Western Michigan University's Premier Aviation Program
Western Michigan University (WMU) boasts one of the nation's pre-eminent aviation programs. With over 85 years of aviation education, WMU has a long and storied history in the field of aviation, one that consistently places the College of Aviation in the upper echelons of aviation programs. More than just a flight school or an airframe and powerplant program, WMU’s College of Aviation is a university program offering four-year degrees in aviation flight science, aviation management and operations, and aviation maintenance technology.
Federal Funding Boosts Workforce Training
Western Michigan University announced that the College of Aviation has received $819,000 in federal funding. The university said the money, which was made possible by an appropriations bill recently signed into law, will go towards aviation workforce training -- specifically, the purchase of tools such as simulation software, maintenance training simulation, and cockpit electronic trainers. This investment aims to modernize the college's resources and better prepare students for the demands of the aviation industry.
Addressing the Aviation Industry's Growing Demands
Citing a recent report from Boeing, WMU said there is a global need for 660,000 new pilots and 710,000 new maintenance technicians within the next 20 years. In response to these demands, the College of Aviation is taking proactive steps:
- Further developing stackable credentials such as Federal Aviation Administration dispatcher, uncrewed aerial systems and aviation supply chain.
- Providing state-of-the-art equipment for aviation maintenance technician training.
- Increasing the use of virtual reality and augmented reality for training.
- Recently upgrading to a new fleet of Cirrus TRAC20 G7 aircraft -- the most advanced training aircraft in the world.
This strategic approach ensures that WMU graduates are well-equipped to meet the evolving needs of the aviation sector.
Enhancing Recruitment and Outreach
WMU said the federal funding will also be used to support recruitment and outreach efforts "so that Western can better reach the next generation of aviation professionals." By attracting young people to the field and equipping them with the necessary training and expertise, WMU is playing a vital role in shaping the future of aviation. "The future of aviation depends on young people who are interested in this field and equipped with the training and expertise to succeed," WMU President Russ Kavalhuna said. "The senator’s [Sen. Gary Peters] advocacy will help us enhance our program with state-of-the-art curriculum and technology to attract the next generation of aviation professionals.

Degree Programs and Minors
As you begin your exploration into the offerings of the College of Aviation, please take some time to see how the College of Aviation’s program helps to prepare you for the real demands of a professional in the aviation field. The College of Aviation offers three bachelor’s degree programs:
- Aviation Flight Science
- Aviation Management and Operations
- Aviation Maintenance Technology
In addition to the three bachelor’s degree programs, the College of Aviation offers three minors that students can elect to participate in: Aviation Science, Military Leadership and Aviation Studies, and Professional Aviation Preparation. The Aviation Science minor is available to all students at the University. The Professional Aviation Preparation minor is for students in the Aviation Flight Science program that have completed their private pilots license, instrument rating, and commercial pilots license. Students will obtain their Certified Flight Instructor-CFI, Certified Flight Instructor: Instrument-CFII, and Multi-Engine Flight Instructor-MEI-ratings. Due to high demand, students applying for Aviation Flight Science must apply for the Fall semester and complete their applications by the established deadline to be considered for admission into the program. Admission decisions for students applying to the flight science program will be released after each deadline has passed.
Uncrewed Aerial Systems Operations Certificate Program
It will also pay for new equipment for the college’s uncrewed aerial systems operations certificate program, which WMU said they are exploring expanding into its own bachelor of science program.
Location and Facilities
The College of Aviation is located directly on Battle Creek Executive Airport (KBTL). Western Michigan has 85 years of aviation experience, a 100 percent flight and tech operations post-graduation success rate, and 1,100 students. It has a dedicated living learning facility for aviation students, Henry Hall.
Resources and Opportunities
WMU offers on campus dining, student engagement, and opportunities for work study and receive career services. Its students have access to nearly 400 registered student organizations. While the university has a large number of students, a large number of flight instructors means there will be flight spots. Western Michigan University offers the largest fleet of Cirrus aircraft in the world, as well as twins and tailwheel aircraft.
