International applicants and applicants for whom English is not the native language must submit official scores for either the Test Of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or International English Language Testing System (IELTS). The institution code for the TOEFL exam is 2888.
- TOEFL score recommendations: BE MSE, BIOT, CIS MSE, EE MSE, SE MSE, and IPD programs strongly recommend a TOEFL score of 100 or higher.
- IELTS score recommendations: A minimum of 7.5 is recommended for all programs.
- The TOEFL/IELTS requirement may be waived if the candidate has completed at least three years of academic work on a full-time basis at a university-level institution in the United States or in a country where English is the official language or the medium of instruction.
Applications are evaluated as a whole portfolio, without strict minimums for test scores. Applicants will be notified of the admissions decision through the online application system. Academics are a crucial factor in US school admissions, alongside test scores like GRE or GMAT. A compelling personal statement and relevant experience, such as internships or research, are also important.

Combined Degree Programs: The 4+1 Program with Bryn Mawr and Haverford Colleges
Qualified undergraduates from Bryn Mawr and Haverford can begin a master's degree program at Penn Engineering while completing their undergraduate degree. During their four years at Bryn Mawr, students may enroll in up to three undergraduate engineering courses (biotechnology master's students may count up to four) through reciprocal course exchange agreements with Penn and Swarthmore.
Because the combined degree program requires additional courses beyond those required for the BMC major, students should begin taking appropriate science and math courses at Bryn Mawr in the first semester of their freshman year. Students formally apply to the 4+1 program during the first semester of their junior year, with an application deadline of February 1. A GPA of 3.0 in all courses and a GPA of 3.0 in science and math courses are required to apply. Students must apply to a specific master's degree program.
After acceptance and completion of any prerequisite undergraduate engineering and science courses, students take three graduate engineering courses at Penn while still enrolled at Bryn Mawr, without additional financial charges. During their four years at Bryn Mawr, students also complete all graduation requirements, including the major. The fifth year of the program is spent entirely at Penn, where students take seven additional graduate courses to complete the master's degree requirements.
Financial aid is not available from Penn for the fifth year of the program, although students are eligible for federal student loans.
