Navigating Textbooks at UW-Eau Claire: A Guide to the University Bookstore and Textbook Rentals
The University Bookstore at UW-Eau Claire serves as a central hub for students to acquire textbooks and course materials. Understanding the bookstore's policies and procedures, especially regarding textbook rentals, is crucial for a smooth academic experience. This article provides a comprehensive guide to navigating the University Bookstore, with a focus on textbook rentals and online ordering.
Textbook Rentals: A Cost-Effective Option
For many courses, the main texts are available for rent, offering a significant cost-saving alternative to purchasing new textbooks. The Integrated Resource Rental (IRR) Department manages the textbook rental program. To participate, students must have their Blugold ID to check out any textbooks from the IRR Department.
Key Policies for Textbook Rentals
Several essential policies govern textbook rentals at UW-Eau Claire:
- Eligibility: You may only check out textbooks for courses you are currently enrolled in.
- Returning Textbooks: If you drop a class, it’s important to return your rental textbook from that class immediately so another student can use it. Rental materials are due on the last day of final exams, but you can bring books back at any time to avoid lines.
- Late Fees: If your rental textbooks aren’t returned by the last day of finals, you will be fined. Failure to return your books and disregarding warning notices about returning them will increase the fine and could adversely affect your credit rating.
- Purchase Option: If you wish to buy the textbook you’ve rented for your professional library, a purchase period is set each semester. During this time, you can buy your current textbooks - or any textbook in the IRR inventory - for 25% off the publisher's current list price.
Obtaining Textbooks for Online Courses
UW-Eau Claire students enrolled in online courses have two options for acquiring their textbooks:
- In-Person Purchase: They can obtain textbooks for online courses in person from the University Bookstore.
- Online Ordering: Students can order online at www.bkstr.com/uwecbookstore.
Grace Period for Online Students
Online students receive a 7-day grace period from the last day of the term to allow shipping time. During this time your late fees do accrue on your account but will not show up unless your books do not arrive by this date. If your books arrive after the grace period, all late fees will become due on your account back to the original due date for the term. Your notices will show this grace period as a "due date" only due to the limitations of the notice verbiage.

- Tracking: Regardless of the method you choose to ship, be sure to select a method that provides tracking on your package.
- Late Fees: Late Fees will continue to accrue until your books are delivered to the University Bookstore.
- Recommended Carrier: The university recommends shipping with UPS.
