Navigating Parking at the University of Maryland: A Comprehensive Guide

Parking at a large university like the University of Maryland (UMD) can be complex. This guide provides comprehensive information about parking regulations, options, and resources available to students, faculty, staff, and visitors. Understanding the rules and utilizing available tools can ensure a smooth and citation-free parking experience.

Parking Options for Faculty and Staff

The University of Maryland offers flexible parking permit options tailored to individual working, living, and learning situations for faculty and staff. Lot signs beginning with a letter are considered faculty/staff lots.

Parking Options for Students

Students can register online or in the office for parking for the spring 2026 semester starting January 1, 2026. Once you have completed the registration process, your parking pass will continue to work if you are renewing your parking pass from a prior semester. However, if this is your first parking pass with us you will need to come to the TAPS office to pick it up. To avoid long lines during the first few weeks of class we urge students to come closer to the beginning of January when there are minimal lines.

On the day that you come to pick up your parking pass, the location in which you should park is the Shady Grove Garage. You will need to push the button for a ticket at the gate to gain access to the garage. Before you leave the campus, stop by the TAPS office in Building II, room 1312, and pick up your parking pass. The parking pass may then be used to exit the Shady Grove Garage at no cost. Once you have your parking pass, you will be able to access the Shady Grove Garage and Lot 1, which are the primary student parking locations on campus. It is important to note that the ground floor of the Traville Gateway Garage is always restricted to employee permit holders.

Signs that begin with numbers are considered student lots. Students with commuter permits who need to occasionally park overnight should consult our overnight parking map. Commuter students who live off campus and require regular overnight parking should purchase an overnight storage parking permit. These are available on a first-come, first-served basis.
