University of New Hampshire Merit Scholarships: A Comprehensive Guide

The University of New Hampshire (UNH) blends classic New England charm with strong academics and real-world learning. To be considered for any of these scholarships, students must click Sign In at the top right corner of the UNH Foundation page. This will direct them to the login screen of the campus scholarship portal where they can log in using their UNH ID and password to access and complete the general application as well as any supplemental applications for scholarships that they may be recommended for. It is a student’s responsibility to check back frequently for additional scholarship opportunities that may become available.

Eligibility and Application Process

All students who apply to UNH by the priority application deadline (usually in December) will automatically be considered for merit scholarships. No additional application is required for merit scholarship consideration. However, to be considered for scholarships offered through the University of New Hampshire Foundation, students must complete the general application and any supplemental applications on the campus scholarship portal.

Upon completion of the General Application and any Supplemental Applications, students will automatically be matched to scholarship opportunities for which they qualify based on information they provided on the applications as well as other data being imported from our student management system. These scholarships indicate “None” under “Action” and require no additional information from the student for consideration. Other scholarships for which students may qualify indicate “Apply” under “Action” and require additional information be provided for consideration. A list of these scholarships can be found once students log in to the portal by viewing Recommended Opportunities from the Opportunities tab.

Most UNH merit scholarships require maintaining a 3.2 GPA to remain eligible for renewal.

Types of Merit Scholarships at UNH

UNH offers several merit scholarships for eligible students. The most well-known are the Presidential, Trustee's, Chancellor's, and Dean's scholarships. In addition to these primary merit scholarships, UNH offers various college/department-based scholarships and awards for in-state and out-of-state students.

Presidential Scholarship: This scholarship is awarded to incoming first-year students with outstanding academic records. UNH Durham does not waive general education requirements. That said, most Associate Degree earners tend to bring in the vast majority of their general education requirements when they transfer to UNH after completing their AA/AS.

Openings to be a Residence Assistant become available from time to time. These positions require living in a campus residence hall and being responsible for assisting students on a floor. RA awards include a scholarship, a stipend, and a reduced rate on a single room accommodation.

Upon graduation, F-1 international students are eligible to extend their student status in order to work in the US for up to 12 months (for certain science subjects it could be 36 months). J-1 international students may be eligible to extend their student status in order to work in the US for up to 18 months, or the period of the full course of study in the US, whichever is less. Students can work at full time, full paying positions related to their course of study in companies anywhere in the US.
