University of the Arts London: A World-Leading Creative Hub

Founded in 1986, the University of the Arts London (UAL) has rapidly become a prominent institution in the global creative landscape. UAL offers an extensive range of courses in art, design, fashion, communication, screen and performing arts. Its graduates go on to work in and shape the creative industries worldwide.

A Rich History of Creative Education

While UAL itself was formally established in 1986, its constituent colleges boast a much longer history, with origins stretching back to the 19th century. This rich legacy contributes to UAL's reputation for providing some of the UK’s best creative instruction, spanning 150+ years. In 2004, six colleges united under the UAL umbrella: Central Saint Martins, London College of Communication, London College of Fashion, Chelsea College of Arts, Camberwell College of Arts, and Wimbledon College of Arts.

Academic Excellence and Diverse Course Offerings

UAL stands out for its dedication to providing an extensive range of courses encompassing various creative disciplines. Students benefit from access to state-of-the-art facilities, including workshops with letterpress machinery, studio theatres, and gallery space. These resources provide hands-on experience and allow students to explore their artistic potential in a professional setting.

The university is consistently ranked as one of the top two universities for art and design worldwide. UAL now has 19,000+ students both homegrown and international and it is world ranked at #2 for Art and Design.

Summer Study at UAL

For those seeking a shorter, intensive experience, UAL offers summer courses across various colleges. These courses cater to a diverse range of interests, from digital photography to fashion, animation, and graphic design. Students can choose one course at one college to study, allowing for a focused and immersive learning experience.

The summer programs emphasize independent learning, providing more advanced instruction and work than one might find in a similar class in the United States. While there may be less personal access to professors, students have full access to the university’s robust academic support system and resources, including an assigned advisor for academic support.

Research and Innovation

UAL's commitment to fostering creativity extends to its robust research environment. The University’s research environment supports the research capacity and capability of staff at all stages of their career, with a structure that aims to develop the world-leading researchers of the future. UAL's research culture reflects the leadership in the arts, design and communication sector, particularly in practice-based research. The University ensures the highest standard of research by supporting staff with clear research policies, data management and expert advice. Research mentoring, training and access to sabbatical leave ensure that UAL research staff are able to develop their careers and deliver high quality research.
