UNL provides students with a wide array of academic opportunities designed to enhance their learning experience. The Undergraduate Creative Activities and Research Experiences Program (UCARE) allows students and staff to collaborate on projects, fostering a hands-on learning environment. Students may apply without choosing a major. Through the Exploratory and Pre-Professional Advising Center, students work 1-to-1 with a professional advisor to identify their interests, skills and values, and pick the major that's right for them.

Because the school is a research institution, students in their second year onward benefit from "project-based courses where you…are paired with a company" and are taught from "real world examples" instead of just doing homework from textbooks.

Campus Life and Student Engagement

UNL's 624-acre campus is situated in the city of Lincoln, Nebraska, a vibrant capital city of nearly 300,000 residents. The University of Nebraska-Lincoln consists of three distinct campuses, each with its own unique character and academic offerings. Close in proximity, students can travel between the campuses via bus, bike or on foot. City Campus interconnects with Downtown Lincoln, making it easy to go from class to a movie theater, local restaurant or music venue. East Campus, situated just east of Downtown Lincoln, is a picturesque campus with research centers and laboratories dedicated to agriculture and veterinary sciences. Nebraska Innovation Campus connects the University of Nebraska with private industry through research, facilities and student talent.

There are endless opportunities for students to get involved at Nebraska and find their academic community, with over 500 registered student organizations and more than 60 countries to explore while studying abroad. Learning Communities are a great way for students to make the most of their first year at Nebraska as they live with peers with common interests, enroll in shared courses and work with mentors in their field.

Students overwhelmingly name the Division I football team ("Go Big Red!") as being a generator of school spirit that spreads into the "incredible college town." "Since this is the only football team here in Nebraska, many people are very excited for game days here in Lincoln," one student reports. Intramural sports are also popular: "there are always pick-up games of soccer, ultimate Frisbee, football" and so on "on the outdoor artificial turf fields, as well as the indoor practice facilities," which includes an "indoor football field for students."About "20 percent of students are in Greek life," and "the whole campus is always attending their philanthropy events." And with over 500 clubs, students need not leave campus to pack their schedules with activities outside of studying.

Mental Health and Well-being Support

UNL is committed to the well-being of its students. Staff have had years of mental health training in these areas through the graduate programs and continuing education. We have peer-to-peer offerings through our Well-being Ambassador program, where students schedule time with an Ambassador and utilize motivational interviewing to help students better understand their own overall well-being. Depending on the needs of the student during the meeting time we may refer them to CAPS (Counseling & Psychological Services) for more structured professional care. Trained mental health professionals serving as “Counselors-in-Residence” are available to meet with students close to home in the residence halls.

While located in a designated hall, counselors can meet students from any residence hall. There is no cost and no session limit. Counselors-in-Residence are located in Harper Dining, Abel/Sandoz Welcome Center and Eastside Suites. Common session topics include homesickness, school stress, depression, anxiety, coping skills, developing healthy habits, family struggles, roommate and relationship problems, trauma, stress and grief/loss. All counselors are second-year graduate students in the UNL Marriage and Family Therapy program.

The College of Journalism and Mass Communications offers a course in mindfulness and meditative practices, including its history and development. UNL’s Campus Recreation offers a six-week beginners meditation program focused on mindfulness.

Facilities and Resources

UNL offers a range of modern facilities to support its academic and research endeavors. Kiewit Hall is a 182,000-square-foot hub for engineering education and home to the construction management program. The 240,000-square-foot Hawks Hall inspires collaboration and innovation within the College of Business. The 140,000-square-foot Beadle Center houses advanced research and teaching in genetics, biochemistry and plant science. The Nebraska Center for Entrepreneurship helps students turn ideas into ventures through mentorship, workshops, competitions and funding.

Financial Aid and Affordability

Tuition rates at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln vary for in-state and out-of-state students, as it is a public university. Courses within the Colleges of Business, College of Architecture and College of Engineering have differential tuition rates. Discounted tuition is available for specific populations.

Students should submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) Form. Priority filing deadline is May 1. Need-based scholarships and grants are offered, including the Nebraska Promise for Nebraska residents, a tuition program for students with family income of $65,000 or less or are Pell Grant-eligible. Academic scholarships are also provided for Nebraska residents who apply by February and out-of-state students who apply by May 1. Admitted students are notified of scholarships and financial aid on a rolling basis beginning in February. Students are reviewed for academic scholarships through the admissions application and can maximize consideration for departmental scholarships as well as leadership and service scholarships through the supplemental Scholarship Application. These scholarships are awarded based on a holistic review, meaning academic performance is only one of many aspects of consideration. Nebraska is test preferred for scholarship consideration.

Career Services and Opportunities

The main goal of UNL’s Career Service Center is to facilitate connections between students and the professional world, with undergrads noting the abundance of “opportunities for internships and other pre-employment experiences." Activities are described as "really helpful with job placement," and include things like targeted career fairs that bring in local businesses to talk to students. Students also have the chance to “go out and explore in the real world [by] job shadowing professionals.” The Career Service Center’s services are anything but one-size-fits-all - UNL has multiple affinity programs that specialize in advocating for and supporting women, students of color, LGBTQIA+ individuals, students with disabilities, and more during their career prep. For undergrads who want even more face time with the experts, the university offers drop-in career advising online and in-person every Monday through Friday.

Entrepreneurial Programs

For the second consecutive year, five programs joined forces to drive the university’s success: the Center for Entrepreneurship, Clifton Strengths Institute Builders Program, Engler Agribusiness Entrepreneurship Program, Jeffrey S. Raikes School of Computer Science and Management, and Johnny Carson Center for Emerging Media Arts. The Center for Entrepreneurship led the collaborative effort to submit data for the survey.

Students in the Clifton Builders Program apply their entrepreneurial talents through hands-on experiences, such as real-world consulting projects with Nebraska businesses.“Clifton Builders use their natural talents to create a positive impact in their communities, businesses and teams,” said Tim Hodges, Joan Heiser Endowed Presidential Chair, executive director of the Clifton Strengths Institute and associate professor of practice in management.

Recent Achievements and Growth

In Fall 2024, UNL’s 23,992 students represented a 1.7 percent increase over Fall 2023. Student retention from first to second year increased, reaching a record of 86 percent. UNL also experienced tremendous growth in sponsored research awards for fiscal year 2023, totaling $194 million - an all-time high and a 12% increase from the previous year.
