University of Louisville: A Comprehensive Overview of Rankings and Academic Excellence

The University of Louisville (UofL), a state-supported research university situated in Kentucky's largest metropolitan area, has a rich history and a commitment to academic excellence, diversity, and community engagement. Campuses and Academic Structure

The University of Louisville operates across three campuses:

Belknap Campus: The 287-acre Belknap Campus, located three miles from downtown Louisville, houses eight of the university's 12 colleges and schools.
Health Sciences Center: Situated in downtown Louisville's medical complex, the Health Sciences Center is home to the university's health-related programs and the University of Louisville Hospital.
Shelby Campus: The 243-acre Shelby Campus is located in eastern Jefferson County.

Rankings and Recognition

The University of Louisville has consistently demonstrated improvement in national rankings. In the 2026 edition of Best Colleges, University of Louisville is ranked No. #158 in National Universities by U.S. News & World Report. It's also ranked No. #84 in Top Public Schools.

UofL soared 13 spots to reach No. 84 among Top Public Schools, and it climbed to No. 158 on the Best National Universities list, a jump of 21 spots from the previous year. The increase is the largest among ACC institutions and places UofL in a tie with the University of Cincinnati among public schools.

UofL’s 2020 ranking was No. UofL’s jump was the third highest among its 17 benchmark institutions, behind University of Illinois-Chicago’s 20-spot increase and University of New Mexico’s 31-spot increase.

UofL also ranks #106 among all national public universities in the new “best colleges” rankings that came out Sept. 18.

The rankings reflect UofL’s commitment to provide accessibility to and affordability of a college degree and narrowing the opportunity gap between majority and minority students.

Factors Influencing Rankings

U.S. News and World Report’s ranking system is based on two pillars:

Categorization: Schools are categorized according to their mission, as determined by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching.
Indicators of Academic Excellence: Seventeen indicators of academic excellence are considered, such as graduation rates and student-to-faculty ratio. The “Expert Opinion” score accounts for 20% of the overall ranking and gives significant weight to those in a position to judge a school’s undergraduate academic excellence (e.g. presidents, provost and deans of admissions).

UofL’s scores improved in several categories, including a 3-percentage point increase in the six-year graduation rate for Pell Grant recipients and growth in the percentage of full-time faculty.

The progress in many of these metrics coincide with the work being done as part of UofL’s broader, three-year Strategic Plan, which officially kicked off in the fall of 2019. The 36th edition of Best Colleges evaluated more than 1,400 colleges and universities.

Academic Environment and Student Life

The University of Louisville provides a supportive and inclusive environment for its diverse student body.

Student Body

The university has a total undergraduate enrollment of 17,086 (fall 2024), its setting is urban, and the campus size is 345 acres. The student-faculty ratio at University of Louisville is 14:1, and it utilizes a semester-based academic calendar.

UofL is "a very diverse institution with students truly from every walk of life." The student body is "very inclusive" and "there is a large queer population." Students advocate for each other and are "quick to take action towards a better campus community." Undergraduates describe their peers as "academically driven," and "some of the smartest people I know." Many students also work while in school, balancing their classes with participating in programs such as the partnership between UPS and UofL, which pays tuition for students working the overnight shift at UPS.

Academic Programs and Opportunities

The University of Louisville is known for providing "great STEM research" opportunities, with popular programs including the School of Medicine and the Speed School of Engineering. The academic experience is "very good," and many students appreciate the classes that use a flipped classroom model, where more of class time is devoted to discussion or hands-on activities rather than lecture. Such learning experiences include field trips and opportunities to engage with the local community. One engineering student recounts working on a water filtration system that the class presented to the city's water utility, saying, "To be able to do something like that as [first years] was pretty cool." Professors at UofL are "passionate about the subject matter, knowledgeable, and care about their students" and overall, most students report positive experiences. As one student emphasizes, "Every professor I've had has been personable and understanding." The school's internship and research opportunities are also lauded, especially by engineering students who mention paid Co-op work with a variety of employers including NASA, GE, and Ford.

Campus Life and Activities

Students report spending a lot of their free time studying in the library or other academic buildings, but when students get a break from studying, they describe University of Louisville as a "beautiful campus" where, in warm weather, people flock to the "lawns to play sports games and/or have picnics." The school's activities also cater to a wide range of interests, with a special nod during the fall football season where "tailgates are the biggest events to go to." Intramural sports are also popular among many students, as well as working out in the recreation center. For those with a green thumb, UofL has a Garden Commons where volunteers help grow "free-to-pick, fresh, organic produce." One excited student explains, "I love gardening, so it's awesome we have this resource on campus." There are also "many creative events such as art galleries and poetry readings" happening on-campus, as well as clubs including the LGBT+ club, the commuter student club, the pre-pharmacy club, and the horseback riding club. As one student elaborates, "There are organizations ranging from helping people with their mental health to pickling different types of vegetables to research organizations for the STEM fields." Students note that Greek life is "pretty prominent but does not overrun the school"; it's possible to not participate and "still have a social life." For venturing off-campus, "People like to go to bars or find local restaurants to visit since there are so many," explains one student.

On its main campus, there is an art museum, planetarium and Auguste Rodin's original sculpture of The Thinker for students to visit and enjoy. The university has a strong media presence on campus with a student produced radio station called WLCV, which was founded back in 1968. Athletic teams at the university are called the Louisville Cardinals or the Cards and participate in the Atlantic Coast Conference.

Mental Health and Well-being Resources

All counselors in the UofL Counseling Center have completed Racial Trauma Therapy Training. Health Promotion employes student employees as Health Advocate Leaders to support mental health programming for students. Additionally, the Engage, Lead, Serve Board has a Physical and Mental Health committee that provides programming. University Housing and the Resident Experience staff regularly connect with residents to assess student wellbeing and provide wellness resources. Additionally, wellbeing programs are offered in the residence halls.

Kognito - Kognito is an online, interactive training. Users can learn to identify students and peers exhibiting signs of psychological distress and motivate them to seek appropriate help. Users also learn self-help strategies. Kognito training equips faculty, staff and students with the tools necessary to promote mental health and prevent suicide by practicing scenarios online. Kognito is incorporated into all GEN 101 classes.

Health Promotion offers Koru - Koru Mindfulness Basics and Koru 2.0 are evidence-based 4-session courses that offer mindfulness, meditation, and stress management skills for daily life. Open to students, staff and faculty. Staff and faculty can earn 300 Get Healthy Now points for attending one of these course. Additionally Health Promotion offers courses on Food, Nutrition & Cooking, Alcohol & Substances, Sexual Health & Relationships, Sleeping & Napping, and Fitness & Movement.

Programs for Students offered by the Center for Family and Community Well-Being:

STRESS RESILIENCY (4 HOURS): Addresses stress and mental health needs and teaches strategies to manage stress and promote well-being in college.
MIND MATTERS (4-6 HOURS): Overcoming adversity and building resiliency skills for those with adverse experiences from the past or present.
LOVE NOTES (6 HOURS): Teaches elements of healthy relationships, relationship risk factors, sex and decision-making, communication, and conflict resolution skills.
LOVE NOTES LGBTQIA+ EDITION (6 HOURS): Modified version of the evidence-based Love Notes (above) that focuses on LGBTQIA+ relationships, risks and protective factors.
MIND OVER MOOD (3-6 HOURS): Students with mild anxiety/depression learn key coping techniques to address symptoms.
CHOICES (2 HOURS): Equips students with the information, strategies, and skills to make decisions related to substance use.

Admissions and Financial Aid

University of Louisville accepts the Common Application and has a test-optional admissions policy. The school's in-state tuition and fees are $13,136; out-of-state tuition and fees are $29,482. Fifty-nine percent of first-year students receive need-based financial aid, and the average net price for federal loan recipients is $18,277. The four-year graduation rate is 44%. Six years after graduation, the median salary for graduates is $46,571.

Commitment to Accessibility and Affordability

UofL has shown consistent improvement in its six-year graduation rate, from 52% in 2014 to a 62% rate in 2022.UofL also has increased the six-year graduation rate among Pell grant recipients, up 6% from 2020, and has made significant improvement in its student/faculty ratio, which dropped from 14.0 to 1 in 2020 to 12.7 to 1 in 2022.In addition, UofL has increased the number of bachelor’s degrees awarded to underrepresented students by 15.2% since 2020-21 and posted a significant increase in the number of bachelor’s degrees awarded to low-income students.
