Employees gain immediate access to health insurance and prescription drug coverage starting on their first day of employment. Employees can choose from several plans and plan types, including comprehensive major medical, Health Maintenance Organization (HMO), and Preferred Provider Organization (PPO) options. Coverage is also available for eligible dependents. Furthermore, employees can combine any U-M health plan with a pre-tax healthcare Flexible Spending Account (FSA).

UM Health-Sparrow also offers a variety of health, dental, and vision options providing different levels of coverage, including PPO, HSA, and HMO health options and comprehensive dental and vision choices.

Prescription Drug Plan

All eligible participants in university health plans are automatically enrolled in the U-M Prescription Drug Plan. This plan covers most prescription drugs without a deductible, offering a choice of three coverage levels.

University Observed Holidays

The university observes several holidays, including:

  • Floating Holiday*

*The floating holiday was added in 2025. It is a single day that must be used within the 12-month calendar year to celebrate a day of personal significance. Most areas offer the flexibility to substitute holidays when needed or when the nature of your job requires work on a designated holiday.

Retirement Savings Plan

U-M provides a generous retirement plan to help employees save for their future.

Retirement Plan

The university offers a generous two-for-one match of employee contributions to the 403(b) Basic Retirement Plan. Employees also have the option to save more through a 403(b) Supplemental Retirement Account (SRA) and a 457(b) Deferred Compensation Plan. SRA and 457(b) contributions can be made on a pre-tax or after-tax (Roth) basis. Employees can choose to invest with TIAA or Fidelity Investments, or both.

UM Health-Sparrow provides a generous 401(k) savings plan with immediate enrollment upon hire and access to diverse fund options. An automatic deferral of 6% of pay will be deducted from each paycheck as soon as administratively possible following a 60-day opt-out period.
