated by an independent team of judges comprised of professionals with expertise in related domain areas. The team of judges may, at their sole discretion, consult with additional experts to assist in evaluating the merits of each submission.

The scope and quality of the work submitted.
The level of significance of the work submitted, as deemed by experts in the domain area (or a related domain area).
The applicant’s depth of knowledge and understanding of the work and the related domain area.

Academic Integrity

Applicants affirm that all content in their submission is entirely their original work, both in substance and presentation. Applicants are not to submit their work without acknowledging any word-for-word use and/or paraphrasing of writing, ideas or other work that is not their own. All submissions are run through plagiarism detection and AI-generated text detection software.

Academic fraud, misconduct, misrepresentation of work or attribution, or violations of the rules and eligibility requirements may result in disqualification and the forfeiture of any monetary awards. Applicants cannot plagiarize or fabricate text, images, data, etc.

Scholarship Awards

The independent team of judges will identify which applicants will be named Davidson Fellows and decide whether they will receive a $100,000, $50,000 or $25,000 scholarship.

Eligible Project Categories

The Davidson Fellows Scholarship encompasses a wide array of categories, allowing students with diverse talents and interests to apply. The application categories are Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, Literature, Music, Philosophy and Outside the Box.

Projects Involving Human or Animal Subjects

Projects involving live vertebrates are not eligible. Projects involving the following live invertebrates like C. elegans, Drosophila, Hydra, Mosquitoes are eligible. Additionally, projects involving zebrafish no older than 168 hours post-fertilization are eligible. Projects using human subjects are eligible - IRB paperwork must be submitted with the initial portion of the application.

Tissue-related projects are eligible if: the materials were collected for other purposes; no embryos were sacrificed; the student is collaborating with a qualified lead scientist; and the applicant provides approval from a recognized Institutional Review Board (IRB) or Scientific Review Committee (SRC).

Please submit documentation (ISEF forms are accepted) with the initial portion of the application for review by the Davidson Fellows program to ensure eligibility.

Ineligible Project Types

Projects in the arts including photography, sculpture, film, visual, etc.
Dance, drama/performance art, film, photography, fine arts or visual arts are not eligible to be considered for a Davidson Fellows scholarship
Athletic accomplishments are not acceptable work for a Davidson Fellows scholarship.
Describing a future major or occupation is NOT an eligible submission.

Understanding Scholarship Restrictions and Usage

Each scholarship may be used only for qualified tuition and related expenses, as defined in the Internal Revenue Code §117(b) and related regulations. The Davidson Institute shall determine the time and conditions of payment of scholarships at its sole discretion. The Davidson Institute may specify the documentation required to assure the Davidson Institute that the recipient is following an appropriate course of study.

Important Scholarship Conditions

Scholarship money will be available for 10 years from the date of the award.
The Davidson Fellows scholarship must be used to further the recipient's education through attendance at an accredited institution of learning.
Scholarship recipients do not have to major in the same subject category in which they applied for the Davidson Fellows scholarship.

Additional Considerations

Conflict of Interest

In order to avoid an actual or apparent conflict of interest, a judge must not be closely related to applicants that the judge is screening, evaluating or judging. Accordingly, no one may act as a judge with respect to an application if he or she is related to any applicant, or otherwise feels that he or she might be, or appear to be, biased.

Disqualification

The Davidson Institute or its judges may decide to disqualify an application if it or they are of the opinion that there has been no timely and proper submission of the application, there is a lack of sufficient merit, or if there is a violation of any portion of the rules or regulations. Disqualification may also occur if an application that is submitted on time contains any omissions or errors.

Davidson Fellows Recognition Events

Davidson Fellows must be available to attend, with one parent or guardian, the awards reception and other recognition events to be held in September in Washington, DC. (Travel expenses and lodging will be provided by the Institute.) Davidson Fellows are honored every year in Washington, D.C.
