University of Minnesota Continuing Education Programs: A Lifelong Learning Journey
The University of Minnesota has a long-standing commitment to providing continuing education opportunities for adult learners. This commitment is embodied in the College of Continuing and Professional Studies (CCAPS), a professional school within the University of Minnesota system. CCAPS offers a wide array of programs designed to meet the diverse needs of individuals seeking to enhance their knowledge, skills, and careers.
A Historical Perspective
The roots of continuing education at the University of Minnesota can be traced back to 1913 with the establishment of the General Extension Division by University President George Edgar Vincent. The purpose of this division was to provide ongoing education to adult learners. Over the years, the division underwent several name changes, including the College of Continuing Education and Extension and University College, before ultimately becoming the College of Continuing and Professional Studies (CCAPS).
The College of Continuing and Professional Studies (CCAPS)
In recognition of its evolving mission and the diverse audience it serves, the College of Continuing Education (CCE) officially changed its name to the College of Continuing and Professional Studies (CCAPS). This name change reflects the college's emphasis on programs that are aligned with the ever-changing needs of the workforce in Minnesota and beyond.
Dean Mary Nichols explained that the new name better reflects the college's mission: "to provide opportunities for people to enhance their academic credentials, to advance their careers through professional courses, and to continue to learn across their lifespan through enrichment activities."
CCAPS offers a range of credit and noncredit programs for degree-seeking students, certificate seekers, and those seeking to enhance their professional knowledge through coursework and conferences. The college's individualized degrees offer flexibility for students seeking to self-design programs that meet their unique goals.
