Navigating the University of Illinois Transcript Request Process
The University of Illinois system offers several avenues for students and alumni to obtain their academic transcripts. This article provides a comprehensive guide to understanding the different types of transcripts available, the methods for requesting them, associated fees, and important policies.
Official vs. Unofficial Transcripts
It's crucial to distinguish between official and unofficial transcripts, as their purpose and delivery methods differ significantly.
- Official Transcripts: These are sealed and tamper-proof versions of your academic record. They are usually delivered directly to the company or institution requesting them. An official transcript can only be released directly to a school, scholarship, or application-based program.
- Unofficial Transcripts: These are readily accessible to students for their personal use. Only an unofficial copy of your transcript can be released directly to a student.
Accessing Unofficial Transcripts
Unofficial transcripts are available to all students, both current and former, and will be provided upon request at no cost.
- Current Students: Current, graduated, and recent students can access their unofficial transcripts by logging into Student Self-Service, then select Student Services on the myUIconnect page. Once on the Student Services Dashboard, find View Academic History/Unofficial Transcript under Records. Students can use the Print feature to print their unofficial transcript to paper or pdf. If you have earned a degree and let your password expire you can reactive your password.
- Former Students: Unofficial transcripts for former students unable to access Self-Service are only available for pick-up, in person, from the Records Service Center.
It's important to note that unofficial transcripts provided by the Office of the University Registrar will be printed on white paper, and the word "Unofficial" will be displayed on each page. The university does not provide Unofficial Transcripts electronically or to anyone other than the student unless a FERPA waiver is on file with current, valid dates.
Requesting Official Transcripts
Current or recent students who have an active Student Self-Service login and password can submit an online order for an official PDF or paper transcript using the Student Services link on the myUIconnect page in Student Self-Service. Click here to request an official transcript from the U of I. A small fee will be assessed per transcript requested.

Transcripts can only be released directly to the student or to a person or entity designated by the student (a photo ID is required when picking up a transcript in person).
Methods for Ordering Official Transcripts
Several methods are available for ordering official transcripts from UIS:
- Online: UIS has appointed Parchment as the designated agent for processing and sending official electronic transcripts on our behalf.
- Fax: Download and sign a copy of the transcript request form (pdf) and fax it to the designated office. You must use an American Express, Visa, Discover, or MasterCard credit card to pay the fee when faxing in a request. You may use the credit card portion of the transcript request form to pay by American Express, Visa, Discover, or MasterCard credit card. Please be sure to include the credit card number, expiration date, security code and billing address on your request.
- In-person: Stop by the Office of Records and Registration, complete and sign a transcript request form (pdf), and pay the fee using exact cash, check or money order, American Express, Visa, Discover, or MasterCard credit card.
Delivery Options and Timeframes
- Electronic Transcripts: Delivered within 1 calendar day of the order being processed.
- Pick Up: Ready for pick up from the Records Service Center within 2 business days after ordering.
- Mail: Allow 7 to 10 days for delivery to domestic addresses and 4 to 6 weeks to international addresses. Orders placed for 10 or more paper transcripts to a single address must be delivered using express delivery to provide for tracking.
Fees
- Electronic Transcripts: \$8.00 per Transcript
- Pick Up: \$8.00 per Transcript
- Paper Transcripts: Refer to the relevant university office for specific fees.
Notarized Transcript for Apostille
A notarized transcript is an official transcript that has been authenticated and notarized. This service is only available if the recipient address can receive FedEx delivery (Note: FedEx cannot deliver to a P.O. Box).
Important Policies and Considerations
- Transcript Content: Your transcript will only include final grades from classes taken at the specific University of Illinois campus from which you are requesting the transcript. Your Uni transcript will not list your current classes or any U of I or Parkland classes. Transcripts will include final grades as shown in Student Self-Service only, not necessarily final grades as shown in course learning management systems such as Canvas, Moodle, etc.
- Third-Party Requests: If you are over the age of 18, no one will be able to request a copy of your records on your behalf without your signed consent.
- Credentials from Other Institutions: All credentials presented (for admission, transfer articulation, etc.) become the permanent property of the University. They cannot be subsequently released to a student or to another individual or institution. Transcripts and documents from other institutions are the property of UIS; once received these documents are retained by the Office of Records and Registration. Federal policy states that a student has the right to view these documents in his or her file. UIS and most colleges and universities have a policy that does not provide for the making of copies of transcripts from other institutions.
- Tax Information: Starting January 6, 2025, sales tax will be collected on certain document requests, including transcripts, in compliance with federal, state, and local tax laws.
- Sealed Envelopes: Orders addressed to the student will have an outside envelope marked “sealed envelopes enclosed” and contain individually sealed transcripts inside.
- College Reports: The Office of the Registrar no longer completes the College Report for the Common Applications or any other transfer report. The official transcript contains the information being requested.
- Login Trouble: If you aren't able to log into your account and cannot recover your password, please see the "Login Trouble" section on the university website.
