University of Central Florida Knights: A Tradition of Athletic Excellence
The University of Central Florida (UCF) Knights, representing the university in unincorporated Orange County, Florida, near Orlando, have established a notable presence in collegiate athletics. As a member of the Big 12 Conference, the Knights compete in the National Collegiate Athletic Association's (NCAA) Division I, specifically the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) for football. While the university prefers to be identified as UCF rather than Central Florida, the athletic program has grown significantly since its inception.
From Citronauts to Knights: The Evolution of a Mascot
In 1970, students, staff, and faculty sought to replace UCF's original, unpopular mascot, the Citronaut, a blend of an orange and an astronaut. The "Knights of Pegasus" was selected as the new moniker. From 1993 to 2007, the teams were rebranded as the Golden Knights. In 2007, the athletic program reverted to simply "Knights."
A Comprehensive Athletic Program
UCF sponsors 16 varsity sports, encompassing six men's teams (baseball, basketball, football, golf, soccer, and tennis) and ten women's teams (basketball, cross country, golf, rowing, soccer, softball, tennis, indoor track & field, outdoor track & field, and volleyball). As of the end of the 2020-21 school year, the Knights' varsity teams have collectively won 89 conference championships and two national championships. Aurieyall Scott stands out as one Golden Knights athlete who has achieved an individual NCAA championship.
Conference Affiliations and Transitions
UCF's varsity athletic program was a founding member of the Sunshine State Conference in 1975. The school transitioned to Division I in 1984. During its initial years in D-I, UCF was part of the American South Conference, which later merged into the Sun Belt Conference in 1991. Women's sports in Division I participated in the New South Women's Athletic Conference until 1990, when the American South began organizing women's sports.
In 1996, UCF advanced to I-A (FBS) in football, initially maintaining independence before joining the Mid-American Conference as a football-only member in 2001. That same year, the Trans America Athletic Conference (TAAC) became the Atlantic Sun Conference (ASUN Conference). UCF joined Conference USA (C-USA) in all sports in 2005. In 2011, UCF's acceptance into the Big East was announced, which later became the American Athletic Conference (AAC) in 2013. In September 2021, UCF accepted an invitation to join the Big 12 Conference.

Facilities and the "Athletic Village"
In 2007, UCF undertook significant changes to its athletic program, developing Knights Plaza, an "athletic village" on the north end of campus. This included new sports facilities such as the UCF Arena (now Addition Financial Arena), a 45,000-seat football stadium originally known as Bright House Networks Stadium (now FBC Mortgage Stadium), a new softball complex, and an indoor football practice facility. UCF became the first school to open a new football stadium and basketball arena simultaneously for the 2007-08 season. Knights Plaza also incorporates student housing, retail and restaurant areas, and a pedestrian mall.
