Types of Cal Grants and Specific Requirements

Cal Grant B

Cal Grant B is available to eligible students with financial need who graduated from high school in 2000-2001 or later with a minimum GPA of at least 2.0 on a 4.0 scale. This grant is given to low-income students and includes a living allowance not to exceed $1,672 for an academic year.

Cal Grant Community College Entitlement Award

Students attending a California Community College could be eligible for the Cal Grant Community College Entitlement Award. However, students awarded this cannot transfer the award to a Private College. If a student transfers to a Private College, the award will be withdrawn, and students will be reevaluated for Cal Grant.

Maintaining Eligibility and Award Adjustments

A student’s enrollment status can determine your grant eligibility, and the census date plays a big part. If you are enrolled in less than 12 units, your Cal Grant will be pro-rated, and you will not receive your money at the beginning of the quarter. If you increase to 12 or more units during the add/drop period, you will automatically receive the full amount. If you remain with less than 12 units, your Grant will be pro-rated based on the number of units in which you are enrolled at the end of the add/drop deadline for the quarter.

At the end of the term, the institution will verify that you attended all of the courses for which you were paid Cal Grant funds. If you did not attend one or more courses, your grant amount will be reduced accordingly, and you will be billed.

California Dream Act Service Incentive Grant Program (DSIG)

The California Dream Act Service Incentive Grant Program (DSIG) encourages California Dream Act Application (CADAA) students with a Cal Grant B award to perform community or volunteer service. The California Student Aid Commission (CSAC) will award up to $3,000 per academic year (up to $1,000 per quarter) to 2,500 eligible students. Eligible students must apply annually, attend a qualifying institution, have sufficient unmet financial need, and complete community or volunteer service hours in that academic year. Students shall perform at least 100 hours per quarter of community or volunteer service. Pays systemwide registration fees plus a subsistence stipend.
