University of Alabama Sorority Recruitment: A Comprehensive Guide
Sorority recruitment at the University of Alabama is a highly anticipated and competitive process. With a large Greek population and a strong emphasis on the sorority experience, it's essential for Potential New Members (PNMs) to be well-prepared. This guide provides a detailed overview of the recruitment process, including key dates, rounds, and advice on how to make a positive impression.
Understanding the Alabama Panhellenic Association (APA)
The Alabama Panhellenic Association (APA) is one of the four governing councils within The University of Alabama’s Fraternity and Sorority Life community. The APA does not require a specific GPA to participate in recruitment; however, each sorority chapter has a minimum grade requirement for pledging and initiation. It is highly recommended that all prospective members have at or above a 3.3 cumulative high school or college GPA at the time of recruitment. Throughout the recruitment process, individuals are encouraged to explore all chapters and keep an open mind when considering where they may find the best fit.

Preference Day
Date: August 15, 2026
Preference Day is the most formal round of recruitment. PNMs can attend up to two Preference parties, each lasting 45 minutes. This day is crucial for focusing on what you seek to gain from joining a sorority. An invitation to a Preference event signifies a sorority's strong interest in you. The event typically includes a ceremony followed by a private conversation with a member who will share her personal experiences and the meaning of sisterhood. After the last party, PNMs will complete their Membership Recruitment Acceptance Binding Agreement (MRABA) in silence.
What to Wear: A nice, formal dress and heels or nice wedges are appropriate. Avoid dresses that are too short or tight.
Bid Day
Date: August 16, 2026
On Bid Day, PNMs will gather with their Sigma Rho Chi groups in Bryant Denny Stadium. A member of Panhellenic Exec will lead a countdown, and PNMs will open their bids to discover which sorority they have been invited to join. Following the excitement of bid reveals, each of the University of Alabama sororities have Bid Day retreats that happen on the day itself or the day after. What you guys do will depend on the chapter you’ll end up in.
Standing Out: Before and During Recruitment
Pre-Recruitment Preparation
- GPA: Although the APA does not require a specific GPA to participate in recruitment, each sorority chapter does have a minimum grade requirement for pledging and initiation. It is highly recommended that all prospective members have at or above a 3.3 cumulative high school or college GPA at the time of recruitment.
- Recommendation Letters: Chapter-specific letters of recommendation are not required, but if you choose to obtain any, we recommend that you review the chapters who accept recommendation letters and the content they are looking for.
- Social Media: Be mindful of your social media presence, both past and present.
- Networking: The sororities start making lists of PNMs they’re excited about in JANUARY of the girls’ senior year. If the chapters don’t know about you ahead of time, they can’t get excited about you during recruitment and it’s easier to slip through the cracks.
- Pre-Screening: Each sorority has a recruitment team. One of its main jobs is pre-screening every potential new member before Round 1. Pre-screening includes looking at GPA, recommendation letters, social resumes, Instagram, etc. They pre-screen you BEFORE sorority recruitment starts!
During Recruitment
- Be Yourself: Authenticity is key. Let your personality shine through in conversations and interactions.
- Keep an Open Mind: Be open to exploring all chapters, even those you may not have initially considered.
- Engage in Meaningful Conversations: Ask thoughtful questions and actively listen to the responses.
- Be Respectful: Treat all members and fellow PNMs with courtesy and respect.
- Follow the Schedule: Attend all scheduled parties, even if they aren't your top choices.
- Prioritize Chapters: If you visit two chapters on preference round, you can list, in preferential rank order, which chapters during that round you are willing to accept a bid from. If you are willing to accept a bid from either chapter, list both and you are guaranteed a bid to one of those two chapters.
Understanding Release Figure Methodology (RFM)
During sorority recruitment, each sorority has to use Release Figure Methodology [RFM]. It is a mathematical model to determine the number of invitations a sorority can extend in a round. Here is how RFM works: If most girls vote to keep a sorority, they have high return rates. When a sorority has high return rates, Panhellenic requires them to drop more girls. The most competitive and popular sororities drop around 70% after Round 1. RFM is similar to a popularity contest. If a sorority is very liked on campus, it will drop at a high rate after Round 1. Everyone is not placed on an equal playing field for Round 1. The sororities are pre-screening potential new members - looking at GPA, Instagram, etc.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Focusing Only on Material Aspects: Many potential new members spend weeks focusing ONLY on the material aspects of sorority recruitment - what to wear, makeup, hair, the color of their social resume, etc.
- Relying on Legacy Status or GPA Alone: They also think their legacy status or 4.0 GPA will get them a bid. It seems like the material things, your GPA, and legacy status help you stand out and get a great score. However, the color of your social resume, a recruitment packet, a Cartier LOVE bracelet, Golden Goose sneakers, your GPA, and legacy status will not get a bid.
- Not Communicating Your Fit: To get a bid to a sorority you love, you have to communicate you are the right fit. You have to communicate BEFORE and DURING sorority recruitment.
- Underestimating the Importance of Pre-Recruitment: Many potential new members show up at Round 1 and think that is their first impression. Here is what is actually happening: Each sorority has a recruitment team. One of its main jobs is pre-screening every potential new member before Round 1. Pre-screening includes looking at GPA, recommendation letters, social resumes, Instagram, etc. They pre-screen you BEFORE sorority recruitment starts!
Tips for Success
- Create a Prepping Strategy: Determine your odds for your Round 2 schedule if you went through sorority recruitment today (how many sororities would you be invited back to?) (Do you have the minimum GPA for each sorority? Do you have a recommendation letter for each sorority? Do you have members rooting for you in half of the sororities? Does your Instagram account align with their Instagram accounts? Do you have a great pre-score to boost your Round 1 score?) This step empowers you to take control of your sorority recruitment experience. Now, you know how to increase your odds and get more sororities back on your schedule!
- Determine Your Goals: Determine your goals for sorority recruitment. This step helps you create your checklist and know what to focus on throughout the months leading up to sorority recruitment. Figure out which qualities are important to you in your sorority. That way, you know how to vote during sorority recruitment and have talking points for your answers. The members will be impressed by how confident you are in your answers.
- Network Strategically: The goal is to meet members in all of the sororities we are targeting. Many of these target sororities are dropping over 50% of potential new members after the first round. Some are dropping closer to 70%. To increase you odds of being invited back, we have to have members rooting for you. The Ultimate Guide to Sorority Recruitment we give you scripts to reach out to the members you know and how to create an irresistible Instagram account to show you are just like them!
- Craft an Irresistible Instagram: Most sororities are looking at potential new members’ Instagrams to learn about them. If your Instagram is private or you have zero photos, they learn NOTHING about you. It does not help you get your name out there. Now, if your Instagram is PUBLIC, they can learn about who you are, what you like to do, etc. It is like an interactive social resume. Your Instagram could lead to you getting paired to talk to a member who is very similar to you. She may fall in love with you and give you the great score you deserve. This score helps you get invited back to the next round. That is what you want, right? You want to have options and get invited back to sororities you love.
- Create an MVP Social Resume: STEP #1. Before sorority recruitment starts, you will give each sorority a lot of information through your registration application, recommendation letters, etc. They use this information to give you a pre-score. This score is added onto your Round 1 score. How are pre-scores calculated? The Recruitment Team will decide on their standards to receive the best score. They will set standards for the: Number of clubs, sports, jobs, or internships you need to hold, Number of awards to you need to receive, GPA you need to have, Number of community service projects you need to have, Number of years an activity needs to be help, Number of leadership positions you need to hold.
