Navigating the University of Utah Application Process: A Comprehensive Guide
Applying to a university can be a daunting process. This guide provides a comprehensive overview of the application process for the University of Utah (U of U) and Utah State University (USU), covering important deadlines, requirements, and helpful tips.
Key Application Considerations
Deadlines and Processing Times
Applications will not be accepted after the specified deadline. The Office of Admissions may require several weeks to process your admission paperwork once your file is complete. It's crucial to submit your application well in advance to allow ample processing time.
Employee Tuition Reduction
Eligible employees can apply for employee tuition reduction through UBenefits. It's important to note that the application for employee tuition reduction must be submitted prior to the first day of the semester.
Utah State University (USU) Admissions
USU is recognized as a leading higher-education research institution, offering award-winning faculty, state-of-the-art facilities, and career-driven degree programs. Admission to USU is test optional. If you have any questions along the way, your assigned admissions specialist can assist you.
GPA and Test Scores
A 2.0 GPA is the minimum university standard, but many majors require a higher GPA and/or additional requirements. Students with less than a 2.8 high school GPA may still be admitted in good standing based upon the combination of their GPA and ACT/SAT score.

Transcripts and Test Scores
To be considered official, an official high school transcript must be sent directly from the issuing school to the Utah State University Admissions Office. An official test score report must be sent electronically to Utah State University by the testing agency (ACT or College Board) or included on an official high school transcript to be considered official.
Transfer Students
Applicants are required to submit official transcripts from ALL colleges attended. Transcripts are considered official when the transcript remains in the sealed envelope issued by the transferring institution. Transcripts can be forwarded or hand delivered to USU as long as the transcript remains in the original sealed envelope. Also, electronic transcripts are accepted as being official from participating institutions, however, faxed transcripts will not be accepted. USU is not able to take credits from another institution on another college's transcript. For example: USU is not able to recognize Snow College coursework on a SUU transcript. USU accepts credit from any regionally accredited institution and will try to match credits with courses at USU. The process of finding a course-to-course equivalent is called articulation. If no course match is found, you will receive elective credit for your previous course work. Students who transfer to USU and have an Associate of Arts or an Associate of Science degree (or have completed the General Education requirements) from a regionally-accredited institution may be deemed as having satisfied the General Education portion of the University Studies requirements. However, Utah State University will require students to satisfy the Breadth American Institutions requirement, as well as any deficiencies in Communications Literacy, Quantitative Literacy, and the Depth Education requirements. Applicants must meet the minimum GPA requirement for their desired major. Applicants whose GPA does not meet the requirements of their desired major may be offered an "Exploratory" major if they have at least a 2.0 GPA and fewer than 60 transfer credits.
Special Circumstances
Armed Forces members who cannot attend or start school due to military service will be admitted with the same academic status they had when they last attended. A leave of absence/deferment or new application may be required. Some programs may accept a portfolio in place of admissions test score. Contact the department for application deadlines. Home school applicants are typically not eligible to enroll until after their peers have graduated from traditional high school. Home school students wishing to be considered earlier than this will be evaluated based on the Early Admission standard. Home School students can be considered for academic scholarships. These academic scholarships are awarded for fall semesters. However, the traditional index requirements do not apply to Home School students. Each student’s application will be reviewed individually and ACT/SAT scores will be weighted heavily in the process. Official transcripts from previous schools are NOT required for non-degree seeking admission. While the application is quick and free, non-degree seeking students do have certain restrictions to be aware of. The requirements to obtain a certificate can vary based on a number of factors such as who the issuing agency is, your previous academic history, and the course level of required classes. Many lower level certificates do not have admission requirements. Been an Aggie before? At any time you can log in to your admissions account and check your applications status.
