University of Kentucky Study Abroad Scholarships: A Comprehensive Guide
The University of Kentucky (UK) recognizes the increasing importance of cross-cultural competence and global awareness in today's interconnected world. To support students in gaining these valuable experiences, the UK's Office of Education Abroad and Exchanges offers a variety of scholarships to make studying abroad financially accessible. General Scholarships and Financial Aid
UK's Office of Education Abroad and Exchanges seeks to make studying abroad financially feasible for all students through offering general as well as area and term-specific scholarships.
UK Education Abroad Scholarships
To be considered for UK EA Scholarships, students must complete an application and identify their program of interest. There is no separate scholarship application required to be considered for these exchange program scholarships. Applicants are not guaranteed a scholarship.
UK Education Abroad & Exchanges Scholarships
UK Education Abroad & Exchanges offers two scholarships per year for students studying at the Heidelberg University in Germany.

University of Caen Scholarship
In partnership with the Lexington-Deauville Sister City commission, UK Education Abroad offers two semesters (one fall and one spring) tuition and housing paid scholarships to attend the University of Caen in France. The scholarship is available for students proficient in the French language, who have demonstrated academic achievement, and plan to continue French study.
First-Generation College Student Scholarship
This scholarship is available for full-time undergraduate first-generation college students currently enrolled at the University of Kentucky who maintain a cumulative 3.0 GPA or higher at the time of application, have completed 30 or more credit hours, and are participating in a fall term semester-length program.
Spanish Language and Culture Scholarship
This scholarship is available for full-time undergraduate students of any major or discipline currently enrolled at the University of Kentucky participating in credit bearing, semester-long Spanish language and culture Education Abroad program in South or Central America.
Education Abroad Travel Grant
This scholarship is available to support travel expenses for one or more undergraduate students with financial need who are traveling internationally for an education abroad program, internship, and/or another international high impact learning opportunity. These awards are from various colleges and departments at the University of Kentucky. UK EA does not manage these awards.
FAFSA and UK Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships

CAFE Ed Abroad Scholarship
The CAFE Ed Abroad Scholarship accepts applications from students enrolled in a CAFE undergraduate degree program.
College of Design Travel Awards
Zolondek Travel Award: Available to all College of Design students in their third year of undergraduate study or above.
Richard N. Monohan, Jr. David Anthony Spaeth Travel Scholarship: For interiors students receiving core credit for studying abroad during the summer and traveling with an approved College Faculty Directed Program.
Pigman Scholars Program
Each year a cohort of Pigman Scholars receive a scholarship to participate in a summer program.
College of Health Sciences Education Abroad Travel Grant
The College of Health Sciences provides a $500 Education Abroad Travel Grant to support students on selected education abroad programs.

Honors Grant Review Committee
The Honors Grant Review committee will consider the merit of the proposal submitted to the EA Scholarship when making award decisions. Students only need to submit the application to the EA office to be considered and all students that do so will be considered.
Partner Provider and University Scholarships
AIFS Abroad and Global Experiences have established several grants and scholarships available to applicants on their programs. AIFS/GE grants do not require an extra application - students will know before applying to their program if they are eligible. Grants include $500 for students who are Pell Grant eligible, a Gilman recipient, FEA recipient, Boren recipient, receiving benefits from the GI Bill, and who go abroad a second time with AIFS/GE. Barcelona SAE Scholarships are focused on removing the financial barriers that often keep students from studying abroad.
CCSA Storyteller Scholarship
The CCSA Storyteller Scholarship is designed to encourage student participation in CCSA programs by offering a means for students to tell their own CCSA stories. The maximum award is $1,000. Awardees are expected to provide CCSA quality writing and/or imagery.
DIS Scholarships and Program Fee Reductions
These scholarships are available to students of any major or discipline currently enrolled at the University of Kentucky participating in a DIS program. DIS offers need-based scholarships allocated from various funds including the Mary Dau Foundation to study abroad with DIS. DIS Automatic Program Fee Reductions UK students will receive $3,000 off academic year and semester programs, $300 off 3-credit summer programs, $400 off 4-credit summer programs, and $700 off a summer architecture and design programs.
Global Semesters Discount
These scholarships are available to students of any major or discipline currently enrolled at the University of Kentucky participating in a Global Semesters program. All UK students participating on a Global Semesters Fall or Spring program will receive a $500 discount off the program price.
KIIS Scholarships
These scholarships are available to students of any major or discipline currently enrolled at the University of Kentucky participating in an KIIS program. KIIS provides the funds for two $750 scholarships for students participating on KIIS Winter programs. These scholarship recipients are chosen by UK Education Abroad. Eligible students should apply by completing the application for the UK Education Abroad Scholarship.
Semester at Sea Scholarships
These scholarships are available to students of any major or discipline currently enrolled at the University of Kentucky participating in a SAS program. Semester at Sea awards $4 million in financial aid annually. To be eligible, students do not necessarily need to qualify for standard forms of financial aid (such as Pell Grants) on their home campuses.
ISA Scholarships
These scholarships are available for students of any major or discipline currently enrolled at the University of Kentucky participating in an ISA program. Please see each scholarship description for eligibility requirements, application materials and required documents.
External Scholarship Opportunities
Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program
The Department of State’s Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program enables students of limited financial means to study or intern abroad, providing them with skills critical to our national security and economic prosperity.
British Universities Transnational Exchange Scholarship
The British Universities Transnational Exchange Scholarship promotes mobility between universities and colleges in the UK and institutions overseas. Each scholarship is worth £500 (approx. US $700) and winners will be notified by the end of October. NOTE: This scholarship requires students to complete a program that is not currently approved in UK EA's program list. If you are interested in applying for this scholarship/program, please contact your UK EA Advisor before applying.
Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) Program
The Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) Program is a fully funded summer overseas language and cultural immersion program for American undergraduate and graduate students. NOTE: This scholarship requires students complete a program that is not currently approved in UK EA's program list. German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) Scholarship
Highly qualified undergraduate students are invited to apply for scholarships funding study, senior thesis research and/or internships in Germany. The goal of this program is to support study abroad in Germany and at German universities. Preference will be given to students whose projects or programs are based at and organized by a German university.
Metro Louisville Scholarship
Who Can Apply: Any full-time, degree-seeking student currently enrolled in a degree program at any accredited institution of higher learning in Metro Louisville or its surrounding counties. Furthermore, any student who attends a university outside of this area but whose permanent residence rests within the allowed counties can apply for the scholarship. Freeman-ASIA Scholarship
undergraduate students with demonstrated financial need to study abroad in East or Southeast Asia. A Freeman-ASIA award provides need-based funding to assist the recipient with the cost of the study abroad program and related expenses, including airfare, basic living costs, local transportation, books, etc.
Gilman-McCain Scholarship
The Gilman-McCain Scholarship provides awards of $5,000 for child dependents of active duty service members to study or intern abroad on credit-bearing programs.
Japan Student Services Organization (JASSO) Scholarship
The Japan Student Services Organization (JASSO) is an independent administrative institution established under the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology (Monbukagakusho). JASSO comprehensively administers scholarship loan programs, support programs for international students, and student support programs.
Phi Kappa Phi Study Abroad Grants
Phi Kappa Phi Study Abroad Grants are designed to help support undergraduates as they seek knowledge and experience in their academic fields by studying abroad.
Race for Education Scholarships
The Race for Education has scholarships available to students of any discipline who are interested in pursuing a career in the equine or agricultural industry. The Race for Education has many scholarship opportunities, including the Thoroughbred Scholarship and the Isaac Murphy Scholarship.

John R. Bell International Studies Scholarship
The John R. Bell International Studies Scholarship supports International Studies Majors studying abroad. John R. Bell (’85) graduated from the University of Kentucky with a BA in History. In addition to studying history, Bell took German, and Studied abroad in Germany. These experiences started John on the path toward a successful career in Foreign Intelligence. From his work with the government, he has transitioned into private-sector work in International risk management for a Fortune 200 company. Each year, UK's Office of Education Abroad and Exchanges evaluates current program offerings and recommends programs that align best with the IS major. The following programs are recommended specifically for international studies majors.
Europe
Paris, France
Paris (population 2.25 million) is draped in history, tradition, culture, and glamour, not to mention academia. A center of learning with a plethora of French schools, Paris is an ideal destination for foreign exchange and study abroad students. The Seine River, which bisects the city into its north (Right Bank or "Rive Droite") and south (Left Bank or "Rive Gauche") areas, has long been a source of the city's economic, political, and artistic notoriety. The two banks of the Seine each have distinct personalities- the spacious boulevards and formal buildings of the Right Bank and the cultural and intellectual reputation of the Left Bank- which contribute to the diversity of this magnificent city.
Florence, Italy
Florence University of the Arts (FUA) presents a contemporary and thorough approach to a Liberal Arts education, along with an extensive curriculum in Studio Arts. With small classes taught by a highly qualified international faculty, every course aims to enhance the social, intercultural and professional experience of each student. Students have the opportunity to choose classes from any of the 8 schools/departments contained within Florence University of the Arts.
Heidelberg, Germany
Located in south west Germany on the banks of the River Neckar, the city of Heidelberg is home to one of the oldest universities in Europe. Established in 1386, Universitat Heidelberg has consistently been ranked in the top three universities in Germany and the top 50 worldwide. It is a truly international institution with almost 20 per cent of the 31,000 student population coming from 130 different countries. The language of instruction is German and applicants are required to demonstrate a minimum of four semesters of university level German by the time of participation. UK Education Abroad & Exchanges offers two scholarships per year for students studying at the Heidelberg University in Germany.
Maynooth, Ireland
Maynooth University is located in the beautiful, historic town of Maynooth, just 30 minutes away from Ireland's capital city of Dublin. The campus combines historic 18th century buildings with state of the art research and teaching facilities and is close to Ireland's 'Silicon Valley'. Maynooth maintains strong links with Intel, HP, Google and more than 50 other giants of industry.
South America
Oaxaca, Mexico
This research-based program offers students the opportunity to conduct research in social or environmental science while further offering each student the ability to design and conduct their own research project under the supervision of knowledgeable and experienced local researchers. Students will enroll in GEO 365: Special Topics in Regional Geography: Society and Environment in Oaxaca, Mexico (3 credit hours); GEO 431: Political Ecology (3 credit hours); and GEO 406: Field Studies in Geography: Undergraduate Field Research Experience, Oaxaca, Mexico (3 credit hours). Note: GEO 406 is a lab course which fulfills the A&S College Laboratory or Field Experience Requirement.
Valparaíso and Viña del Mar, Chile
Valparaíso (pop. 284,000), and Viña del Mar (pop. 285,000) are sister cities located halfway down Chile's endless coastline and sixty-eight miles northwest of Santiago. A city of seafaring traditions and grand hilltop views, Valparaíso was once home to the famous Chilean poet Pablo Neruda.
Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
This Program offers students business and cultural studies courses taught in English as well as courses with locals, in a variety of subjects, taught in Portuguese. Course topics (for courses in English) include studies on ethnicity and society, consumer behavior, global economy, intercultural development and contemporary cultural studies.
Lima, Peru
Lima, the capital of Peru, is situated on the west coast of the southern Pacific Ocean, along the outlet of the Rímac River. Lima's importance as the capital city of Peru and its idyllic location along the southern Pacific coast, provide an exceptional study abroad site for students to improve their Spanish language and learn about Peruvian culture.
Africa
Cape Town, South Africa
This internship program offers hands-on experience working with one of several non-profit and non-governmental organizations in Cape Town, South Africa. In addition students will learn about contemporary South Africa in a conventional seminar taught by UK faculty.
Asia
Bangkok, Thailand
As Thailand's main port, Bangkok has always been more cosmopolitan than other regions of the country. The city also has significant minorities of Chinese, Indians, Arabs, Malays, Europeans and Americans. In addition to Thai, the national language, English is widely employed in Bangkok. It is taught in secondary schools and in colleges and universities, and used extensively in the important tourism industry.
Russia and Central Asia
Russian State Pedagogical University (Herzen Institute) in St. Petersburg, Russia and Almaty, Kazakhstan (RLASP):RLASP serves both graduate and undergraduate students. The program provide approximately 20 hours per week of in-class instruction in Russian grammar, phonetics, conversation and cultural studies in Russia or Kazakhstan. Program features include homestays, weekly excursions, travel to other regions of Russia/Kazakhstan, conversation partners, and a wide range of opportunities to pursue internships, volunteering, hobbies and personal interests in a Russian-language context. Credit for area studies coursework is offered in such subjects as literature and history, political science and contemporary society.
Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan: Here you will find a highly personalized and customizable program of intensive language study. Although it is one of SRAS' most popular locations, class sizes in Bishkek are the smallest. You will be able to focus on your language skills through personalized attention and optional, specialized language electives. Peer tutoring and an integrated cultural program focusing on Central Asian cultures will take your learning outside the classroom as can optional travel opportunities and active, recommended home stays.
Irkutsk, Russia: Irkutsk provides an exceptionally intensive and immersive experience to study both Russian language and the environment. Here, English is less prevalent than in major cities and the slower pace of life means that strong, local, Russian-speaking connections can be made through SRAS-supported peer tutoring and through local interest groups.
Kyiv, Ukraine: In Kyiv, an intensive and supportive environment of Russian language study is paired with home stay to provide you with an immersive language and cultural experience. Out-of-classroom experiences and special lectures and workshops introduce you to Ukrainian identity, history and the issues in contemporary Ukraine. Kyiv is a very affordable option for study abroad, due to the many inclusions in this program (2 meals/day, subway transport card) and the generally low cost of living.
