A few years ago, education professor Lindsay Persohn helped build a literacy partnership between USF Sarasota-Manatee and Booker Middle School, one of Sarasota County’s most economically challenged campuses. More than two dozen USF students became mentors to struggling sixth graders. They created what they called the “Secret Society of Readers.” It wasn’t flashy. It was simple: give middle schoolers a welcoming space to talk about books, build confidence and start believing they could succeed. The school reported measurable gains in assessment scores. But the bigger change was in the students themselves - more engaged, more confident, more willing to take risks in the classroom. At the same time, USF students gained hands-on experience in the very kinds of schools where many of them will eventually teach.
The Duvall Initiative
Through the Duvall Initiative, social work professor Dane Minnick has helped position the campus at the center of the region’s fight against substance misuse and addiction. He has convened law enforcement, health care providers, nonprofit leaders and individuals in recovery to address gaps in prevention and treatment. A conference at USFSM drew more than 200 people from Manatee, Sarasota and DeSoto counties to work through solutions together. The initiative has pursued millions in federal funding to expand recovery and prevention services. USF social work students are not just sitting in lecture halls. They are working alongside community partners and preparing to enter a workforce that is desperately needed here.
Partnership with the Sarasota Police Department
Criminology professor YongJei Lee is part of a team partnering with the Sarasota Police Department to pilot an artificial intelligence-driven crime forecasting tool. Using historical data and advanced analytics, the system helps department leaders make smarter decisions about patrol deployment and resource allocation. This is not abstract research. It is real-world collaboration that strengthens public safety - and it gives students direct experience working with live public safety data.
