Navigating Meal Plan Options at the University of Alabama and UAB

Choosing the right meal plan is an important decision for university students. It impacts not only their dining experience but also their budget and overall campus life. This article provides a comprehensive overview of meal plan options at both the University of Alabama (UA) and the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), outlining the various choices available, their features, and key considerations for students.

Dining at the University of Alabama (UA)

The University of Alabama recognizes the importance of on-campus dining for students' educational, social, and dietary well-being. To that end, it offers a variety of meal plans designed to provide flexibility and convenience. Here's a breakdown of the options.

UA Meal Plan Options

UA offers several meal plan options to cater to different student needs and lifestyles. These include:

  • The All Access Meal Plan: This plan provides unlimited access to residential dining halls and includes 10 guest meals per semester.
  • The Essential Meal Plan: This plan offers a block of 55 residential meals and 25 retail meals per semester, along with 10 guest meals.
  • Silver 150 meal plan: includes 10 guest meals.

All Access and Silver plans come with guest meals that can be used for a guest or by the meal plan owner.

Important Note: The prices listed for these plans do not include the required $350 Dining Dollars, which are billed separately to the student's financial account.

Enhancing the Dining Experience

UA also offers the VIP Meal Plan, a premium add-on that expands access to select campus favorites.

Mobile Ordering

To further enhance convenience, UA encourages students to download the mobile ordering app. By selecting "Bama Dining Mobile Ordering" and logging in with their myBama credentials, students can link their Action Card and pay with Dining Dollars, Bama Cash, VIP membership, or their meal plan.

The Importance of Meal Planning

UA emphasizes that a meal plan means more time on campus and less time spent meal prepping. Campus dining aims to make it easy for students to eat well, live well, and savor the moments.

Understanding UAB Meal Plan Options

UAB offers a variety of meal plan options, each designed to cater to different student needs and lifestyles. It is crucial to understand the terms and conditions associated with these plans to make an informed decision.

General Information for UAB Meal Plans

  • Annual Contracts: All UAB meal plans are annual contracts, covering both the Fall and Spring semesters.
  • Billing: The cost of the selected meal plan is charged to the student's account once per semester (Fall and Spring).
  • ONE Card Requirement: The UAB ONE Card, which houses on-campus currencies, is essential for all meal plan transactions. No exceptions are made.
  • Non-Transferable: Meal plans are non-transferable and can only be used by the student whose name appears on the ONE Card. Guest Passes are an exception.
  • Dining Dollars, Dragon Cash, and BlazerBucks: These can be used for guests if the meal plan holder is present.
  • Lost or Stolen ONE Card: Immediately freeze the account on BlazerNet to prevent unauthorized purchases.
  • Sign-Up: Visit uab.edu/mealplans to sign up for a meal plan. Allow up to two business days for activation.
  • Payment Authorization: By signing up online, students authorize the meal plan to be billed to their UAB student account and become liable for payment.

UAB Meal Plan Requirements and Options

  • Freshmen Living On-Campus: Freshmen residing on campus are required to choose either the Green & Gold, Dragonfire 5, or Dragonfire 7 plan. If no plan is selected, they will default to the Dragonfire 7 plan.
  • Non-Freshmen Living On-Campus: Non-freshmen living on campus can choose from Dragonfire 7, Dragonfire 5, Green & Gold, Gold Block 75, Gold Block 25, or Dining Dollars.
  • Meal Plan Changes: Changes to meal plans must be made before the Drop/Add deadline for the current semester. Meal plans can be added at any time during the semester.

UAB Meal Plan Specifics

  • Cancellations: Cancellations are generally not allowed, except in cases of withdrawal from the university.
  • Withdrawal Refunds: If a withdrawal is approved and the student is not responsible for tuition charges, a prorated refund will be issued based on the number of days in attendance or the number of meals consumed, whichever is greater. Students have one year from the last day of the withdrawal term to receive a refund. Unused funds are forfeited after one year.
  • No-Show Policy: Failure to use a meal plan does not release a student from payment obligations.
  • Meal Plan Components: Meal plans consist of meals and dining dollars.
  • Meals: Meals can be used at the Commons on the Green for all-you-care-to-eat dining or for Simply to Go Take 3 meals.
  • Dining Dollars: Dining Dollars can be used dollar-for-dollar at all UAB Campus Dining locations.
  • Meal Rollover: Meals do not roll over from week to week.
  • Dining Dollar Rollover: Dining Dollars do not roll over from semester to semester.
  • Green & Gold and Gold Block Meal Usage: Holders of these plans can use up to five meals per day. The Green & Gold plan resets to nine meals on Sundays at midnight.

Full-time non-residential students taking six hours or less on campus during a given semester may be exempt from the Campus Dining Fee during that semester. Courses offered online (excluding “blended” courses) or at a location more than 100 miles away from UAB’s campus are considered off-campus when determining eligibility for a waiver. Campus Dining Fee funds can be accessed through the student’s Dragon Cash account. Funds in the student’s Dragon Cash account will roll over during the terms included in one academic year (i.e. Fall to Spring to Summer). The Dragon Cash account is used for accessing Campus Dining Fee funds only.

BlazerBucks at UAB

BlazerBucks is a declining balance account that can be used for goods and services anywhere the UAB ONE Card is accepted. BlazerBucks accounts are available to students, faculty, staff, and other individuals in possession of a UAB ONE Card. There is no minimum deposit required to activate a BlazerBucks account, and additional funds can be added in varying amounts at will.
