Variety of Tour Options

UMD understands that everyone's needs and schedules are different, which is why they've created a variety of options for you to visit UMD. To accommodate diverse interests and schedules, UMD offers a range of tour options, including student-led walking tours, information sessions with admissions representatives, group tours, and virtual tours.

Student-Led Campus Walking Tours

Join a student-led campus walking tour to learn about important buildings, resources, and the student experience at UMD. These tours, geared toward high school and transfer students, typically last 60-90 minutes and are offered daily, Monday through Friday. This is a great way to get an insider's perspective on what it's like to be a Terp.

Information Sessions and Tours

Hear from an admission representative about UMD and our application process, followed by a student-led campus walking tour. For a more comprehensive visit, consider attending a session that combines an information session with an admissions representative, followed by a student-led campus walking tour. Geared toward high school and transfer students, this session is about 2 hours long and offered on Wednesdays.

Group Tours

If you are interested in bringing a group of 10 or more students to campus, explore the different types of group tours available. UMD also accommodates larger groups, offering specialized tours for groups of 10 or more students. These tours can be tailored to specific interests and needs, providing a more personalized experience. Conferences & Visitor Services provides tours for non-prospective undergraduate groups.

McKeldin Mall: McKeldin Mall, the bustling hub in the center of campus, is a place of tradition, determination and wonder. From First Look Fair to Quidditch matches, you can find your place at UMD on the mall.
The M Circle: The giant floral “M” on Campus Drive brightly welcomes visitors and is a popular backdrop for Terp graduation photos.
Testudo Statues: Rubbing the nose on this bronze statue for good luck is one of UMD’s best-known traditions. Rub the nose of one of our beloved Testudo statues for good luck.
Maryland Stadium: Nearly 52,000 fans can come together at the home of Maryland’s football and men’s lacrosse teams.
The Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center (The Clarice): The Clarice features UMD’s School of Music and School of Theatre, Dance, and Performance Studies, and its own artistic platform, Clarice Presents.
The Dairy: Stop by one of our top-notch athletic facilities. Have a scoop of homemade ice cream at the Dairy.

Special Events

In addition to regular tours, UMD hosts several special events throughout the year for prospective students:

Fall Open House: A day-long event geared toward high school juniors, seniors, and prospective transfer students. Fall Open House is an opportunity to get to know UMD, hear from current students, connect with academic departments, hear more about student activities and support services, learn more about applying to UMD and join a walking tour of campus.
Discover Maryland: This day long event is geared toward high school sophomores/juniors. Discover Maryland is an opportunity to see what UMD has to offer, hear from current students, speak with academic departments and support services, learn about admissions and tour campus.
Admitted Student Programs: This day-long program is geared toward newly admitted students and their families. This two hour event is geared toward newly admitted students. You'll hear from the Office of Undergraduate Admissions and the Department of Resident Life about your next steps to becoming #AlwaysATerp! Students will also receive a tour and get a glimpse into what it's like living on campus. This two hour reception is for newly admitted students and their families.

Planning Your Visit

Before your visit, here are a few things to keep in mind:

Registration: Registration is required. Be sure to register in advance for tours and information sessions, as space may be limited.
Weather: College Park weather can be unpredictable, so bring comfortable shoes in case it rains. Check the weather forecast and dress accordingly.
Transportation: UMD is easily accessible by car or public transportation. The state is building a 16-mile light-rail line that will provide transformative benefits to Terps. They'll be able to ride for free between the five stops on or near campus, use new bike lanes and take advantage of more convenient connections to Metro, MARC and Amtrak. Only four Metro stops away, Washington, D.C., is an extension of the classroom for Terps.
Visitor Center: Staff at the Visitor Center at The Hotel are eager to welcome you to UMD's beautiful campus. Our team of knowledgeable undergraduate students can provide you with any information you need to make your visit enjoyable and memorable. Can’t make it to the Visitor Center during normal business hours? Staff at the Turner Hall and Thomas V. Miller, Jr Administration Building Welcome Desks want to provide a warm Terrapin greeting to all guests and visitors.
