City College Elder Care Programs: A Comprehensive Guide
City College offers a variety of programs and resources designed to support the well-being and continued learning of older adults. These initiatives range from free classes and activities to specialized academic courses and certificate programs. This article provides a detailed overview of these opportunities.
Free and Low-Cost Activities
HSA and its community partners offer a wide range of free or low-cost classes and activities for older adults throughout the City. At the centers, you'll meet people and have fun while taking classes like tai chi, painting, quilting, computer literacy, and computer access or participating in exercise programs, social events, and day trips. Low-cost meal programs and social services referrals may also be available.
The Older Adults Department at CCSF offers non-credit classes specially designed for students that are 55 plus, but all are welcome to attend. The classes are held in Chinatown/North Beach and Mission Centers, in neighborhoods that are accessible by bus or BART. Course offerings span several different disciplines, including health & wellness, and the arts. Classes are open for enrollment at any time during the semester, as long as the class is not already full. To enroll simply attend a class and fill out a registration form there. Unless otherwise noted, classes are open to all levels of experience.
The Older Adults Program (OLAD) at City College is proud to have served the community for over 30 years, during which time thousands of students have benefited from our free non-credit courses by gaining knowledge, learning new skills, and staying healthy.

Violence Prevention: Public health perspectives on diverse types of violence, with a focus on trends over time, causes and risk factors of violence, and resiliency, in order to develop strategies for violence prevention. Ethical and Legal Issues in Substance Use Counseling: Introduction to ethical and legal issues in counseling people with substance use disorders. Study frameworks for addressing ethical and legal issues, including a variety of socio-cultural models, and develop an understanding of laws, code of ethics, and client rights. It requires readiness for college-level English or ESL 188.
Community Health: Critical analysis of the causes and contributors to individual and community health and illness based on public health and other social and behavioral sciences. ADVISE: (Readiness for college-level English) or ESL 188
Disease and Injury Prevention: Introduction to public health approaches for the prevention and control of disease and injury, drawn from epidemiology, health policy, behavioral health, environmental health, community organizing, maternal and child health and other public health disciplines. Fieldwork Class: This course supports the HLTH 79W fieldwork class and allows students to make a connection between core course materials and the workplace. Learning Collaborative for Interpreters: Designed to explore the complexities of health and health care, and provides a learning laboratory for collaboration and innovation, breaking the isolation in the work of interpreters. Students will be equipped with 21st-century skills in managing the interpreting session while learning about advances in medicine. All are welcome to join in this learning collaborative aiming towards advancing patient and family-centered care.
