Understanding University of Maryland Graduate Tuition and Fees
Navigating the financial aspects of graduate education can be daunting. This article provides a comprehensive overview of the tuition and fees structure at the University of Maryland, College Park, offering clarity for prospective and current graduate students.
Standard Graduate Tuition and Fees
The University of Maryland, College Park's tuition stands at $11,809 for in-state students and $41,186 for out-of-state students. When compared to the national average cost of in-state tuition of $12,436, the University of Maryland, College Park, is more affordable for in-state residents. However, for out-of-state students, the tuition is more expensive than the national average cost of out-of-state tuition, which is $29,815.
These figures, often referred to as the sticker price, encompass both tuition and mandatory fees. These fees can vary across institutions and commonly support essential services such as library access, student gym facilities, student centers, technology resources, and campus health centers.
Total Cost of Attendance
When comparing the costs of different institutions, it’s crucial to consider the total cost, which includes the sticker price along with the cost of food and housing, books and supplies, transportation, and personal expenses. At the University of Maryland, College Park, the total cost is $31,730 for in-state students and $61,108 for out-of-state students.
Universities at Shady Grove
For students attending the Universities at Shady Grove, the tuition mirrors that of the University of Maryland, College Park. However, it's important to note that the mandatory fees at Shady Grove differ.

Important Considerations Regarding Tuition and Fees
The University System of Maryland Board of Regents reserves the right to make changes to tuition, fees, and other charges at any time such changes are deemed necessary.
International Student Fee
UMD charges a fee of $125 each semester for enrolled students (admitted after Fall 2017) requiring an I-20 or DS-2019 (for degree-seeking students in J-1 status) issued by the university. Students enrolled in an academic program operating on the 12-week calendar, which requires an I-20 issued by UMD or a DS-2019, will be charged a fee of $62.50 per term.
Differential Tuition
Only students pursuing a major in business, engineering, and computer science will be charged additional tuition based on credit hours. These figures are averages and will vary from student to student. Some other courses throughout the University charge differential (higher) tuition to all students who enroll in specific courses. Often business courses (BMGT) fall under this category, as do courses like telecommunications (ENTS), courses offered through the CMNS Science Academy (MSML, DATA, etc), and the Section PJ0* of CMSC courses. Taking the differential tuition into account in course planning is a student's individual responsibility as MAGE students will be charged the differential tuition of the course they are registered in.
Programs with Non-Standard Tuition and Fees
It is important to determine the correct tuition payment for programs/courses. Most programs/courses use the standard graduate tuition rates - a per-credit charge. Tuition assistance provided through graduate assistantships and tuition assistance provided for fellowships (when applicable), covers the standard tuition amount only. There are several graduate programs with non-standard tuition and fees. Note that university-provided tuition will only cover the standard rate; the student is responsible for the difference unless other financial support is provided. Also note that not all programs/courses will accept Golden ID tuition assistance - check the program requirements prior to applying or enrolling.
Several graduate programs at UMD have non-standard tuition and fees structures, including:

- MAGE (Maryland Applied Graduate Engineering): MAGE students are assessed the MAGE tuition rates, on campus / remote sites and online as it applies, when enrolled in applied Master of Engineering (ENPM/ENAI), Engineering (ENGR) and Computer, Mathematical, and Natural Sciences (CMNS) courses only. MAGE students taking any course outside of ENPM, ENAI, ENGR or CMNS are assessed the tuition appropriate to the particular course’s tuition rate and/or student's residency status, that is, in-state or out-of-state. MAGE Students taking non-ENPM/ENAI courses with differential tuition: Some other courses throughout the University charge differential (higher) tuition to all students who enroll in specific courses.

Mandatory Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP)
Insurance coverage is required for Graduate Students enrolled in 48 or more units in a semester or 36 units in a 12-week term (including F-1 and J-1 visa students). Students must take one of the following actions each academic year:
- Students can submit proof of other insurance (waiver submission) and, once approved, have the charge removed from the student financial account.
- Or, students can enroll in the Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP) and let the university assessed fee remain as payable on the student account.
Inaction of a waiver submission by the published deadline will result in the premium being charged with no refundability. University vendor provided insurance will be broken into two prorated charges for each semester.
Graduate assistants appointed by July 31, non-degree-seeking students, students enrolled in certificate programs, exclusively online programs, and/or programs at the Shady Grove campus will not be automatically enrolled in SHIP and are eligible to purchase SHIP using the voluntary enrollment process.

All Tuition and Fees Refundability is in accordance with University Refund Policy. Each student is individually responsible for their student bill and for meeting payment deadlines. It is advisable to check student accounts regularly.
