City Year Scholarships: Opportunities for Education and Community Service

City Year offers a unique opportunity to serve communities and gain access to exclusive scholarships for further education. As a City Year AmeriCorps member or alum, individuals become eligible for scholarships for both undergraduate and graduate studies, in addition to receiving a Segal Education Award and other valuable benefits and resources.

Understanding City Year and AmeriCorps

City Year AmeriCorps members dedicate a year to serving in classrooms, gaining valuable insights into themselves, their students, and the educational system. City Year alums, now numbering over 40,000, pursue diverse career paths in various fields, including business, government, medicine, and education. City Year AmeriCorps members work closely with students, parents, and other adults in school communities.

As an organization, City Year unites, prepares, and supports teams of young people who want to make a positive impact on their world. Service with City Year is challenging yet rewarding, requiring commitment and dedication. On average, members serve all day Monday through Friday, with occasional late nights and weekends.

Eligibility for City Year

To be eligible for City Year, applicants must be a U.S. citizen or legal permanent resident and have completed high school or a GED.

A modest, bi-weekly living stipend, with amounts determined by the cost of living in each of the 29 City Year sites.

The Segal AmeriCorps Education Award, which can be used for tuition costs or to pay back existing student loans. The amount of the award is subject to change annually and is tied to the maximum amount of the Pell Grant.

City Year Scholarships: Opportunities for Further Education

City Year AmeriCorps members, alumni, and staff are eligible for exclusive scholarships for various undergraduate and graduate programs. These scholarships provide financial assistance to pursue higher education goals.

Warner School of Education and Human Development at the University of Rochester

City Year AmeriCorps members, alumni, and staff are eligible for exclusive scholarships for the following qualifying master's programs at the Warner School of Education and Human Development:

Counseling
Education Policy
Higher Education
Human Development
Teaching & Curriculum

Scholarships are awarded to City Year AmeriCorps members and alumni who complete at least one term of service and City Year staff employed for at least two years. Applicants will be considered for additional merit-based awards depending on the strength of their application.

Louisiana State University (LSU)

Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge offers 100% tuition scholarships to at least two City Year applicants each year. The applicant must be enrolled in a full-time degree-granting, graduate-level program at Louisiana State’s flagship Baton Rouge campus. Scholarships include a graduate internship with the Office of Community-University Partnerships, up to 10 hours per week for two semesters of the graduate program. Students will likely work on programming related to K-12 education, with opportunities to serve some hours at City Year Baton Rouge. Applicants with a minimum undergraduate GPA of 3.7 will receive a minimum 70% scholarship; standardized test score and ethical/moral dilemma essay admission requirements waived. In addition, only one letter of recommendation is required for admission and successful applicants receive automatic acceptance into the Washington, D.C.

Saint Mary’s University

Each year, Saint Mary’s University in San Antonio, Texas, offers up to four City Year alums the opportunity to pursue their undergraduate degree with an annual tuition scholarship valued at 75%.

School for International Training (SIT) Graduate Institute

The School for International Training’s Graduate Institute offers internationally focused master’s degrees, certificates and professional development programs in the fields of humanitarian assistance, international education, peace leadership, sustainable development and Teaching English to speakers of other languages.

Application Process

AmeriCorps members, alumni, and staff interested in these scholarships must complete the full application process for the institution. Please check the “City Year” box on the Graduate Institute’s online application. A letter will be sent electronically by City Year to the admissions office and added to the applicant file. Note that all admissions and scholarship decisions are made by the educational institution.

Using the Segal AmeriCorps Education Award

The Segal AmeriCorps Education Award can be used to pay for tuition costs at specific schools or repay qualifying student loans. The easiest way to manage the award and make payments to institutions or lenders is to register for a My AmeriCorps account. The award is taxable in the year it is used. Eligibility is based on a minimum of 1,700 service hours, completion of all City Year graduation requirements, and serving for the entire program length.

Additional Opportunities

The AmeriCorps Education Award can also be used for programs at the National Outdoor Leadership School and Outward Bound.
