The School of Professional Studies

The School of Professional Studies focuses on preparing students for careers in fields such as Education, Educational Psychology, Health Promotion, Nursing, and Social Work. The school offers undergraduate degrees in these areas, as well as master's degrees in Nursing and Education and Educational Psychology, and doctoral degrees in Education and Nursing. The School of Visual and Performing Arts

The School of Visual and Performing Arts provides a conservatory-level education at a public university price. Meteorology Program

Two Campuses: Midtown and Westside

WCSU operates two campuses in Danbury: the original Midtown campus and the Westside campus.

Midtown Campus

The Midtown campus, located on White Street near downtown Danbury, houses the Macricostas School of Arts and Sciences, the School of Professional Studies, and most of the university's administration. The campus features dormitories such as Fairfield Hall, Litchfield Hall, and Newbury Hall, as well as the Midtown student center. In 2018, the renovated Higgins Hall reopened. The Midtown observatory is located on the top of the Science Building and is used for both students and on public viewing nights. The telescope has a 6-inch (150 mm) refractor and an 8-inch (200 mm) Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope.

Westside Campus

The Westside campus, situated on a 439-acre lot on the outskirts of Danbury, is home to the Ancell School of Business, the School of Visual and Performing Arts, the Westside Nature Preserve, an amphitheater, and three residence halls. The campus also houses athletic facilities, including the William O'Neill Athletic and Convocation Center and the Westside Athletic Complex, as well as an observatory with a 20-inch Ritchy-Chretien telescope and a 20-foot planetarium dome. The Westside Campus Center, which opened in 2007, serves as a student center, meeting, and banquet facility.

Sustainability Initiatives

WCSU is committed to sustainability, with initiatives such as the installation of a fuel cell power unit for the Science Building on the Midtown campus in 2013. Jane Goodall Center for Excellence in Environmental Studies

In 2005, Western was established by JGI as a "National Center for University Roots and Shoots," leading to the institution of the student environmental club, a chapter of the international Roots & Shoots, on campus.

Archives and Special Collections

The mission of the Archives is to collect and make accessible the WCSU administrative records, faculty papers, university publications, theses, visual materials, and other media created by the university. It also includes non-WCSU affiliated personal papers, local government and organizational records, visual materials, maps, journals and other media that document the history of this region.

Athletics: NCAA Division III Competition

Western Connecticut State University teams, nicknamed the Wolves, compete at the NCAA Division III level. The football team also competes in the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) and is a member of the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) and the Little East Conference (LEC). WCSU offers club-level competition in cheerleading, dance team, ice hockey, men's rugby, ultimate frisbee, and powerlifting.

A Mascot Evolution

The original Western Connecticut State mascot was an Indian. In 1974, a mascot committee recommended changing the name to Canners, "a name that our teams can carry with respect." From 1975 to 1978, the school adopted the nickname Canners to honor the region's fish canneries. After the NCAA deemed the sponsorship with the Candlewood Canning Company of Connecticut illegal, the official mascot became Chuck the Colonial, a man in a blue Tricorne hat. Recently, the university announced the Wolves as their new mascot identity.
